Thank you for the explanation, I am taking an advanced coding class online and when a question states find this ICD-10-CM code, I can do that or find this CPT code, I understand, but if I am given a LARGE chuck of information or a case and have to pick through it, to decide what info is needed where... I freeze up! I have to list the ICD-10-CM, PCS, CPT, Z-code, and POA. Any advice for inpatient coding... it's a lot of factors.

Yes. I teach my students after the principle diagnosis assign the rest of the codes based on resource allocations. In other words, the diagnoses that require the most attention.

Nikita Jones, the first diagnosis is the reason for the visit. If the signs and symptoms lead to a definitive diagnoses, code the definitive diagnoses instead of the signs and symptoms because it is understood that when you code the definitive diagnoses, you capture the signs and symptoms. If there are other conditions that have to also be treated, those need to be captured as well.

If pt is first evaluated as haiving PTSD, but and there is also major depressive disorder; which is coded first on a CMS100 claim sheet?
