Actually, what Kenny said was, “SOMETIMES when you win, you actually hurt yourself because you think you’re doing things correctly.” And that qualifier ("sometimes") embodies a BIG difference, message-wise, compared to what you attributed as Kenny's statement. And, in my view...it's that oftentimes tendency to undervalue nuance that causes unjustifiable takes and perspectives to be framed. Omitting "Sometimes" where reiterating Kenny's opening statement imbued a very different...a critical difference...insofar as what seems credible as to what Kenny actually meant. Kenny in no way - and I'm convinced Kenny very deliberately attempted to make this clear - in no way was Kenny insinuating that winning always translates to self-inflicted harm...which is exactly what your inaccurate restatement of Kenny's remark reflected. [I have to say...it bothers me how easily someone can find something they say being misquoted or misrepresented - and sometimes (not to say so in your case) misquoted intentionally, when repeated by others, that often leads to that someone having to defend something they never actually said or did in the first place.]

The main problem imo is that failure has such a strong, negative connotation behind it. Failure is 100% steps toward success, but it is still failure. If you expect to have a promotion this year but it's given to someone else, then you failed at getting that promotion (and that's completely fine). If you don't expect to be promoted but you work toward being better at your job and ultimately a promotion, you're not a failure because you didn't get that promotion. Giannis failed last year AND THAT'S OKAY, because failure is a step towards success in the future.

Giannis not viewing this season as a failure is why he’ll never be a top 5 player. His mindset is what sets him apart from a guy like Jordan. If Jordan was this softies teammate he would have demanded he would be traded. Jordan would’ve said he was a failure the other 9 years.

Great commentary. As a psychologist who only works with veterans, many who come to my office think similarly to Shaq, but they feel ashamed for the failure. We distinguish between a failed goal vs. a failed person in therapy all the time, as well as the definition of success. @@buttman7830 Define failure. If Giannis at the start of his pro career had a goal of winning one ring, who are you to say he’s a failure when he’s achieved his goal? So because Michael Jordan didn’t win a ring every season he failed many times. By your logic anything less than 100% success 100% of the time is a failure... do you understand how absurd that is?

As a Suns fan, who has despised Giannis for beating us in the finals, this answer from Giannis and the maturity he showed made me have so much more respect for him. Easier to like an opponent when they show such weakness, I hated MJ and Lebron because they were unrelenting and a threat but I respect them now because I appreciate the work they put in. The comments and sentiment Giannis made is actually not that uncommon to think. Every time someone asks, "Is this player a failure for every season they didn't win?" and the overwhelming majority say, "No." because of course they're not. Of course, we're always talking in retrospect of a player's career. I'm sure people in 1991 were skeptical and critical of Jordan's career as a winner when he hasn't won yet and is finally in the Finals against the Lakers against a team that has proven winners and Magic and Kareem had won all of their titles to that point. But seeing MJ's career from 2003 onwards makes it obvious it wasn't a failure. He's called by the majority of fans even today as the GOAT. This season by Giannis and the Bucks was for SURE a failure, they're the no. 1 seed and lost to an 8th seed lol. That just doesn't happen often. But, when Giannis retires, I'm sure that season won't even matter, he'll have multiple titles to his name.

Your victory is never guaranteed, every team has a chance regardless of how small or big it might seem. They all tried their very best and unfortunately it didn’t go their way. Thanks Ernie, Chuck, Kenny and Shaq and the whole TNT crew for bringing this up in a conversation many can learn from. Everything we experience in life, good or bad, win or lose should not be considered a failure but part of the process we can lean from to make us better human beings. So being the best you can be regardless of which strata of society you're at is every person's unique gift to the world. Thank you once again Ernie and crew!

I am so glad that Giannis' comments were the reason to ignite such an honest and profound talk about the concepts of "success" and "failure" in sports AND life. Something no other player has ever done. If people don't understand that there are lessons to be learned from an embarrassing loss even for the ones that think they have conquered it all (and he has!), then there is no progress and no stamina built into one's character. And that's a huge loss!

I think this really shows the difference in American vs European culture. I wasn’t until I started following European soccer and formula 1 that I understood that there’s more at stake than just being #1 all the time. These teams and clubs take pride and celebrate improving a place finish year over year. Americans tend to prioritize an all or nothing mentality when it comes to success, With no grace at all for measured success. It’s ALWAYS about improvement, and it’s not always reflecting in the stats and figures. An internal team’s success and growth is far more important than failing to finish #1 at the end of the season.

Not necessarily all or nothing...but in American culture the opportunity existed to "win" that didn't in any other culture on Earth at the time. Some of that bleeds thru to sports obviously.

I 100% agree with what Giannis and the crew said. His individuality isn’t a failure; the playoffs were. Saying the season was a failure negates the wins they accomplished. From nail biter games to completely destroying the other team. Saying the season is a failure because they didn’t win the championship is also a matter of perspective. Some people that play in the NBA just love basketball. They love the competitiveness of the sport while others truly want to be a force to be reckoned with and be the best player in the world. Then there is Giannis. I like to believe he’s a combination of both. He wants to be the best player in the world and wants to improve his game everyday while also genuinely having fun playing it. It’s all about perspective and given Giannis’s background and how he came to be; he’s far from a failure. Does he want another ring? Absolutely but as long as he kept the perspective of some days are good and others are bad he remains grounded to reality and is being humble. Kobe, Jordan, Chamberlain, Shaq and James all have had bad games so what did they do? Perfected their craft and it shows. Giannis is perfecting his craft but it seems nobody is giving him the credit where it’s due. I promise you he will have another championship.

I am so thankful to have heard this discussion. This is the kind of stuff that can change people's lives. I, personally, now feel reinvigorated to try hard to accomplish my goals. Something I've always said, but haven't been applying to my own life lately is, "It is better to try your hardest and fail, than to never try at all." Thank you, Inside Crew (and especially Giannis) for reminding me to keep trying.

Many people hear or use the word failure and it sticks with them, and dictates how they act in the future. The reason Giannis conversation is so profound, is because he is talking about how to not let the label "failure" stick with you, instead it is simply another step forward on the path.

THANK YOU! I was impressed when Giannis originally made his comments, and even more impressed when you dedicated a segment to dive deeper into the topic. So many people only pay lip service to the notion of sports teaching valuable life lessons, but then quickly fall into the trap of a shallow, championship-centric understanding of life. Kudos to Giannis and NBA on TNT for taking a moment to question commonly-held beliefs, and for encouraging people to think a little more critically.

look we can be philosophical all we want....lets call a spade a spade. the bucks were the number 1 team. best record. (probably) the mvp player on their team. going up against the 8 seed. and getting ran out playoffs first round only winning 1 game. this isn't that deep. they didn't reach their goal by a LONGSHOT. aka a failure. doesn't mean it has to define their next season.
@sirrebral

@@yadig876 In the modern era, the team with the NBA's best overall record statistically only has a coin-flip's chance of winning the title. That's still better than every other team, but it underscores Giannis' point: in any game, series, or season there are no guarantees of success in sports no matter how good you are; success is putting yourself in a position to win, and learning from mistakes by making adjustments.
