It was so brave of them to not switch to “edgy” or “girl-crush” since that’s what’s captivating the west, but instead they paid homage to their sheer pop roots.

I really like the feels. I would prefer TWICE debut with something that is uniquely them instead of pandering to a fickle US audience. TWICE is bright and happy and that will stand out against the current trend of antisocial pop music. At the end of the day they have nothing to prove to anyone. I am just glad they released a song they really seem to like.

I thought Twice's new sound was moving towards something mature? How is this more them than Cry For Me or ICSM? This song is just further evidence JYPE have no idea what they're doing as they once again pick the wrong song for the wrong markets. People praising JYPE for putting out a bright kpop song as their English debut which is never going to resonate in the US, when they've been putting out mature songs for Korean comebacks for the good part of two years, make minimal sense. We'll waste all these great mature songs (that the members also liked) that western kpop fans love the most by promoting it in South Korea, a market which does not like this sound for Twice. But the bright kpop sound that they are loved for in South Korea, we'll go back to it and sing it in English for some reason and promote it in the west, a market that will not care for it and for the portion of the fans that prefer their mature sound. In the end you've ended up with a song that will not do well in the west or expand their fanbase at any relevant level as it's not a sound they'll like, its only appeal being to western kpop fans who don't care about songs being Korean, and a song that will not to well in South Korea as it's in English. So what will it achieve outside of there maybe being enough fans mass buying multiple digital copies to chart on Billboard for one week maybe? These fans that will get them to maybe chart are already fans of the group and don't care if they sing in English or not. JYPE give the group no chance.

It's 2012-2016 all over again. 2019-2024 are anxious transition years, our gen 2.5 and early 3rd gen groups are not as active anymore and have incomplete line ups, while our mid and late 3rd gen have the looming presence of a dead end on their heads. • Apink is incomplete, • Block B is gone, • BTOB is incomplete, • AOA was murdered, • Exo are already legends of the past, • EXID left. 2020 was a weirdly comfortable bubble year because it's supposed to be the deadline for 2013 groups and, well, there aren't any, BTS is literally the only surviving 2013 group and they renewed beforehand. • GOT7 and Mamamoo live as kinda active, kinda complete seniors, • Seventeen and Winner blessed our hearts by renewing, • GFriend were our first lost. It's honestly going better than I expected but the bulk of 3rd gen debuted in 2015-17 which is why these next 3 years will be the death of me. Edit: Is anyone else weirded out by absolutely nothing having been said about Red Velvet contracts? Did SM find a loophole (EXO-like), to make them sign for 10 years?

It's a transitional period where fourth gen groups are still evolving as groups, and third gen groups are slowly disbanding. I became a stan roughly 6 months ago, and all of the groups that I'm liking are either disbanded or they're going to disband soon (probably). You're right, it is a really weird time to become a stan

Since re-signing we've had kcon, a concert and 2 albums. RBW has them locked in for another 3 years, so it would be dumb not to make the most of that time....but then again the last 3 group albums sold around 430k total, meanwhile the solo's sold around 340k total so not that much different, and they are only sharing income with 1 member 😭😭

That's interesting cuz the way I see it is that idols are pop musicians. They sell music. From a marketing standpoint, it's great to try and venture into new markets to widen your audience and to do that you need to cater to that audience enough for them to turn their heads to you. That's why although people bash on bts English songs I find it super smart cuz their goal wasn't to satisfy kpop fans it was to steal non kpop fans' attention. Not because these groups want "western validation" but because the western industry happens to be the gateway to the entire world to listen. THIS, this is exactly what I thought while watching the mv: “This is the most kpop thing I’ve seen in my life.” I wasn’t expecting them to reinvent the wheel, but this is stupidly twice. And I just didn’t know how to feel about it. It feeds into every single stereotype of what female kpop is and I didn’t know if that was what I wanted bigger audiences to see, a ‘confirmation’ that everything within the genre sounds the same. But at the same time… it’s just SO them. It’s Twice, but in English. It’s coherent with their discography and it’s not trying to make Twice into something they’re not just to appeal more to the west. They’re unapologetically true to themselves and honestly, good for them. They’re not feeding into what tiktok wants music to sound like now, or so heavily influenced by fourth gen that it alters their sound beyond recognition. If people like them, it will at least be for THEM, not for an image constructed solely for the west that doesn’t actually represent the girls, so I don’t care how this release does in America, I’m just proud to be a once

