I am so glad that he uses a level. My dad used to irk the heck out of me when he would mount shelves in closets on the houses we built, he would just eyeball the shelves. I remember one time I guess it was about the 7th or 8th house I had worked with him on and I went around with a level to try and prove that he was all messed up by not using a level. All of the shelves were leveled perfectly. Not only did he do with no level, but he would also do the same with mounting door frames. Again they would come out perfectly plumb and level. But the most amazing thing he could do was to cut almost anything under 24" perfectly without measuring. If you told him to cut a 2X4 17" he would just by eyeballing it. I remember my first time seeing him do this. Tom the foreman told me to tell my dad to cut a piece 16" long and dad just picked up a piece of scrap and without measuring cut it. As I walked back to Tom to hand him the piece I measured it and it was a perfect 16". Tom just looked down at me from the second floor and told me that it does no good to second guess my dad. He was one of those carpenters that had the knack for the eyeball protocol.

The shelf brackets sometimes come with the 'legs' having different lengths. Place the bracket edge against the board that best matches the boards full width. For example if the board is 8 inches wide and you have a bracket with one leg 4 inches and the other 6 inches then place the 6 inch leg against the board and secure the 4 inch leg against the wall. The normal failure point is at the elbow of bracket so to avoid the strong lever effect of a short leg on the board (if you put something heavy at the front edge of the board) you went to fully support the board. The leg against the wall will only produce a shearing effect on the screws so there is no benefit to having a great length on that portion of the bracket. Of course if you have a long legged bracket whereby one length exceeds the length of the board then don't attach that leg against the board, use the shorter leg. :-)
@willsonjo6797 жыл бұрын
Thank You, I was questioning about this, should I attach the long leg on the board or on the wall? I think I will go with the long leg against the board and the short leg against the wall, hopefully this will produce more stable and stroger shelve.

@ken debono thank you I was curious
@samgraves91652 жыл бұрын
@@willsonjo679 I know this is an old post but hopefully others will see this. These brackets are intended for the long "leg" to go against the wall and the short "leg" to extend outward and attach to the shelf. That is how you obtain the most strength from these shelves. I'f you are going to be putting a lot of weight on these then that's how you should mount them. However, if you know you'll be putting minimal weight on these, you could attach the shorter leg to the wall.

Long side of bracket is fitted against the wall. Recommend a bracket every 50cm (19.6in) in a solid wall or to coincide with studs in a stud wall.
@IMOO18962 жыл бұрын
Something that no one mentions when using the first shelf bracket you demonstrated, which edge goes to the top, the long end or short end? Yes, it seems simple, but if you’re starting wit finding studs, then tell the correct orientation of the bracket. If it doesn’t matter, just say so.

Useful video, thanks! Can I ask what you would do if you drill into the 2x4 without realising its there? You've then got a hole in the wood that would be too big for a screw but also won't support an anchor? Thanks.

Oh, and how did you get it to stick to the wall? The only wall mounted ones I've seen have a spike and then you wind up with an extra hole in the wall which I don't want. I couldn't make out exactly how you had yours mounted, but it looked different.
@Cat152109 жыл бұрын
Hi, I'm literally just starting to teach myself how to do DIY stuff (just got a house). Can I ask why, on the first shelf, you drilled a hole first and then used a Philips head to put the screw in, but then for the other side you just used the drill to put the screw in directly? Does it matter which method you use?
@garrasonica8 жыл бұрын
+Cassie B He used two different types of anchors: the first you have to screw the anchor and then the screw itself after. The second type is a push-type of anchor that expands when you put the screw in. The method will depend on the type of anchor you use. Here he shows those two types, but there some other types around. You can always ask the guys at a hardware store and they will explain to you how each anchor works and the best use for each. Awesome that you are into DYI, so many people pay a lot for stuff that could be easily done.

@thazanm9 жыл бұрын
Use the special screws/nails made for concrete walls, instead of regular screws. If it is concrete wall, no need to look for studs. Again it depends on the thickness of the wall.

@TravisHansenMN6 жыл бұрын
My dad says “heighth.” I get it: “width and heighth,” but it drives me crazy. It’s wide and high, not wide and hide. That only introduces more problems with vowel sounds... Just try to remember that some people are thinkers, some people are doers. You can be both, but you have to appreciate anyone who can do one well. We know what they mean, and they mean what they say. 🤷🏻♂️
