13:42 - 14:20 Yeah, the lore of 40K is basically that everything is shit, and in the case of the Imperium it's shit because they made it shit through their own ignorance and hatred. It's surprising how many people seem to miss this and assume that because the Imperium is the setting's representation of the human race that it must be both righteous and justified. The Imperium is neither of those things; it's a hateful fascist empire that created its own misery, refuses to acknowledge the part it played in its own downfall, and consequently falls further into decline.

However the alternative is far, far worse.......
@88Switches4 жыл бұрын
@@FlacidDonkeyGuy The alternative is far, far worse according to the blind and willfully ignorant Imperium. The alternative could have been much, much better, but the Emperor created the shithole of 40K through his own warmongering and hatred. The alternative could have been forming alliances with the T'au and Eldar, instead of waging a galactic war based on nothing but xenophobia. The alternative could have been accepting that humanity may have changed a little on the worlds the Emperor rediscovered during the Crusade, instead of annihilating billions of people just because their planetary governor disagreed with him. The Emperor could have created 20 brilliant ambassadors and negotiators to unite the galaxy through diplomacy and reason, rather than 20 war-hungry generals. Think about how much of an effect a single act of exterminatus has on chaos. When a million guardsmen are slaughtered in a single battle, how much negative energy is released into the warp? Think about how much the warp is fueled by the endless misery and suffering of humanity in the 41st millennium. The alternative is only far, far worse because humanity's actions have created a far, far worse alternative. That's the tragedy of 40K, and the point that so many people seem to miss. We're constantly told that the brutal dictatorship of the Emperium is better than the alternative, but if it wasn't for 10,000 years of the brutal dictatorship of the Emperium, the current alternative wouldn't exist.

@@88Switches No the alternative is the death of the god-emperor. And a second eye of Terror creating a larger rent in reality. With a second coming of the old night with no way to navigate the stars. And it's funny new retcon has made it so, a woman is effectively responsible for the heresy. And the shit show that is the 41st millennium. The Imperium is harsh and horrible out of necessity. It's a ends justly the means universe peace with xenos? It was tried before and old night happened. What did the xeno do during old night they subjugate and enslave. The tau are no different and want to convert and conquer and are shady AF. And are slowly becoming a dark mirror of the Imperium. The eldar unwittingly birthing a god and in doing so created old night. And probably affecting the AI in the process, causing the war the iron men. So humans rightly don't use automation now. To improve there lives incase it turns rouge again. Something that will happen to the Tau. And with slaanesh being finally birthed ended old night. Only after destroying human civilization in the process. Peace with them? When one half has rape and murder to stay alive. And the others will happily send billions of human lives to the torch to save just one of there own. With probably these two exceptions, the "good" eldar and Tau really are worthless ally's. Both races don't have the numbers to be any real help in fighting everything else on a galactic scale. And appart from those two exceptions, most everything else wants you dead unequivocally. All the tau and eldar have is some technical know how.and the admech now has a Mary Sue, so humans have that covered. Kill the xeno purge the heretic for him on earth. I play Death Guard BTW.
@Highlaw4 жыл бұрын
@@88Switches Nah, the alternative would be to eventually be swept away by your own, necrons, orkz or tyranids (well, anyone really) with no resistance. There is no such thing as being a benevolant purely diplomatic society in 40k (in the long term). That alternative you wish for has been manifested hundreds of times throughout 40K, be it remnants of humanity outside the influence of the emperor who did assymilate with xenos, or multiple xenos who did the same - nearly all of them wholy annihilated by someone else in a short span of time. Remember that even in the most peaceful diplomacy, violence is the highest power, that (or the threat thereof) IS what keeps it peaceful - no exceptions. Furthermore, things were already far gone before the Crusade, even before the Emperor manisfested himself, and even before humans existed in the first place. Also don't you find it ironic that you'd want to ally with T'au and Eldar, when T'au as we know them are born from the corrupted Warp and Eldar are the ones (or at least a major influence) that corrupted the Warp beyond recognition? Sure, the Emperor's actions didn't help but it's not like anyone else didn't fuck up either.

Keep up the good work, and by all means post a video now & then about your personal opinions or experiences in the hobby.

Totally with you on the paint anxiety. As easy as it is to say 'just paint more minis to practice and get good', these things are really expensive and each box you buy feels like they deserve the 'perfect' job that you envisioned for them in your head - especially so if they're limited edition or rare. Its much easier to buy a new box and leave that one on the back-burner for when you're 'ready for it'.

Part of why the lore gets misconstrued is that people usually won't talk down about the faction they have chosen to play and funnel money into. It's like with sportsball teams, even if yours is horrible, you would still root for them because its "your" team. Unfortunately, that goes to extremes at times. Just like your experience with the lore being not what you expected, when I started listening to the Horus Hersey audio books I definitely had an, "Ooooh, so everyone is just an asshole." moment.