Yes! I thought it sounded like kpop in English, even the lyrics. It didn't sound like a pop song that twice sang, it sounds like a twice song in English, which I think is what it should be. It is very twice, and the people who think all kpop sounds the same are probably the same people who will never give it a chance regardless.

okay this literally perfectly summed up everything I wanted to say about this comeback. It's so good, the minute it opened I loved it and its so undeniably Twice, thats its charm. But at the same time, I'm worried that as an 'English' song it plays into this idea that this is all kpop is. A lot of the criticism i've heard from kpop are about how its nonsensical and 'the same' and i'm worried that a western audience might feel thks is just another one of those instances. For general kpop listeners and onces this song is a solid Twice song, but for the western audiences its another kpop song.

I feel like "The Feels" isn't as much of an attempt to cater to a new audience as much as it is a representation of who Twice is. I get your point. This definitely sounds like Twice, but listen to the bass. That's funk, a western style. Bass is barely noticeable in the old songs and suddenly you have it shining in "The Feels". If I had to say when Twice truly became veterans, it would have to be Feel Special; that song and album just oozed "we've made it" energy, when Twice went from a soda pop (or a candy pop) to a bottle of champagne. Removing the Special from Feel Special just gives us... The Feels, which feels firmly right before that coming of age. Fits perfectly with the prom concept, and it feels like a throwback to that middle stage of Twice, the What is Love? and Yes or Yes stage of Twice. My reaction to this song was very much "oh... Twice has a new song?" The English market isn't where I'd really expect Twice to go, always felt like Itzy was more JYPs answer to that market? Then the chorus came in with Jihyo's "Lightning straight to my heart!" and my reaction shifted to "wait... this is TWICE! I LOVE TWICE!" It feels like Twice, and forget sacrificing anything in this transition to English, it actually feels like amplified Twice! I love it! I kind of doubt they'll be able to break into the western market but I'd love to see them try! The west might not latch onto Twice, but if they latch onto this song, they'll be getting the perfect taste of unfiltered Twice, rather than watering them down to cater to the west. It's so bright and bouncy and indescribably Twice and I've been looping it since it came out. Twice also has another full album coming out and the thought of that is boggling - they already have an entire Japanese album and Korean mini this year, now there's an English debut, new album, new tour, so much Twice! Hopefully it isn't too much Twice, both for the girls sake and ours - The Feels still has that Twice magic and I don't want any of that to lose its shine through oversaturation or overworking.

Also I was kinda expecting how this song would do on the charts but scoring a 5stars from NME and highest debut on iTunes and most #1s is amazing especially with their 1st ENGLISH single. When they released the announcement, I was honestly really afraid they would make a song so focused on pleasing the American audience that it wouldn't feel like a Twice song. But once again, Twice proves that they are loyal to their true colours, reinventing themselves over and over and doing it flawlessly. If we think of it, Twice has dropped Kura Kura, Alcohol-Free, Perfect World and now The Feels in 2021. 4 massive bops along with two absolutely wonderful albums. But none of them feel repetitive or forced, they feel right. Twice did a song that Americans can relate to, but they didn't forget who they are and where they come from and I think that's something so unique to Twice: whenever you switch on a Twice song, you'll always know it's a Twice song. And maybe that's why The Feels doesn't completely feel like a debut song but a solidification statement, I love this however as, in the end, they are a 6-year-old kpop group that is now looking to expand their legacy after being one of the most successful groups ever. They are showing the world that Twice isn't done yet, that they have so so many more to show and they'll continue to prove it in the way they best do: with massive bops and a message of happiness, hope and love.

