​@@sev1120 One would need word from Atlus on if it still hurts after the initial Persona awakening, but we do know that there doesn't seem to be any blood effect, and they remove the mask much more quickly and easily on subsequent persona summons. One would also think that they'd take off their masks as soon as a fight began in order to minimize the amount of times they'd need to do so. I personally see the act as more symbolic/metaphorical (Much like everything in the Metaverse is.) The initial pain of taking the mask off is likely a symbol of how painful/hard it is to initially come out as a rebel or stand up for one's own beliefs in the face of society's structures. It would make sense that after the 'initial' coming out continued rebellion becomes less painful and more natural, to the point summoning one's persona feels very natural. TLDR the mask likely starts out as part of their face, but later is no longer part of their face and just a mask after that point.

It's more likely directly related to how Tarot cards are used in fortune telling, so probably something to do with changing your fate by literally taking it into your hands and breaking it and by doing so you allow "Yourself" to take charge, "Yourself" being the resulting persona taking action.

It annoys me that people still accept Akira as the Canon Name when Ren is the official Canon Name, same goes Makoto Yuki and Naoya(P1 Protag). At least it’s not as bad when people kept thinking that Hololive and Holostars where two separate corporations, when they’re one and the same, good thing that discussion ended last year. It’s a pet peeve that I wish some could just get over it and accept it.

I thought of it as this: A card had two sides, a unique inside, and a same-y outside. What you show outside is the same as everyone elses, bcuz we all never show our true selves, and thus, are fake, which is why we are the same, bcuz the outside is not real. The inside though, is our true self, which we hide from the outside world. By shattering the card, you are breaking that border between the true self and the outside self, thus merging them into your persona. Thats my reasoning at least.

And the most infamous thing that happened to him was Hera inducing so much insanity on him that made him kill his own wife and children. What better madness Persona than him? An alternate choice would be Achilles because he dragged Hector’s body as an act of revenge for the death of his friend Patroclus
