QQ - will pet animals (like cats and dogs) get a lot smarter really fast due to evolution? I mean we're pretty much making our current pets smarter by teaching them manners and tricks and then also breeding them to pass the "smart genes". Intelligence was never so useful in their lives as it is these days.
@lapincretin39779 жыл бұрын
good question tho
@merrymachiavelli20419 жыл бұрын
I've actually always wondered about that. There are some breeds of dog which have been selectively bred for forms of intelligence, such as the Border Collie, I always wondered how smart you could get a dog breed (or any other animal for that matter) to be via artificial selection. Are there particular hurdles at any point such as cranium size or psychology? Could you, theoretically, breed a dogs to fully able to understand human speech? (I'm talking listening to audiobooks and speeches, not 'Roll Over') Of course, this requires some parameters around which to measure 'intelligence' (which is surprisingly difficult, given that most definitions are deeply anthropocentric) but it still seems like it should be possible.

Jay Aegis William Slaughter Your stories are at least interesting. I was shaving in the shower and the razor slipped out of my hand. I went to catch it but it kinda sliced off a dime sized chunk of the pad of my thumb x3 due to the number of blades. While the scar has finally shrunk to a little 'bubble', the way the ridges have reformed themselves to accommodate the scar is pretty cool. I'd say it's my coolest looking scar to date; although not one that has the coolest of stories.

Here's a QQ: What is wind? I was once told it is a product of cold air "replacing" the hot air that rises. Does it have anything to do with the Earth's rotation?
@ethanlofing27989 жыл бұрын
Wind is produced from convection currents in the air. So yes, as hot air rises cooler air rushes in to "replace" it. Same thing happens to bodies of water (with the help of wind) to produce currents, and molten rock in the earths mantle which cause the tectonic plates to shift.

I have a question. How do sharp objects cut things in the atomic level? How do they even split open the bond between atoms? edit: or molecules*
@Torbox19 жыл бұрын
It is true breaking the bond on an atomic level is difficult especially if you are talking about electrons off an atom, on the level of thousands of KiloJoules per Mole. However when you get cut you are breaking the bond between MOLECULES of flesh which is not super strong and they are not super densely packed. So when you think about the width of a knife edge, super thin, and the amount of force you apply, maybe 15 kg lets say, the energy on that knife edge exponentially increases the thinner it is.
@maxrenaud77959 жыл бұрын
Genji le Tale It doesn't, the cut is at the intermolecular level, sharp things don't split molecular chemical bonds just separate the molecules from each other. Things are held together by a variety of intermolecular forces which then are over come when an object is put in between them. Think of people holding hand playing red rover, the people are the molecules and their hands are the relatively weak intermolecular interactions. It is the hands that break, not the people, unless your game gets particularly rowdy lol. These bonds tend to include hydrogen bonds, van der walls, electrostatic attraction, ect.

@TheDajamster9 жыл бұрын
I think he already did, either for Scishow or Crash Course, though I can't remember the episode right now.
@maxrenaud77959 жыл бұрын
Zé Bianchi a smell is just a chemical that interacts with particular receptors in our nasal passages. Particularly smelly chemicals are volatile meaning that they go into the gas phase and by dispersion eventually reach our nose. Like a key entering a particular lock certain chemical structures bind with certain receptors giving different smells or a combination of smells. Humans have evolved to be particularly keen to smells that present danger, such as rotting meat. So even if that particular rotting meat chemical, perhaps a sulfur compound, is only maybe a few parts per billion we still sense it.
@zezo699 жыл бұрын
Max Renaud Thanks, but I kinda figured that. I just can't get my mind around the fact that if I take a cd next to my nose, I can feel its smell, and it's gona smell like that probably for a long time. I find it quite hard to figure where it's coming from, and with those visual aids they use it'd probably be better to understand, and quite interesting, at least for me.
@TheDajamster9 жыл бұрын
Zé Bianchi How's this for a visual, every time you smell something, it's because molecules from that 'something' have broken free & made it to you & up your nose. So, if you're sitting down to some backyard bar-b-q and suddenly you get a waft of stench from the neighbor's kennel, you have just been hit by tiny (too small to see even) particles of dog poo. Bon apetit'. And my apologies.

@Lttlemoi9 жыл бұрын
From the top of my head, I think that there are two historical events that radically changed our diet. The first being the invention of agriculture. Since then, wheat and rice have been a very important food resource in Eurasia. The second big change came with the rediscovery of the Americas by European settlers. Before Europeans rediscovered the Americas, people in Europe ate a lot of wheat and legumes such as beans and peas. The native people in the Americas however had a.o. corn and potatoes. Since then, potatoes became a very important part of our diet. Likewise, the European settlers brought a lot of their food to the Americas, e.g. bananas, cattle and horses. An example of a more gradual change in our diet is the growing diversity of fruit. A lot of the fruit that we take for granted originally started out as tropical fruits. Apples, for example, originally come from Turkey, but today, they are grown all over Europe. I'm sure that if you look into this stuff more, you'll find a lot of stuff that has changed over time.

On the topic of fingerprints: A couple months or so ago I had extremely bad eczema on my ring finger. That fingerprint does not visibly exist anymore. Any idea if it will come back? It also does not have what is required for good friction, for instance if I try to play piano that finger has a tendency to slip while my other fingers don't at all. It doesn't have what seems to be some kind of oil anymore either. So it's still dry.
@cosmodewit9 жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure fingerprints have the ability to grow back even if you would cut of a small part of the skin.
@pawelkorzeniewski48979 жыл бұрын
The friction ridge pattern may become less pronounced but it will not change, unless you get a scar or similar, in which case some loss or ridge detail may occur. There are actually several stories about people trying to remove or change their fingerprints by cutting or dipping the fingers in acid but it doesn't work (and any scarring will also make a fingerprint more unique and can be used as an additional detail in the analysis). I'd hypothesise that you will still have the ability/risk of depositing identifiable fingerprints/fingermarks although it might become more easier smudged during deposition. When it comes to the oily residue, it mainly comes from your face (eyes, side of nose, ears) because humans tend to touch their face. Sometimes your hands may become dry and you might not be able to see anything with the naked eye even on surfaces such as glass, however very often you can still develop the fingermark and use it for forensic purposes.
@jreinhart33829 жыл бұрын
cosmodewit is correct, unless your eczema was so bad that it caused scarring, your fingerprint should return. I have known people who have scars from burning or slicing their fingers that changed distorted their fingerprints, but you have no need to worry.

Hypothetically, If one were to build a bridge around the world held with support beams and all those support beams were destroyed simultaneously instantaneously would the bridge be suspended in the air?

I've always been told I have the most beatifully symmetric fingerprints they've ever seen. I have extremely circular fingerprints on all my fingers. I don't know wether to say they're whorls or loops. But I do know they're symmetrical and really round. I have the girliest softest hands you'll ever touch as well.
