Your chickens are happy for sure. I’m about to cull our last two roosters unless you’re sure you don’t want any? 😂 They took to beating up our 9 year old rooster named “One eyed Jack” yesterday and I’m pretty upset about it. He had a good run I guess. The weather has warmed up so everyone can get some fresh air now. Take care!

Our girls are loving the warm weather and are out free ranging again (in late January!) and are eating lots of grass. They are loving it. You can keep the roosters. Use them for soup during $50 February!! Cheers Annette!

Great information Rich! I agree on not spending extra money and doing extra work. And you have such happy chickens! The truth is the love you give them is what makes them happiest! Thanks for sharing Rich! 😊👍❤️

Giving them attention (and a small amount of corn) makes them happier than all the big $$ snacks. I agree with you. Thanks for stopping by Tammy! Have a great week!

I do wash, bake and grind up my eggshells but not for the chickens, I add it to my garden beds and I do that because it takes 3 years for the eggshell to break down in the soil if you just throw the shells in there. 🤷‍♀️ I don't do it all year long, just a few months out of the year.

I've heard of people doing this for tomato gardens. They love the calcium. I just don't understand the time spent to do this for chickens. Lots of time and work. Hope you're staying warm and out of the snow. Cheers!

@@TheOldSwedesFarm Yes, we don't have much snow and it's a balmy 33 degrees right now. Not much of a winter for sure.

Great video. I have basically cloned your setup at my farm. This is my first attempt at chickens and so far very fun. I have 6 adults and 10 chicks also from Hoovers. I live like 20 miles from them! Simple is good and you have simplicity mastered.

I initially subscribed after watching one of ur old videos where u had about 60 hens, i was already wondering what happened to them. Why did you downsize and do u have other plans for the coop now? just asking because it seems quite big for 8 ladys 😂

At our peak, we had 88 chickens. We wanted to build a business on the Farm. We had egg sales, a CSA from the garden and further vegetable sales. Last summer we had a large storm and it knocked out our garden in 20 minutes. Almost completely gone. We decided that all the work with the garden (and the chickens) made some money, but not enough. In the end, it's easier to have a 9 to 5 and keep the farm as a hobby. We've downsized and plan to have enough crops to support us for an entire year plus chickens to provide eggs for us (and some to sell to cover their food costs). The work level on the farm, and the stress level, will be lower. Hope this all makes sense. The hens will have a nice big place to live, and we have room in case we decide to expand at any point.

@@TheOldSwedesFarm Thank you for the aswer.I am sorry to hear that..must have been devastating to see all your hard work destroyed. I am really sorry..i watched some of your gardening videos and saw of course how much work you and your wife put into this :/ It makes perfect sense..we bought a farm two years ago, sheep, chickens and a somewhat chaotic permaculture were already here. For us it was clear that we could never life of it, the amount of work that goes into projects like this is insane. For us the main goal is to feed ourselves as much as possible from our garden and the animals, but still it's hard work...I wish you and your family all the best! I really like your approach in keeping things simple and your calm manner. Also i really like your coop :) Keep up the videos, i'll keep watching :)

@@nelladaren3915 Thanks for the wishes. It was so disheartening to watch the garden get destroyed. About all we had left were some peppers and some squash. We're going to just grow for ourselves, like you. Still a LOT of work. Take care and thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers!

Your girls have a really nice life. I wish I could free range mine, but I have a dog that would love to catch them. I have a good size coop with 10 x 13 run attached. Next summer I plan on expanding the run area.

A good run is awesome. Any time they can be outside and moving about will help them. We don't have a dog so don't have that issue. Keep us posted on your progress on the run. Cheers!

Hi 👋 I like that you still have snow,here has melted as 2 days in a row we had positive temperatures during the day.How much does it cost to buy 1 day old laying hens?
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
The cost is different per breed but it's usually $2.99 - $4.99. I am guessing we'll have plenty of snow this winter. It's just waiting for March to arrive! Thanks for stopping by! Cheers!

How did you downsize for over 80 birds to 8? Looking for ideas as we prefer not to keep them over the 2 ish years old.
@TheOldSwedesFarm

We put an ad on Craigslist and sold then for $20 each. I screened everyone before selling. I didn't want our hens going to anyone who would mistreat them or not care for them correctly. Someone contacted me because they had lost all their bords to a raccoon. I asked if they had made any security changes......no. Those people didn't get any of the hens. We managed to sell 80 hens to people who would take care of them. We still get pictures of the hens at the new homes. Eight hens are a LOT less work and we still get enough eggs for us (and a few extra to pay for their food). Hope this makes sense.

I filmed this yesterday (late January) and we got eight eggs! They lay all year around, here in MN. We do supplement their light but nothing else. The ISA's and Rocks are egg machines!!

Hi I’m loving your channel I just found you guys yesterday! I do have a question on one of your videos you said you had sapphire splash chickens I looked at Hoovers Hatchery and they don’t have chickens by that name. Is the name different at the hatchery?

It's been a couple years but we got our Splash from Hoover's. That's where we've gotten all our chicks from. Contact them and ask if it's something they will get in. Maybe they are out right now. sorry, not being much help. Thanks for joining us Angel!

Do you eat your chickens
@TheOldSwedesFarm
@TheOldSwedesFarm Жыл бұрын
We do not. We just use them for eggs. When they get older, we sell them to people who do not need huge production. It's a win-win.

Thanks for not babying your chickens. They’re incredibly hardy! I’ve learned so much from leaving them alone vs babying them
