A video on youtubes compression of sound? I have people yell at me constantly that "1080P sound is the same as 144p, sound dosnt go by video standards" Id love a video to show them what youtube does, and why it sounds different. Love- an audio engineer.

Fun fact: the acoustics in my house are so weird that sounds always seem to come from the other side of the hallway than where they actually are. Also the people in the kitchen can talk to the people in the bedroom, but not the other way around...

So is that how stereo works? Just by delaying one earphone's sound a slight bit? I thought it would have had to do with just volumes between the 2 ears.

how do we pinpoint stuff in the room ( lets say, another person) or know it is there by 'listening' the pressure? how does that actually work? dunno if you get what im saying or if lot of people have this but I sometimes can sense people in a room eventhough I cannot see them but somehow the pressure in my ears change. its a same thing with someone standing behind me quietly. I can sort of sense he/she is there and if he/she is on left or right side.

But how do we know when the sound comes from directly above us? In which case, the sound travels to both of the ears at the same time and has equal loudness on both of the ears...

I was worried that he wouldn't explain this and I haven't even watched the full video yet :) basically it's not an easy explanation (hence why it's not in this video). Normally all frequencies in a sound hit your ear at around the same time. This means all frequencies are "in phase". The ear lobes/pinna allow some of the frequencies to be delayed (via a slightly longer path) or absorbed (via cancelling as these delayed versions interact with the direct versions) which causes some of the sine waves in the sound to be heard later than the rest of the sound (no longer in phase). This is one of the reasons why low frequencies and sounds with basic timbre (like sine waves) to be hard to pin point directionally (unless they have a repetitive element to them under a certain frequency.) What this actually means is that we train ourselves from an early age to know what these "filters" sound like from all different angles and then instinctively know where the sound is coming from. This is also why animals with simple ears like cats have to turn their heads (and ears) a lot to get the same detail of location. :) This is a vast simplification still but a few wiki searches would help you! :)

So I suppose the left-to-right distinction comes instinctively but the other two axes take time to learn while your brain develops since there's no way for your brain to know exactly how your earflaps are going to filter the incoming sound. Or is that also encoded in your genes?

Why do binaural sounds not work for in front of you? They work well behind but every time a sound is supposed to be in front of you, it appears behind.

It doesn't actually work for everyone, a lot of people do hear everything behind them for some reason.

that's because everybody's ears (and heads and hairdos) are shaped differently, so that the perceived sound of something "in front of you" slightly differs from person to person. the headphones you use and their frequency response play a part in that as well.

Because you hear your voice through the bones in your skull in addition to the sound waves in the air. That additional frequency in the bones is lower, so we think our voice is lower than it really is (to other people) and fuller, so when it loses the part that we hear, it sounds hollower and higher. You can isolate the part only you hear by plugging your ears with earplugs or your fingers and talking, then remove the earplugs and repeat what you said, then you can mentally subtract what only you hear and that's what you sound like.
