Radio Four has trained us to be jarred by the potentially incorrect use of 'less'. But there are many, many words (the question is, are there a 'countable' number?) - so 'less words' is, for some, as valid as 'fewer words'. Language is changing and while 'less countries' is wrong, and 'fewer rice' is too, some nouns can be either fewer or less.
