Pressing open vs to one side. I expect lots of use, and wear and tear on the life of my quilts. I press to the side because the seam is stronger for when kids jump on the beds-even though they have been you’d not to; when kids are pulling as they dispute which quilt will be the floor vs the roof of the fort; the extra strength as the kids wrap the baby in the quilt, FYI baby is the 120 pound dog.

I know you said you don't want to order fabric but I really think the floral goes so well with the fabrics in the heart. Other than being red, the dots don't have a connection to it. Just my opinion. I love Area 51. I think I will X-stitch that for my sewing room door. I always press to the side. I like nesting seams and feel the seam is more stable. To me, open seams. are harder to match up.

I always advise closed seams to beginners as sometimes their stitching is a bit too long or loose and as often they first quilt is a baby quilt and therfore often washed, a little bit of batting will come out. This doesn't coordinate to today's topic, but wanted to note I'm waiting to do my Block 5 of "Home Is..." until I see what the other blocks will be & then decide what fabrics to use. BUT because of the runner idea, I made 2 table toppers yesterday for my best friend's sister!! I used blocks left over from a bargello jacket I made years ago. I did 4 strips for each one because that made it more to the size of her tables. She doesn't know she's getting them, I'd asked her what size her tables are a couple days ago, so she may have SOME idea I'm making her something:)

I was told that if you press the seams open you shouldn't stitch in the ditch as the quilting can compromise the piecing stitches. I think Kimberley was asked about that the other week in Behind the Seams for one of the sewcialites blocks.

I can see the connection Janet has made with Hearty, having a mini maritime theme in her book, 'Ahoy me Hearty's' come to mind. An old maritime saying. It might be this old English saying did not carry over into the USA, I know it isn't used much here in Australia which was also colonised by England. Thank for showing us the book and loved your discussion about pressing seams. Now I don't feel so bad 'cos I alternate depending upon what I am sewing at the time. Enjoy your day. Cheers.

To me, if you are going to sleep under/use/wash a quilt, then it is better to press to the side -- that way there is less chance of opening a seam. For less handled quilts, I think pressing open is great! Just my humble opinion. :)

Your heart block and your heart quilt are beautiful. I watched your scrappy video yesterday. I really love the idea of making the triangle pieces separate from each other. Mine is scrappy, but, when I put my sections together, some of my fabrics are touching each other. I thought I had enough fabrics so that it would be super scrappy. It’s still pretty, though, and I’m not taking it apart! 😂 As for seams being open, I love to do that to get my blocks flat, but I have heard long-arm quilters say they don’t like to quilt quilts with open seams. I always lower my stitch length just so seams don’t come open when they stretch it out while quilting. I love seeing you every day.

Love the rainbow quilt, so fun. Now I want to make one, oh may too many projects and not enough time. How do you get so much done?! I am working on the small heart and have so much trouble sewing the rows together, the bulk of the seams coming together. I pressed the seams open and now I will try pressing one way and nesting but that gets so confusing row to row. Right now my first 3 rows are a mess but I will straighten them out and get it done!
