"Quality of living" is very relative. People in the U.S. pay less taxes, so they have higher incomes. However, in western Europe that tax money goes to infrastructure, universal healthcare and education. Also, service jobs are paid fairly and there is a way better economic safety net preventing people from falling through the cracks in times of need. Consumerism isn't everything. Many U.S. - expats will tell you that. Eastern Europe again is a different story, entirely.

Agreed for the most part, however, US pays more in TAX revenue than any European country. Our TAX goes towards public health (free) and support programmes for former prisoners, the elderly, child abuse, homeless people and the US Tax pays for Military and Space Agencies, as stated in a 2022 White House Report. The US has higher rates compared to Eastern European countries (Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary) and when you add on your Health TAX that is pretty dam high as well.

In Finland you can get tractor-, moped- and light four wheel (micro car, atv) license at the age 15. Couple years back they changed it so that with special permission you could get the car license at the age 17 instead of 18. I would say that was bad move 'cause every week some 17 year old has rolled his parent's car at 200 km/h. Probably only wise guy with this special permission is Kalle Rovanperä, 2x wrc champion

The US constitution actually says that the federal drinking age in the US is 18, and before the 1980s many states had an 18+ drinking age. To get around the constitution they passed a law in the 80s saying that states that chose to have a drinking age lower than 21 are not eligable for federal highway funds. Since no state can afford to pay for highways without those funds, every state "voluntarily" chose to raise their drinking age to 21. Before that change, some states like Maine had 18+ for wine and 21+ for liqour.

also, if you truly live in a rural area, there is a good chance you can travel for miles on dirt roads with practically no traffic. Idk the reasons, but I can definitely imagine parents there letting their kids drive to the store and things. While the whole state would not be rural, it could still seem more culturally normal to see younger people driving in that state and for it to seem less taboo than in states where people are likely facing much more dangerous and complicated traffic conditions.

On the topic of folks getting their own place to live, I was rather impressed with some of the multi-generational homes in Greece. I saw more than a few multi-story reinforced-concrete buildings. Most had 2-3 stories on them but no roofs to speak of. The structural columns jutting from the top floor with fingers of rebar wrapped up from the elements. I was told that they were multi-generational homes, and that the families added another story to the building for each new family living in the building. The younger ones got to live on the newest floor and walk the most steps.

You can get a driver's license for a car from the age of 17 now, before that the limit was 18. The reason for this may be that there is a shortage of drivers. Most families have only 1 car, and a child does not go to school by car :)

In Sweden you can start practice driving at 15 years and 9 months, but you can't get your driver's license until you turn 18. It is considered that by the time you are 18, the human brain has matured so much, that it can receive all that amount of information and impressions you get when you sit behind the wheel and drive a car much safer on your own, out in traffic.

Mass secularisation is mostly a post WWII thing in Western-Europe, starting in the 60s especially. Also in Eastern-Europe because of communism. It is kind of stabilizing though I believe, because of immigration but also because people do still search for spirituality. Tractors you can drive on the road at sixteen here (NL), with a licence. You could also drive a Mercedes Unimog that way, and keep driving it without a full licence, but that backdoor has been closed by now I guess. Many European students don't go to campus but just rent a room in the city, often a house shared with 2 up to 15 other students. It differs per country but here that is their home adress and many soon don't go 'home' that often anymore.

A few remarks concerning France: First, we certainly do not have that many military personnel, which right now is unfortunate considering how pro active our own president is trying to be in the Ukraine dossier. They probably include the Gendarmerie, which is a sort of countryside police force. Second, like many countries, there are significant differences within France. That is why I have always been a bit bored by French stereotypes. Our country is an assemblage of cultures and languages, even though they tend to disappear. At the beginning of the 20th century, half of the metropolitan French population did not speak French but one of many local languages. We have Celts in Brittany (you will see signs written in the local Celtic language, and hear it on radios), the southern half is home to the Occitan language (for example, if you go to Toulouse, subway announcements are made in both French and Occitan). In the southwest near Spain, the Basques, to their credit, are probably the ones doing the most to preserve their language and culture. In the southeast, there are Italian dialects, and in the northeast, Germanic dialects. And in between, tons of local dialects. Broadly speaking, you can literally divide France in two, with the northern half consisting of people with Celtic/Germanic genetics and the southern half consisting of people with Celtic/Latin genetics. To give some context, I remember my grandmother telling me that during WWI, her parents' generation in southwest France received waves of refugees from northern France. The locals called them "northern Boches" (Northern because they came from northern France, and "Boche," a slang term, because they had North European physical characteristics). Despite the fact that under the Republic, France has had a strong push toward cultural and linguistic unification, these differences are still visible in customs, food (hence why speaking about "french cuisine" doesn't makes a lot of sense to me) and even the economy. I think my point is that there are more differences among French people than among American people, who tend to share much more similar customs across the country. This makes comparing the US to the whole of Europe, with its myriad ethnicities, local cultures, and countries with very different fates even in recent history, a strange exercice.