I would suggest, if you want to immerse yourself in the setting, start out reading the Ciaphas Cain novels. Its basically Baron Münchhausen in the 40k universe. It starts out with a lot black humor, and admittedly the later books get a bit less humorous and more "cereal". But i find the Cain novels to be a good entry point. You get some insight into the world, the propaganda and they are well written. I mean, you don't exactly strike me as someone that would be into Band of Brothers, if you are then check out the Gaunt's Ghosts... or if you love first person crime novels.. then Eisehorn is probably a good suggestion to get into it, but i have yet to find someone that didn't at least like the first 3ish Cain novels.
@uriance884 жыл бұрын
I'll totally second the Cain novels as a great take on the whole Imperium of Man setting (I'd call it more Blackadder/Flashman than Munchausen though). They do a good job of skewering the somewhat over the top grimdark vibe (which the original designers were trying to parody with Rogue Trader - but John Blanche's artwork set them on a particular path) Gaunt's Ghosts is definitely a grittier view of things. (And pencils in trip to Meeplemart when next travelling through Toronto on business - which given our current environment might be the 41st millennium). If you find the concept of "to best face the foes of mankind we should wear really bright armour and stand in the open blazing away" a bit silly, I refer you to the Raptors space marine chapter. (or to be even more really bright armour, although GW is very much hush hush about them in these days of "turn the darkness up to 11", the Rainbow Warriors . . . )
@rowluxillusion52354 жыл бұрын
Totally agree, it's basically Flashman in 40k, or if you've not read those think Blackadder. Also the Gaunt's Ghost's novels are a great into as well, as is Eisenhorn of course.

On your 40k diversity issue, I kinda disagree, cause firstly there are no Main Characters, and secondly, Space Marines can come in different skin tones depending on who was their Primarch, and where they were recruited from, for example, the Ultramarines Recruit from worlds that have a primarily white skinned Population, due to the environments of that world, while the Celestial Lions recruit from a world Black Skinned population, so most of their marines have Black skin and there are also Space Marines with unnatural skin colours, like the Thousand Sons who have actual red skin, or the Salamanders who have glowing red eyes and Charcoal Black skin, a Space Marine’s Primarch might also affect their Skin Colour, for example a white boy implanted with the Geneseed of the Primarch Jaghatai Khan, there’s a good chance that his skin will turn a light brown and his eyes will become Slanted to reflect how their Primarch Looked, though it isn’t guaranteed that their looks would change, and the rate of Change differs from one Primarch to another, Jaghatai Khan for example had one of the Highest Rates of Change, along With Magnus The Red, Leman Russ, Konrad Curze and Corvus Corax, while Ferrus Manus, Roboute Guilliman, Lorgar Aurelian, Lion El’Jonson, and Angron the Red Angel had some of the Lowest Rates of Change, the other Primarchs fall somewhere in between. The Sisters of Battle Can be any race depending on where their Order Recruits from. The Imperial Guard can be both Male and Female, though their Race really on which Regiment they’re from, for example The Tallarn Desert Raiders are Space Arabs, The Attilan Rough Riders are basically the Space Version of the Mongol Horde, and Maccabian Janissaries are Space Ottomans. And if you want something else you can Hombrew it, for example, there aren’t many Knight Houses that have very deep Lore, so I made my own Knight house with an Entire Backstory and Many Characters, and I based it on Ancient Arab Tribes during the Abbasid Empire’s Reign. And on top of that, you can always paint your models however you like. Diversity is not something Warhammer struggles with, infact it’s one of Warhammer’s best aspects.

Honestly i am quite happy that you will start doing some 40k content. And who knows, maybe your schemes will give me the final push to start sisters as a second army. Welcome regardless to the grimdark, and I hope you enjoy every minute of it!

I first discovered 40k when i was about 8. A really nice older boy and i became friends just over our shared interest in this. I will always remember him fondly and there will always be nostalgia when it comes to 40k with me.

Dig deep in the lore; so many good stories, from the Horus Heresy series to current 40k timeline! I think a progress VLOG on your Indomitus box would be pretty cool. Know I'll be watching 'em anyway :D Keep up the great content, Dana!

I would love a basing video. I have a box of Sisters staring at me and I have no idea how I want to base them.

Everything! I would love to see every step of the process: choosing a color scheme for the three armies, basing, painting, etc!

Thanks for this video. I like to get to know what motivates content creators and your story is common but unique. I have painted two of the Necron sides of Indomitus and one of the Space Marines for my son. I painted his as Ultramarines.

Easy way to start painting and getting it done. 1. Lower your expectations 2. Base coat everything 3. Use sade over the base coat 4. Highlight details 5. Done

Whenever Toronto stuff shows up in vids of someone I watch it's a pleasant surprise! I haven't got to visit meeplemart before pandemic but my most recent wave of hobby stuff I've picked up from them and I can't wait to get in there!

Really looking forward to seeing how you paint the sisters. They are my favorite army and I have a load of them sitting here- and I don't even play 40k!!

I actually had a small cadre of Necrons when I was into the game circa 1998, and I have to say that it is pretty accurate to say that the Necrons first came out in 2002.
@landotucker4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, they were never really a full fledged faction until 2002. IIRC there was just a lord, immortals, warriors, scarabs and the super ugly destroyers.

@@DanaHowl Best thing I did was decant all my GW Paints into Dropper Bottles. Makes it much easier to put into a Airbrush or drop onto a wet palette.
