How Do Geologists find gold? - Epithermal Deposits

Gold deposits are getting harder to find. Since the 1980s, the rate of discovery has decreased dramatically. This means it is less likely geologists looking for new deposits will be able to go out and find outcropping systems.
At Orogen Royalties, geologists use the understanding of mineral systems to predict where gold might occur below the surface if there aren’t any gold bearing outcrops. An example of this would be low sulfidation epithermal systems. These systems are ancient hot springs or geothermal systems in which hot water ascends through faults and fractures shallow in Earth’s crust. Where the water begins to boil, gold and silver drop out to form veins and breccias. Other elements, such as mercury, remain mobile as the water turns to acidic steam. This mercury-rich steam travels all the way to the surface leaving leached rocks with mercury minerals, such as cinnabar, behind. Geologists looking for gold systems can look for mercury-rich minerals at surface and use them as a proxy for a more gold and silver rich system at depth.
These geologic observations can be paired with emerging technologies such as spectral remote sensing, which measures visual and infrared light reflected from rocks on Earth’s surface to map zoning and clay mineralogy that can help us determine where we are in a mineral system.
The team at Orogen used techniques discussed in this video to identify the Silicon property, which is now a developing royalty asset. Other projects in our portfolio including Elba, Baby Doe, and Kalium Canyon were also identified using this methodology.

How does a geologist find Gold? They hire a helicopter, then fly around until they see the locals mining it.

Thats to say the least the only massive gold deposits left are already known about and kept well hidden. Ir kept in states that have banned the mining of certain minerals. I believe virginia is one.

Patrick We’ll look at some examples. They know of gold deposits in Alaska but won’t give permission to mine it. It’s the same with oil. I almost think some politicians want these deposits left and then companies will go bust or give up and then they can buy it and in 40 years change the politics and be rich. Some families of political power go back a century. Playing the long game for some powerful families doesn’t seem like a stretch.

@@koltoncrane3099 true as that may be I believe lots of smaller branches of larger veins are still undiscovered, tho most the surrounding area isn’t fit for comercial mining at any point plenty there for small guys in some cases

The discovery rate is largely dependent on the price of the commodity and the permitting process. There has been a fundamental change to the exploration world as the internet captured a lot of money and fiber optics and wireless replaced a lot of copper cable. At PDAC a few years back the word was risk money was going to the marijuana industry. In the last few years the price of copper has driven a lot of new discoveries. I can rattle off a good number...josephina, filo del sol...onto...on and on. In the gold world...there seem to be plenty of folks with great rocks...large historic districts in Australia have undergone resurgence.
