@@SanDiegoSeedCompany From your catalog I’ve got butternut squash, nasturtium, sunflowers, calendula, ca blue bells, milkweed, green onions, carrots, and lots of herbs! From Walter Anderson I’ve picked up a ton of hibiscus, sage, a dragon fruit, dwarf lemon tree, determinate tomatoes (I’m retrying starting some from seed that I got from you!), peppers, potatoes and lots of strawberries! I’ve got a large patio if you can’t tell haha and I’ve learned so much from your content!

Last year I realized that determinate tomato plants give me the most tomatoes for the relatively small space I have to grow in. Dwarf tomatoes are even better, I pop them in anywhere I have extra space! So far I only have Tiny Tim and Orange Hat, which are Cherry tomatoes. I’d love to try a dwarf variety that makes larger tomatoes. I’ll definitely be checking your website in the fall! I love that there seem to be more and more dwarf varieties coming out recently.

Holy moly your tomato plants are so dark green and gorgeous. Ug, up here in SLO county we have still been cold, my garden is so sad looking! Can’t wait until we finally WARN UP!! When you are talking about dwarf tomatoes, what size fruit are they producing. I bought some “tiny Tim” tomato seeds this year, and am SUPER excited to try em out ❤️

It can vary quite a bit! There are "micro" varieties, but there are also some that produce pretty much a "normal-sized" fruit. We'll keep you all updated too!

Dwarf tomatoes are fantastic if you need to cloche or cover your plants to prevent furry critters from snacking on your fruit! Every year we battle raccoons, rabbits, rats, and other lovely creatures and we’ve moved to only planting dwarf plants so we can pop an inverted gopher basket over the top (with garden staples) as fruit begins to ripen. Thanks for offering these seeds, I’ll definitely be purchasing!

Where's the follow up on the dwarfs? You seem to advocate for them and I wanted to see your results. How was production compared to the others? How did they do without a trellis? How did they stand up to disease? They're cute, but I want to see the results if possible. Thanks.

They were amazing! We got so wrapped up in production, seed processing and packaging we did not have time for more videos but we still have lots of them on the farm. I’ll will schedule a follow up video 😍

What variety was the dwarf you were growing in the vid? My orange hats were half that size this year and I'm guessing the two gal grow bag I used was too small.

Yes! Those are way too small!

Interesting that you are exploring the world of dwarf tomatoes! I'm a fan of their growth habit (compact, not quite determinate but slow growing) and their delivery of medium sized fruits (cherry tomatoes never make it into my kitchen, they are an in-the-garden snack). I don't trellis or stake them and they fit into those empty spots throughout the garden! In Pacific Beach, it's been too cool for tomatoes too ripen quite yet; but the dwarf varieties are growing beautifully, prolifically setting flowers and fruit. I'm growing Sweet Scarlet, Geranium Kiss (early blight resistant), Sleeping Lady Dwarf, Dwarf Beauty King, Willa's Cariboo Rose, and Tumbling Tom (for the straw bale garden). I'm looking forward to seeing which varieties end up in your catalog:) Tho it's likely that what does well on your Ramona farm may struggle a bit on the coast.

Thanks for the informative video. I have had great success growing fall/winter tomatoes in zone 9b without any blossum end rot issues but my spring/summer tomatoes are 50% infected with BER. I grow them in 27 gallon containers and put gypsum and other amendments and fertilizer in the hole at planting and have them on drip for consistent watering. Will the dwarf tomatoes provide a better resistance to BER? My fall/winter tomatoes were terrific thanks to your recommendation.
@SanDiegoSeedCompany2 жыл бұрын
Great question. Any plant can get BER and it has to do with lack of calcium and irregular watering. Calcium can be in the soil but not “bio-available” to the plant if watering is inconsistent. Water deeply and consistently and add an organic fertilizer with calcium in it. Any “tomato” fertilizer will have it. Hopes it helps.
