Well... I got a notification, that a new video popped up while I was working on some task and I really wanted to hear this, because, yeah there are quite a few ideas and unfinished projects in the drawer. As you started talking, I thought, "Man, you got to write this down!" I opened a notepad, rewind a bit to hear it again and started typing in. I listened to the finish and finally realized this was all a distraction from the task I was working on. Anyway, I saved the notes, forgave myself for this slip, then made another slip by wanting to add this comment, so now off to forgiving myself again and continue on working. But thanks for the video and some really good advices.

Great points, i'd agree with most of the ideas, but given many here are on a "learning" path, might be a good example for a "DoTo" list application? Would assert many of the videos on front end web frameworks will use a ToDo application as a sample project to start with. Would agree it is a good simple amp that will force you to do a full stack app, and the best thing you just helped yourself...? V1 would be as suggested keep it simple and get it done, and then evaluate yourself, is this easy and useful as is? Yes/no and think how as a user what you like or not, again new "todo" items? The idea to keep it simple and use notepad, might be good for some, but if on a physical notebook, have to admit i'm a slob and easily lost (ooops did i mention i'm a messy slob :) And generally saving it in a text file, same thing will lose it after a while but things i host locally on my own web site, never lose them now...

Thanks. I think this really helped me focus. While I had an MVP feature list, I really sat down and justified every single element whittling it down to a "make do" amount. I'm quite use to keeping a list of nice-to-haves, especially when I've been on projects where I've have had testers who think very complex things (borderline unreasonable) are possible very easily from a web app.

It sounds like you need to work on planning more. In the planning process, you should identify the areas where you don't feel comfortable doing the work. Then, you can practice those areas before you start your project to ensure you know how to proceed.

Other thing that I think it's useful to think is that you don't need to make your app perfect on the first try. Sometimes I get stuck thinking "well, what if this is the bad way of doing things?".

I have a question. What if sometimes it takes longer to write down an idea than to implement it. There was once years ago when I had an idea in the middle of the night to help on testing with a game package. I realized it took too long to write out all the details for it. So I ended up implementing the feature in about an hour then went back to bed. That ended up being a huge success because I had many more options for testing the game package.

I never imagined it would be this hard to find a job as a software developer with a bachelors in comp. sci., I didn't work in the industry after college aside from freelance but ~7 years later I want to do software dev. After several months I have had to turn down several jobs that wanted me to relocate, and now I'm turning my attention to relocation to the one city of my choosing where the rest of my family lives. I am working with a recruiter who seems like a nice guy, but it's still extremely slow. How do I get the interview? Can I send my resume somewhere for an honest opinion? My personal opinion of my Github is that it's pretty darn good, but I hope a company would see the same.
@IAmTimCorey2 жыл бұрын
I can offer a few pieces of advice. First, remember that your degree will help you check a box on the application but that's about it. it will not give you the actual experience companies are looking for. So, just don't expect it to do the heavy lifting for you. Second, having a GitHub profile is great but it doesn't really show a hiring manager anything quickly. They have to sift through the code to see something and even then it is tough. I would recommend creating a portfolio. It can link to your GitHub projects, but the first step will be having a quick description of each project along with screenshots and a brief list of the topics/technologies that you are showing off in that project. Even if the project doesn't have a UI, figure out something to put in a picture. Each project should have three pictures. Your goal is to give the hiring manager something that they can see, understand, and relate to within five seconds. Third, trying to relocate to another city is hard. You are looking for jobs where they probably want to start quickly and you aren't necessarily that person since you have to move. If you can explain how you can be available to start quickly, that would help. Put that in your cover letter. Finally, keep everything brief. If you see a paragraph of text anywhere (resume, cover letter, portfolio, etc.), cut it down. Make it three bullet points. If you see a list of bullet points longer than 4, cut that down too. Too much information is actually a bad thing. It makes the reviewer skim more and read less.