@@adeliomoro2069 Oh wow! Here you need a 17 hour base course first, a total of 14 hours of on the road and practical stuff then a theoretical exam that you have to pass. We have two AM classes here. AM 146 for 2 wheels or 3-4 wheels up to 150kg, and AM 147 for 3-4 wheels >150kg. Both are are identical except you practice with the appropriate vehicle I believe. The base 17 hour course only applies for people under 25. Except the driving in the dark portion of it. You can actually do this at school as an elective subject in 10th grade if you want. Back when I got my "M" license as it was called here at the time I only attended some required theory classes and had some practical driving with a bunch of other students and the teacher up front or in the rear of the convoy of mopeds :) We had no exam that we had to pass.

The NBER file that was shown read that 34% of Japanese smoke. I would argue that figure may be outdated. My wife is from Japan and we travel there every few years. On our last visit I was stunned how tobacco use has plummeted. The Japanese are fashion-conscious and it is decidedly unfashionable to smoke in Japan right now, even out on public sidewalks where "No Smoking" signs are painted right onto the pavement. My wife's family owns a liquor and tobacco shop and commented on our last visit how tobacco sales have almost disappeared.

As for the Bible Belt, Nashville is said to be the buckle; it's been a major publishing center for Bibles and other Christian materials (Thomas Nelson, Lifeway, Abingdon Press, Holman, etc.). The note about China's military spending was a bit of a surprise. They have way more people, though; I'd wonder about the size of their army, it's got to be bigger than that of the US.

Sun: Mountain barriers perpendicular to prevailing winds (the West Coast and the Rockies are N-S; Europe's highest mountains are usually W-E, which lets more clouds go further inland. Continent shape: The continental US is more exposed to continental polar (dry air mass) than Europe is, makes for more opportunity for clear skies. Distance from sea: more of the US is more distant from the sea than Europe is (further inland usually means less moisture and clouds).*Religion* : Don't forget, half of Texas' population is in well-established major metros. Urbanization tends to water down religious beliefs (DFW's population is approaching Chicagoland's now; Houston not far behind; Austin, culturally stands out with a left to far left culture).

Even children under the legal driving age may drive on private land. So, farmers' kids often drive tractors, etc from as young as their feet may reach the pedals. So, that argument for the Dakotas is redundant. Also, few European countries limit the age at which children may drink at home. In the Land of the Free, even what children do at dinner with parents is regulated. In the UK, 5-yr olds may drink under adult supervision at home.

In NZ, we have a census every five years. Back in 1991, our rate of atheism/agnosticism was 20.2% 1996 - 24.9% 2001 - 29.6% 2006 - 34.9% 2013 - 41.9% (earthquake in Christchurch '11, pushed back two years). 2018 - 48.2% of which 38.6% was atheist. When the results come out from last years census, I'm expecting it to be in the mid-50s. With 44-45% atheism.

I don't think agnostics have increased in Europe the past 10 years, it haven't in Denmark, but you are right you get a higher number if in the survey they ask "do you believe in a higher power" than if asked "do you believe in God", most people who say yes they believe in a higher power or "there is something more to the universe" when asked what religion do you identify the most with say Christianity, it's just there have been a lot of anti religious debate for many decades so many feels if they say I believe in God or I'm religious it means they are very religious like Americans in the Bible belt and Danes certainly aren't , when asked "are you an atheist" only 13% say yes, that's a surprise for many as many claim the Nordic is the most non religious

The similarities are more baffling than the differences, but I'd need far too many pages to properly get into it. In Canada we have 19 as the drinking age. We also technically get less sunlight per year, but this is because the country gets a concentration of it in the summer months ... in Nunavut, Yukon and the Northwest Territories there are weeks on end where there's literally no sunset, it just stays up. I wouldn't take the "belief in God" one too seriously, since it doesn't address how separate religious denominations define God. If people haven't unanimously defined God the same way, they can't mark the same threshold.

In the UK you don’t need a driving license to drive on private land or a road legal car for that matter.. So no age limit applies.. I would imagine that the farm area you mentioned with the driving age limits of 14 would have the same rules as the state can’t govern over private land in that regard I would have thought that if it was farmland would be irrelevant as who’s to stop someone of any age driving on private land..

Hewwo Nos Protocolos, I think there are some remarks I can make about the religious statistics. From the Pew Research study I can see they did not bother to include any statistics for eastern Europe. Given the vast amount of churches over there and knowing some people from that area, I can confidently say that would have made for an interesting map, possibly the opposite from the one about the development index. I do find it interesting that the Pew Research documented that there are religious people who "do not believe in the Biblical God". I can only assume that these are Muslims then? The amount of Jews/Hindu's/Buddhists is very minimal in Europe so unless PR has included "nature Gods" or some archaic beliefs/Gods (Greek gods? Roman gods? Egyptian gods?) I have no idea what that could mean.
