Fun Fact: This video did more than just teach people about aquatic mammals. It taught me more about myself. I have a congenital bone marrow defect called DBA that reduces my bone marrow's ability to produce hemoglobin. I've always noticed that I sigh a lot and people think that I'm sad or moody, but to me it's just part of my normal breathing pattern, and now I know why! My brain is just telling me to take a deep breath to get more oxygen! It's so cool to learn something about my own physiology that I never knew before...

Oddly enough, that started making me think about Bird's feet. I've read that branch dwelling birds have to flex their muscles in order to walk on a flat surface, and have to relax muscles in order to grip the branch. Curious if there's something similar in this case.

From what I understand about dolphins (for example), they only sleep with half their brain at a time, which gives them enough cognitive ability to continue rising to the surface, taking breaths, and submerging again.
@KaosKrusher
@KaosKrusher 8 жыл бұрын
at least someone who DOES (or at least tries to since I myself don't know and didn't bother to search for it yet) explain the "half-brain" part (cause a lots of comments I red are saying they use half their brain but that alone doesn't answer the question as the brain never really shuts down while sleeping (hence dreams/nightmares or sleepwalking)) so thank you mister
@jacktumbleweed
@jacktumbleweed 8 жыл бұрын
The term is "unihemispheric slow-wave sleep" and it basically lets half of the brain rest and "recharge" while the other half remains at full cognitive function. Several dolphins and whales take advantage of this as well as a number of birds (Peregrine Falcon, Common Blackbird, domestic Chicken, and several others).

They're getting close to the whole "humans breathing under water" thing, with something called the "Aquaman Particle". Look it up. It can store enormous amounts of oxygen in a minuscule amount of space, an example of which would be the oxygen content of an entire room being sucked into something the size of about a tablespoon. The problem that they're running into is that people aren't supposed to live on pure oxygen, and so until they find a way to absorb large amounts of nitrogen in a similar crystal they won't be able to make the mix of gases that we need. Still, they're getting close. ... Also, that previous example sounds like a Bond villain trap. "I've left you in this sealed room with a small pile of Aquaman crystals hidden somewhere, and you must find them before there is no more oxygen to breath. [queue the villainous laughter and walking away to leave him to his untimely demise, which he will escape from]".

They also move far more of their lung capacity. Humans change about 10% of the air in their lungs with each breath and whales go to about 90% so they are getting rid of much more CO2 each time.
