Episode 3 of In Search of Giants: Dr Brian Cox takes us on a journey through the history of particle physics. In this episode we learn how Ernest Rutherford conducted a historical experiment that revealed that most of the mass of an atom is concentrated in a tiny nucleus made of protons and neutrons.
This film is part of a series originally broadcast on Teachers' TV (www.teachers.tv....
The series was made with the support of The Science and Technology Facilities Council (www.scitech.ac.uk).

Question! What kind of device did they use to fire and distinquish the alpha particles? and similarly, what kind of devide were used to first split the atom? (i know the technical term is fission and it was caused by firing a neutron at a uranium atom, but my question is how could they deliberately fire a neutron and aim it at a target uranium atom?)

Is it true only protons have real mass. Neutron and electrons are hollow spheres. Is it true that neutrons spin twice faster than that of electrons. Just like the nucleus has a huge gap between electrons and nucleus of the atom. Ultimately something has to be hollow.

i'm obviously missing something! why do all replica's of Rutherford's alpha particle (helium nuclei) experiments only show particles aimed through a thin barrier material towards a detector located horizontal to the source? I believed most helium particles would be sent up the way in air unless they hit something on route - making more sense to have the detector above the radiation source outlet pointing up the way! - Otherwise good experiment.

as above, it is nothing to do with antimatter. If antimatter and matter were annihilating (NOT COMBINING), a huge amount of energy would be released. the distance between is comprised of empty space. That is, a vacuum. There are no detectable particles. It is as simple as that. (of course, this is not the full picture due to electrons having wave-particle duality, but this is a detail best left to actual physicists)

an alpha particle is a combination of two protons and two neutrons that are ejected from the nucleus of a radioactive atom. alpha radiation is the most dangerous to your health if injested because its very ionising(i.e can make healthy cells become cancerous). the good thing is that it's not very penetrative. (can't get through skin and can only travel 5cm through air.)

- also what about entanglement (particles bumping around with each other after defecting off nuclei within the material encasing the radiation source) oh what happens if the source material is removed or the barrier material removed? I can't find examples anywhere hmmm!
