Off-grid living is often shown as hippy, earth loving and uncomfortable. We have lived, like thousands of others, off-grid in Spain for many years. It's a 5 bed villa with swimming pool, air conditioning, dishwasher and all the mod-cons. True, we get more sun so electricity is abundant and water can't be wasted but it's all free and environmentally sound. Total bills are €120 per year council tax for which, we get the same services as you would in the UK.

I think the approach in Wales is good in some ways, especially if you want to live as far off grid as this family are doing, but it is also limiting. It only presents two ideas really, either you live like everyone else does pay your electricity and energy bills along with your mortgage/rent, pay council tax and have have your rubbish collected…..or you go totally off grid on agricultural land providing you can work than land enough to make £6000 a year. Where’s the inbetween? Why can’t I build a small house that has minimal enough electricity needs that solar panels can provide enough power, but still has mains water connected BUT no sewage so I treat my own sewage whilst still having a regular job without having to seek my earning off the land I live on rather being forced to live in a Barrett Homes style house where no consideration whatsoever is taken for the environment or energy requirements save for the bare minimum required by local planning rules.
@MissDoolally2 жыл бұрын
Because if they made it that easy, everyone would do it, and people would need to work less to afford to live and no one would be making the top 1% rich enough with their labour. It's not a coincidence that people only finish paying of their mortgage when they are close to retirement and no longer useful at work. Decisions made in politics are not to make our lives any easier, its to maximise the profits for the oligarchs. Everything wrong with this planet is being driven by greed. We already have the means to stop climate change but the rich will not give up exploitation no matter what the cost is to everyone else. Living is expensive on purpose.

I have a normal house, but I am just about off-grid, apart from the water. It is the 21st Century now, we should not be paying anyone for energy when the world is so awash with the stuff, the world is now behind technologically by about 40years and all because of greedy energy fat cats and their shareholders. Petrol and Diesel cars should have been phased out in the 1980s, viable batteries should have been produced years ago, the only reason we have EVs now is because of Mobile Phones and the need to make batteries with high energy densities to run them. But research into batteries never happened years ago because the Fat Cats were too busy enjoying the high life, eating Caviar and having sex with high-class hookers while they squandered all our futures away and killed the natural world with their greed.

@richardsandwell22855 жыл бұрын
@@snowflakemelter1172 Technology has been held back by the availability of fossil fuels combined with the greed of a minority that want to exploit and kill the planet for their own short term avaricious gain. I know that most houses could run totally off-grid costing their owners little to nothing, even in Winter in the UK we are awash with heat and energy. All these utility bills people are now getting into debt to pay because of inflation and low wages are mostly unnecessary. If people expected and demanded so much more from technology we would probably be ok. But the vast majority are scientifically illiterate, and the governments in the UK prefer most kids to leave School knowing little about science, they can always import a few scientists from abroad when required. But keeping our kids illiterate makes then easy slaves to the system of creating wealth for a tiny minority. The turning point for me came years ago about 1992 when I pretty much burned my foot on a hot paving slab one summer, I went back inside the house only to hear the burner ignite on my Baxi Bermuda gas boiler. My wife at the time had put it on to make hot water for a bath, today I no longer pay for hot water. In 2003 I built my own gravity solar thermal panel. Now I also have PVs for my electricity. Why should I pay to keep the greedy in luxury, when free power comes out of the sky.

If you want the off grid lifestyle then the US is the place to do it, lands dirt cheap over there compared to the UK. For an adequate piece of land for homesteading and living off the grid in the UK you're looking at a minimum of £700,000 starting price. You can get crap land for cheaper, but even the s**t lands a load more expensive than the US. That's not even considering the legislation for building on land which is far stricter in the UK. I've been wanting to do this for a while, but realistically I'd need to move out of the UK to do it

@fredgalaxy76323 жыл бұрын
Im happy to adapt my way of life to one ad such, if the government allows it. There are many restrictions and legislations in place which prevents or makes it complicated for people in the UK to live off the grid. The major cities in the UK will not support this choice of living. The Midlands, Black country and Wales are probably the few realistic locations to achieve a off grid lifestyle. Secondly, purchasing land in the UK is not viable for most people (unless you are a millionaire etc). So renting a football pitch sized green land with other off the grid enthusiasts is the most realistic option. In addition, building permission is required. Possession of cows, horses and any other agricultural animals will require licenses and approval by the council. But if you can find a community estate built on a section of a farm or greenery land, then thats properties which is most likely the best option in terms of saving costs for developing accommodation from the ground up. Just need to seek permission of the land owner for making adjustments and slight infrastructural projects. Such as building own water pumping system. Setting up solar panels for natural electricity. And getting permission for the use of outdoor fire facilities.