I feel like im listening to old school twice again and as a person who fell in love with twice for their cuter music, this song just feels like such a matured version of everything twice has been doing for years, the school girl aesthetic mixed with the cheer team look, the plaid. Everything feels like twice maturing their cuter concept and thrusting it at the west. I love twice and i love the feels. However, i feel that the feels fits kpop much better like you said. It makes me happy seeing twice being twice, and i really hope people love them for this version of them! Also speaking of iowa, i just remembered my mum talking about her colleague from iowa who said iowa has more pigs than people. If twice can get piggy stans, they’ve won iowa🥴🥴🥴(bad joke but i love the girls and i wish them the absolute best)

This song is a bop for me but I'm honestly more happy that all the members look like they're having a blast with this song. The pitch is FINALLY suitable for all of the members, the concept fits all of the members' voices, and they just look so comfortable in the MV. The only major problem I have is that Jeongyeon's voice was clear perfection for this song but either her condition right now prevented her from really popping off or JYP sucks, but the lines she does have are so tasteful and delicious. Hope she gets better on her own pace and has her time to shine in Twice's future songs like in Yes or Yes.

It's interesting comparing this to BlackPink, because I feel like this is the opposite in every way. In concept, obviously, but also BlackPink is so focused on the members as individuals, and this song is such a group effort. I feel like everyone shines, there are standout moments for every single member, but Twice feels more like a group while BP sometimes feel like a collection of solo artists. I'm curious to see what kind of reaction that will cause. Blinks are notorious for having lots of solo stans, which isn't necessarily a bad thing-- if all the members have really strong individual appeals, you can get 4× the fans who will show up to see the one they like. And of course, if you stick around for long enough you're bound to like everyone eventually. But there's no way anyone can do that with The Feels. Everyone was charming, but everyone didn't show off individual charms, you know? It feels much more k-pop in that way-- the girls give themselves to the concept, rather than being a lose collection of similar concepts. Edit: I know y'all aren't starting fanwars in the replies... I should have known better than to mention Twice and BP in the same sentence smh anyways stan both of them and quit fighting, this comparison is for the sake of analyzing market strategies not saying one is better than the other.

Well obviously Twice is different from Blackpink. Both of the groups were marketed in opposite ways. It has been almost 7 years since Twice's debut yet none of the members have a solo yet. If your wondering why it is so then its because JYPE doesn't twice to face the problem what their previous gg(miss a) had faced ie a single member getting all the recognition while the others live in her shadow. Everyone recognised Suzy but few knew about Miss A. I'm not blaming suzy its just that sk took great interest in her and on top of that she got sponsorships and acting gigs left and right. Jype is playing safe and is afraid that if they permit the members to do solo activities, some of them will become even more popular then the whole group in general. Blackpink didn't really start their solo activities till 2019 when they gained major fame and followers. Not only bp, but you'll see that every yg group has members who are individually famous in sk and internationally too.

The reason why I think they hit the nail in the head for an english debut is exactly because it sounds like Twice. You want people to enjoy the group and their music, not for them to like the one english song and be disappointed that the rest doesn't sound the same. This is how you built an audience, instead of creating a one hit wonder. There's also the fact that onces will like the song too, it won't feel like they're compromising their sound. Yes or Yes is considered an older release now? I remember when Likey came out. But I agree, The Feels really does remind me of early TWICE, especially their early Japanese releases. It’s super energetic and unapologetically cute, and even with that they’re still playing into a more mature Yes or Yes kind of cute than a Cheer Up or Knock Knock sound. It’s part of the reason that I listen to TWICE’s Japanese releases when I barely listen to Japanese releases from other groups, they tailor their concept to the market but they never change the core of their identity as a group.

