How did we discover brain cells? How do we know that they communicate electrically? Learn how three scientists transformed our understanding of neurons and the brain.
This is a test video from my Cognitive Neuroscience course.

I took a course in philosophy of mind, and in cognitive psychology. I also read and conversed a lot on the matter of mind and body duality/relation. I never even once heard about Hermann von Helmholtz argument against vitalism. Brilliant. It can be thought of in the sense of entropy as well.

is the debate between vitalism and hermann’s more materialist (idk if that’s the right word) point that nerve impuses can be studied scientifically similar to the debate of cold vs hot explanations? vitalism sounds more like a hot model and then hermann makes us sound more like cold calculators

One way it's similar is that vitalism is about an active force (like a motivational/"hot" theory), whereas Helmholtz wanted a more scientific, mechanistic explanation (like a cognitive/"cold" theory). But both 'hot' and 'cold' psychological theories follow Helmholtz's example, since they try to explain the mechanisms by which the mind works.
