I have a full set my dad had custom built by Kenneth Smith in the ‘60’s, driver, 3wd, 5wd and irons 1 through SW. I’ve compared these to my Ping wds and Mizuno irons. Technology sure has brought forth advancements plus I can remember hitting these myself when I was a young kid in the ‘70’s. Watching this episode has inspired me to take his set and play them one day. I’ll have to get them regripped but it should be fun. Keep up the content.

This really shows me why I am awe struck watching golf from the ‘70’s i.e. final rounds of the Masters. Prior to modern equipment (metal woods, ball etc…) it is amazing to me how the guys scored so well and hit the ball as far as they did. Thank you for the video.

Cool old clubs, especially since they were your coaches. Like vintage golf clubs and wish I still had a set of persimmon woods and a driver. Fun to step back in time...sometimes.🙂

Those were solid vintage clubs! I tried others in the past with much worse results.

I have a set of stiff Hogan Apex Edge forged clubs, nice feel, top line a medium. The stiff go straighter than my gamers, but not as far! Nice piece. Thanks

So I have always used my MacGregor irons and still play off a 2 handicap. Whilst using astro turf indoor mats, it’s common for spin to drop significantly from more lofted irons. This is because the strike location will be above the sweet spot due to the ball sitting up on artificial mats. This commonly doesn’t occur as the irons get lower in loft. A high strike on an older blade like that will launch higher and fall short due to lack of backspin. This is even more exaggerated these days with modern low spin golf balls. Your 9-iron loft is 45 and 6-iron 33

I played Haig Ultra iron blades from the early 70’s when I started playing in college. They were given to me for helping a neighbor load his furniture onto a U-Haul when he moved away from the fraternity house. The set included a red vinyl bag, McGregor persimmon woods, and a blade putter. I could hit driver 225 in the air on good swings. I recall my 7 iron was consistently 140 yards. I had played those for 10 years until my father-in-law gave me his bag with a set of Ping Eye 2s and metal woods. He said he bought new clubs and was embarrassed playing with me with the cracking vinyl bag and old sticks. He gave me a replacement bag again 25 years later with a set of Taylormade r7s when he upgraded to Calloway Big Bertha’s with graphite shafts. I inherited his final bag when he passed in 2023. I only play them at his home course in Las Vegas during the winter. I keep the r7 clubs at home in Vancouver WA for summer golf.

Thank you so much for sharing! What course in Vegas? I played a few course there. My brother lives there. I played Stallion Mountain a few times, the Paiute and another course that I can't remember.

@mistahshorthitter the family home is on the course in Los Prados in North Las Vegas. It’s a short but tight course with challenging green complexes.

So standard lofted sets were known as 20-30-50 lofts. That is 20 2-iron, 30 5-iron and 50 PW. My clubs are MacGregor Muirfield 20th from 1987 and comply with the above standards

I may have these checked. They could have changed over the last 60 years! Thank you for the information.

I have a set of Northwestern irons, aluminum shafts, that my dad had made. Small heads but still feel solid when you hit balls. Another great video. 🏌️♂️

It would be interesting to compare clubs with about the same loft, at least with the irons. You might have addressed that, if you did, sorry.

I talked about having the lofts measured. I don't know what they are to compare.

The number on the club means nothing. The old set of irons you could stamp SW and 8 iron on the 9 and 6 just like the new ones do. Loft is everything. The number on the club means nothing. Woods, well yeah there is a big difference.

I dont think those clubs can be compared. Lofts in in the modern irons are probably 6 to 8 degrees stronger. And way more technology in the woods.

Sorry, but the outdoor test means nothing. From that distances, once reached the green, you could not even say for sure which ball was hit with which club.