The last 20 seconds literally made me cry. I really appreciate kpop artists making songs in English, believe me it's really great that they are making something for general public and fans who can understand English, but the main issue is English is not their first language so they might not able to convey their emotion that well than they can in their own language. Sometimes the english songs sounds unfamiliar, different from how the group or artist sound normally. I appreciate that they are taking risk. But I fell for kpop for it's distinctive Pop feel. The pop that makes them so different and special. Kpop is special and is really different than general pop songs. And I feel these days there is a heavy amount of westernization in kpop and it makes me sad that the kpop is missing. And that's why I love Twice so much. Cause Twice is not afraid of that distinctive pop song, they to this date have that kpop sound and I love it.

I've been with Twice since the beginning, and I definitely agree that this feels like more of a step back in time to their Cheer Up-esqe era. (But not a step back in quality mind you) But I'm also wondering if they did this deliberately to be more "palatable" like you said. Maybe they'll follow the same "growth" curve they did in Korea and Japan, and do more mature concepts later if this takes off. When you break into the American market, you want to show the strenghts of what makes K-pop K-POP while at the same time not making it too..... culturally different, so I think it's important to strike a balance between familiar (palatable) and exotic (not boring). I think this was a good effort from the writers and Twice themselves: They showed off a lot of the styles and charms Twice are known for, they got the rapping and vocals down, and they really showed how Twice (and k-pop in general) is really good at making catchy Choreographies that you just want to do yourself when you listen to the song. I guess time will tell if it was "enough" to get a significant boost in western fans (/album sales), but it's a cool direction to go. And I also think/hope it might be a bit of a slow boil situation; the Feels was an introduction, but they might do more to really solidify their place in the American market. And - sorry to bring this up - if some members decide to not renew their contracts next year, they've still had an AMAZING run, with practically non-stop work for 7 years (close to 30 title tracks). How ever this goes, this was great, and I'm constantly impressed how Twice just keeps getting better and better, it doesn't seem scientifically possible, and yet it happens. Anyway, end of Essay comment. Great video like always Mera!

I LOVE how the feels sounds like twice bc that just means twice has cemented their sound in pop culture. even when it’s fully english, you can still hear twice’s signature all over it. i also love how they paid homage to the generally american concept of “prom” bc it is an english song, but they still added the twice twist and made it their own. this is definitely a masterclass for other k-pop groups on how to enter the western market without straying from your established identity.

The song I think is a good balance between their bright, cute concept and western teen pop. I don't think they'll break the Western charts as much as BTS or BLACKPINK since their international fandom is nowhere near as massive. But I also like how they stick to their roots and still have that Twice signature and I hope Western audiences and non-kpop fans see the charm in that. I'm not a fan when other kpop groups come out with an English release and it almost feels like a "How do you do, fellow [Americans]" bc its incredibly generic and superficial to the point it feels disingenuous. I don't think there's anything wrong with kpop trying to break into the West but it'll good to acknowledge that kpop developed such a huge cult following for a reason- because they have a specific appeal that American pop doesn't- and they shouldn't feel pressured to abandon that to try and appease international listeners because it'll only end up being washed away by its actual American competitors.

As a general listener of Twice, this song is the definition of Twice as a whole. Cute and bubbly, it really fits them and they nailed it. But I'm not a once, so obviously I've got some things to say. Generally speaking, if they are targeting the international audience/american audience, I think they should have gone for songs like icsm, cfm, m&m, feel special etc because they are the type of songs that everyone likes regardless of the language. This song feels more appropriate for korean and japanese markets imo. From the teaser itself, i kinda guessed it that they were going back to their old roots. As we all know, sk likes twice for their cute and sugary sweet songs while we international fans are a bit more interested in their "mature concepts". I'm not saying that I'm against their more girly side, hell at one point i was obsessed with 'shy shy shy' and 'TT' and fancy is my all time favourite songs. Twice got their fame and power through these songs. Jype is playing safe and i feel like they want twice to be "like twice" for their english debut which is not a bad thing at all. It was my thought as a general listener so i hope no one gets triggered.

