this channel is criminally undersubbed, you're videos are easily as good as the big names like minutephysics/minuteearth, or cgp grey. keep up the amazing work!

Heh, back when this channel was very young I was sure this *was* minuteearth. Mostly because Jesse and Henry have similar voices and I went from minuteearth to This Place without realizing I switched channels (was jumping through recommendations and the channels are somewhat similar). Anyway I didn't realize my mistake until I tried to find and rewatch the Grand Banks Cod video and realized it is nowhere to be found on minuteearth.

I think the old minuteearth videos were similar in quality and content to those of this channel, but IMO the newer ones simply lack quality... especially that take on infaticide by minuteearth was just a mess.

This is really fantastic and you've put to paper (or video) a lot of ideas that I've had stewing in my head. I love that you have a reasonable degree of academic rigor ( at least for popular science videos) but that you never come across as aloof and rarely come across as preachy. The fusion of science and philosophy is exactly what we need right now. Keep up the good work!

another great one. I love your channel! I guess it would make sense to make all your videos in in a second, less fast and funny but slower and more sober. That could turn out to have more educational value. To think about the things you say takes time and not everybody's brain can follow these thoughts fast enough, let alone ponder on them.

To those who what to push someone to stop the train, why not you jump into the track yourself instead.

That is why the problem is typically presented as you (a normal weight person) pushing a fat person. In that situation you wouldn't be able to jump in front of the train yourself.

Skullhoof For that, its because quite simply put, the fat man is worth little to nothing to me. However i am worth alot to myself, hence it is better to push the fat man off than jump off myself. If the fat man was my relative that i saw him as greater value than myself, than i will just not push the man off and let the five people die. However, i am not even the guy who wants to push the fat man off. Realistically speaking, if i pushed the man off, i would be accused and sentenced to murder. I'd rather the 5 people die than facing the risk of my welfare. Because many people die all over the earth to many other causes, and this is one of them, like how some terrorists kills 100 over students in a single attack, people die. And as much as people like to be heroic, It is not smart to sacrifice yourself for 5 useless strangers. Since millions of others die every year. You saved like 0.00001% of the people that would have died in one year at the expense of your own life and all the years you have lived through.

Pushing the person is LESS ok than pulling the lever because there you could jump in front of the train yourself. You have a choice between sacrificing yourself and sacrificing another that you don't have in the lever instance. Yes, you are still sacrificing one life to save many, but rather than deciding that the lives of five strangers are more important than that of one, you're deciding that your life is more important than that of a stranger.
@EinsiJo
@EinsiJo 7 жыл бұрын
Also, no matter how you rationalize it, there is no way to be certain that a body on the tracks will slow the train down enough to save the rest of them, so you'd be adding one more fatality on a gamble you're probably not capable of understanding the odds of.
@MisterLepo

@TAKProject
@TAKProject 7 жыл бұрын
I think the point of the thought experiment is to have the person be super obese(or some other reason) to the point that they are the only one that could stop the train. Giving someone the option to throw themselves onto the tracks is not part of the thought experiment, however it would be an interesting to see the results of that modification.

EinsiJo oh my god why are people so stupid. Look dipshit I didn't think this was needed to be said but you can't fucking jump in front of the train. Did you not understand the video?! Either you pull the lever or don't, either you push them or don't. No other options you stupid piece of SHIT.
@dmoneyswagg64

EinsiJo you are a fucking moron. Do you not comprehend what a scenario is? It is 100% true that in this scenario that off you push the person the train will stop. All you keep FUCKING doing is over analyzing the scenario so you don't have to fucking answer it.

It's good and bad. Good because stuff like this NEEDs to be talked about, not to mention it's interesting. And bad because people love twisting others' words and even only hearing what they want. However I've noticed an increase in people who actually listen and use their brain, who will debate and not just yell at you and insult you. The rude internet-goers have decreased, at least where I've been on youtube, facebook, and tumblr. [facebook was especially bad]

While I've garnered my own perceptions of how to make choices such as these from a rather spiritually inclined book, I have to say they do align nicely with the points mentioned in this video. I suppose I am a believer in consequential reasoning, with the eye on perspectives in an altruistic light though. Meaning that I''m always trying to be aware of the fact that there are uncountable things I do not know and that when in doubt, I try to act on the basis of compassion and trust. So probably a combination of logical reasoning, past knowledge on differing perspectives on topics, a healthy dose of curiosity and ability to be wrong, with the gaps filled in by trust in the knowledge that what's actually best for me is what is also best for you. At least when looked at from a broad enough lens.
