It has probably been the best year for Star Citizen ever. The irony being, it is also the year that supposedly starfield was going to kill it. And it isn't even over yet!

Starfield was like all Todd's games a utter flop purely for the sake of money. The times when Bethesda made game for the sake of making good beloved games are over. 😡

It was an extremely rough year for SC up until Citizencon. Pyro on the tech preview channel is an obvious bid for player goodwill but the next 12 months of updates will be absolutely crazy if CIG delivers on even 60% of the promises they set down during Citizencon. Meanwhile, Starfield took everything interesting in the Skyrim/Fallout 4 overworld map and hid it behind a minimum of one loading screen and a 500m-1km walk across barren boring terrain without any vehicles to at least make things go faster. It's like Todd tried to make No Man's Skyrim in an engine totally incapable of properly supporting those design goals, it'd need a complete rewrite and that's a 10-15 year skunkworks project Todd can't get away with.

I think SC is on par with Elite on stability. Odyssey is still sufferibg low fps. So little by little Elite is biting the dust.

As a long-time SC player and a former ED CMDR who walked away well before Odyssey, I can't even make fun of the fact that, at the time Odyssey launched, SC performed better on various machine specs. As much as I'd want to clap back at all the people who foolishly were all "lmao SC is dead because of this, doing SC before SC can do SC" before everyone got to play Odyssey and see how bad it was at launch, I can't. HOW do you do that? That takes effort. The fact that Odyssey was released in an early beta state to get it out before the end of the fiscal year is definitely why and how, but just... wow. Elite is the rare game that released stable and optimized and slowly degraded into an alpha state, a reverse SC.

The irony is that the elite community single handedly ran the tech demo meme on star citizen for years, failing to acknowledge that technology was the very foundation that elite needed to build as well. So when Odyssey tried to make that leap, their tech simply wasn't ready as it had been neglected and seriously underestimated the challenges cig had been battling for years prior. The result: elite is now dead both as a game and from a technology standpoint.

@@walawala-fo7ds Armchair game designers being pulled down to earth by Odyssey's hubris is an exquisite and rare vintage you don't come across every day. That reality check was years in the making and paid by Frontier's well-rested-on and frankly dried-up laurels. They had a competitive advantage and then just did nothing with it for basically a decade, and there are still CMDRs who won't pull their heads out of the sand.

TL;DR This has nothing to do with Starfield and was sort of predictable just from info CIG gave. Some time ago, CIG told us they were shifting focus in development, and for a while they would be implementing new gameplay features in SQ42 first and using SQ42 to test and refine things, _then_ they'd bring these features to the PU in much better forms than the basic first-draft versions that had been coming to the PU before. SQ42 is now feature-complete and is moving towards polishing, so now we're seeing that strategy pay off after a long drought in new PU functionality. This was going to happen eventually, and it just so happens that SQ42 hit feature-complete around now as opposed to 6 months ago or 6 months from now. There's also the fact that the last 12-16 months of SC has been very rough, with constant instability while CIG focused on the big infrastructure work. This was not a sustainable strategy so CIG are now pissing themselves trying to win back the lost goodwill from months of buggy patches and regular server crashing with not very much new coming online to keep people pushing through the bugs. Decision-makers responsible for this long painful march have acknowledged that it was a mistake to take the patience of their players for granted and are working to flip things around and bring more quality of life into players' hands to win them back. With SQ42 feature-complete and all of those goodies being able to be brought over to the PU at last, they've got a lot of ammunition to get players back on their side and they're not holding back with it. This is definitely a good thing, but not really in response to anything Bethesda's done. You'll notice that nothing I said had anything to do with Todd Howard's space game of a thousand loading screens. The two games are not in competition and offer very different experiences. If you like Starfield, that's absolutely fine and I hope you get thousands of hours of enjoyment out of it. But CIG isn't doing anything in reaction to Starfield. If anything Starfield is attracting more people to look at space games and CIG is scrambling to put on their best clothing and clean up the house to set a good first impression for Starfield players looking for more first-person space games. And, if that's what you meant, I'll agree that it's a good thing, but it sounded like you meant the opposite when I read the comment.

Bro nobody even talks starfield anymore and it has actually greatly helped Star citizen as people heard about the game with no loading screens. Starfield, like elite dangerous Odyssey before it, are the biggest advertisement and validators of everything cig has done

It’s incredible that people still give consideration to this scam. After over half a billion dollar stolen from backers, players are in absolute denial. New ships? Of course! Whatever brings them money. Instead of fixing the actual game. Edit: the amount of fanboys here it’s insane. If you want to play a broken game you’re free to do so, obviously. Just don’t try to convince other people in pouring their hard earned money in a project that will never see the light. Have fun!