That's the thing about Twice,I don't think they were trying to "fit" american pop, I think they went to the "Hi, my name is Twice" type of debut for America. I saw lots of ppl saying The Feels doesn't fit american pop, but it fits kpop and thats what Twice is, they are proudly considered the most successful girl group of kpop even if they aren't the most famous worldwide. They did what they do, Twice music. The fact this was a release english probrably was the way they decided to introduce their own music and sound to the international audience that aren't familiar with korea. It's an english song, but it is kpop, and it sounds exactly like the Twice we have known so far and I am so proud of them for it. Kpop groups should be proud of who they are, of the sound they have, of what they did till now. They shouldn't change their essence for the american market and so far, Twice is the only group that made an american debut that kept their "roots" without appealing to an apop-like genre (except maybe SuperM who also debuted in america, but im not sure cause SuperM didn't exactly debuted with an english song)

I really like this song and how it sounds so much like Twice and is less trying to appeal to the west. Watching the MV for the first time, I thought to myself, "This is the most K-pop sounding English song I've ever heard." I also think they were in a tough spot because we already have a mainstream K-pop girl group. If they released something too dark, they might just be labeled as Blackpink 2.0 by western fans, but this song gives them something that sets them apart from other groups in the west. My favorite thing about Twice has always been their personalities and how genuine they seem, and even though at this point I'm convinced there isn't a concept they can't do, I'm glad they aren't putting on a facade just to appeal to the west and stayed true to themselves. a bop. not gonna say anything bad about the song itself cuz it’s flawless for me. the only thing that bugs me is the awkwardness of many moves in the choreography. there’s also no key dance move which they have been doing since debut. idk, just my opinion

As a very casual listener, i really like this song! I didn’t even know this was going to be an English single. I just liked the beat, their voices. Interestingly, I’m so sick of the retro trend but this works well. It’s electric.

i missed their bubbly concept so much so i haven’t stopped streaming this one. i loved the video, it reminded me of brand new girl but more mature. i love the retro vibe songs they’ve been doing recently

Yeah, it's cool because it gives so many hints to previous twice mvs that it also feels like a "hey, look at this, *this* is what you've been missing out on" and musically it's like the perfect combination between old twice and current twice

I feel very whelmed by this song. I'm not disappointed and I'm not super blown away. I want to see how this song does commercially because Western audience aren't going to go crazy for it and because it's in English their Korean and Japanese fanbase won't be as avid as they are for Korean and Japanese releases.

We'll have to see what happens in Korea and Japan but I don't think the language barrier is really an issue since BTS' English releases have done well there(especially in Japan). And The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber's "Stay" is currently number 1 in Korea.

I think it was really smart for them to do a disco-pop song especially since that's the route that BTS has been taking recently with their English songs and they've been everywhere here. Obviously, Twice is not as known as BTS in the US for mainstream listeners but it's still true to their vibe while also being experimental for them since it's in English.

I think this was pretty much the best case scenario we could've hoped for. Most groups water down their appeal for a western market and seem to be almost ashamed of being a KPop group to begin with, and that's a terrible way to introduce new audiences to the genre. There's also the risk of losing your core fandom on the way, like how there's an entire vocal group of (former) ARMYs who still love their older releases but have given up on the group in various degrees otherwise. TWICE did none of that here. If someone listens to this song and likes it, chances are that person will enjoy their Korean songs too. The entire song and video scream "we're KPop and proud of it". It might not have the same western mainstream appeal as other English singles we got so far, but it feels like a much healthier release to make in the long run. I like KPop, not Western pop music, and I'd hate to see it lose what makes it special to appeal to a foreign market.

I stanned TWICE because their music is not edgy/girl crushy type, I'm not into those type of genre, I'm very glad that they did not change their genre to cater western market instead they chose to stay on their roots. I really love *TWICE POP* 🤧

I feel like The Feels as a debut is actually a wise decision because a debut is supposed to be an introduction. Twice just started to introduce their real selves, the twice that people love and know of. They'll probably go for something different for their next step in the US, and as what Mera said TWICE has always been a slow burn. And honestly that's one of the things I love about them, they were never the "trying hard" type but more like "if you like us then stay and see what other things we can offer". TWICE is so TWICE. Real and Honest.
