You have to find your "Knack". Maybe a STEM degree is the right path, maybe learning a trade. Experiment. Do. Be open-minded. Write down all of the things you'd like to try and sort them by "Job" and "Hobby". Do several iterations. It's the advice I gave to my kids & they are doing well building lives for themselves. After clawing my way through High School Chemistry in my Junior Year of high school, I gave Physics a shot since it was the last science course offered; if that fell apart, "Scientist" would get scratched off my list. During my Senior Year, Mr. Nicks helped me *rediscover* Physics: I was all into gizmos and contraptions when I was a little kid. It was revolutionary to discover that a thing called a "Physics Major" existed! Out of all of the other possibilities I was considering, he collapsed my wave function and vectored me into Physics. It has served me well over the years; I work at the company he retired from before he taught High School. That was a while ago: "Against the Wind" by Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band was a hit. (We both have held-up pretty well!)

I’m exploring a possible switch to Computer Science and software engineering after taking a data analysis class last semester.

If life would have allowed it, I would have gone into Astrophysics and enjoyed that but it wouldn't have been a great fit. I ended up in IT, the discipline I'm pursuing didn't really exist when I started but I'm working toward cybersecurity and penetration testing. My job requires a degree so that decided my major. I was always testing systems, finding exploits and making programs do things they aren't supposed to. I can spend hours quietly focused on breaking something the way I want. I just gravitated to what I wanted to do but I picked up a lot of unique skills from multiple disciplines. I usually tell people dreams are great but having conversations with bill collectors sucks. A good major would be something you love where you can pay the bills.

I'm 39 now. Although not necessary whatsoever, I've found use of my Asian math skills doing x-ray and cat scan work for my local healthcare system. If I was actually super smart, I would have gone to be a doctor or radiation therapist (needs physics) to well, make a lot more money obviously, but that was not the case. In any event, I'm okay where I am at in life.

College is overpriced and the instruction is terrible. Especially if you’re going to get a math degree. College math instruction is mostly taught by graduate students who really don’t understand the material. Most math “instruction “ dotes on solving tricky problems that don’t elucidate concepts. At my university, the math instruction was so bad that the engineering department instituted their own math classes. Instead save thousands of dollars and do like Math Sorcerer and buy lots of used math textbooks. Here are some suggestions: Differential and Integral Calculus by Richard Courant. The four volume set on calculus by Edouard Goursat. A Course of Pure Mathematics by Godfrey Hardy

Whether judged by pedagogical, mathematical or expository standards, Richard Courant’s “Differential and Integral Calculus “ is a work of high perfection