I think this is great, and would like to live similar to that some day (getting there), but I also think people need to be shown the more realistic side too and not just the good stuff. The daily routine would not be easy, and definately far from convenient/comfortable....all this for a measly £500/month. People say it'd be great to be without bills etc but they're extremely naive. Let's say you start heating your house with wood you chopped up and stored from your own forrest (convenient if you had a forest) - this may take the equivalent of an hours preparation etc each day for the sake of getting less than ideal heat in the home (peaks and lows of heat and constant supervision). So over the Winter that's 140 man-hours. If you were paid for this hard labour at just minimum wage (chopping, storing, building shelters, loading and lighting fire each day etc) you'd earn £1220! Compare that to natural gas which only costs £600-£700 per heating season for the average house - and all automatically and perfect temperature. In other words, to heat "for free" you'd be working for less than £4/hour on the so called "savings" of the gas bill. Bottom line, people in Britain are SPOILED and IGNORANT and they don't realise it. They then complain about the government or the council etc all the time when their own lives are comfortable enough, or they just need to work harder/appreciate what they already have.

But, the point is that doesn't matter. Your entire priorities change. If you don't work for an employer you have more time and energy to spend on tasks like chopping wood and also thinking up ideas to make self-sufficiency easier. It's more satisfying to sustain yourself. It's healthier to live a more active, outdoor life. You can create a heating system that suits your needs. Likewise, you can swap produce you grow and ideas and practical skills you have with neighbours, friends and family. There's no need to live the way we are used to - giving up most of our waking hours to employers to make other people rich and paying companies to meet our basic needs. We can do it ourselves, which is why the government isn't going to make it easy.

@@amandahunter4034 Hi Amanda, I resonate with your sentiments and admire the couple featured in the film, primarily due to their profound respect for life and unwavering integrity. While many of their choices may have arisen from past traumas and a desire to escape what they perceived as oppressive and unfulfilling lives, I believe they are presently leading lives marked by wisdom and purpose. However, it's vital to acknowledge a significant, often overlooked distinction. This division is not merely between "common individuals" and "those in authority." It fundamentally hinges on factors like being well-informed, industrious, and intelligent versus remaining uninformed, apathetic, entitled, and lacking in discernment. The former group may mistakenly assume that everyone shares their qualities, when in reality, a substantial portion of Britain's population fails to recognize and appreciate their current circumstances due to ignorance or lack of insight. For instance, some individuals on welfare receive equivalent income to those working full-time at minimum wage jobs, demanding significant dedication and time away from their families. Yet, they may still voice grievances about life, adopting a "woe is me" attitude and asserting an unwarranted entitlement to this financial support. They have no idea what it takes to earn a living, or the middle class trap. In contrast, the former group, transitioning from high-stress careers to a more idyllic existence, possesses the essential traits of resilience, work ethic, and a profound gratitude for life-a stark contrast to the latter group's disposition. Unfortunately, some individuals from the latter group may watch videos depicting such idyllic lives, nurturing fantasies and idealizing an existence that appears effortless and liberated from control, seemingly oblivious to the very system that sustains their livelihoods.
@paulstone7655 Жыл бұрын
@@amandahunter4034 I'd like to also emphasize that while this lifestyle can promote a more present and meaningful existence, it doesn't come with a guarantee of such an experience. Factors like isolation or the stress associated with meeting the targets and guidelines of an off-grid life can affect this. Moreover, I believe that what's truly missing in Western societies isn't solely an overreliance on centralized systems (as opposed to self-sufficiency) but rather a deficiency in community spirit. While it's true that being trapped in a high-pressure career 24/7 can hinder one's ability to engage with life's more essential aspects, leading a simpler life should also address the critical aspect of fostering connections with our fellow human beings.

No-one can be 'off grid' and certainly in a UK context most people - unfortunately - are deluding themselves. I had Great Grandparents who were 'off grid' in the true sense. They lived on a remote Scottish island, but they abandoned that life a century ago, when the islanders were evacuated. Life was incredibly hard and unrelenting and final break point was the lack of medical care and opportunites. It cannot be off-grid if you still reply on the NHS health service, on state education and also if your life depends on the modern world to supply your internet and tech needs, your clothes, your social care (which you may well need when you are older) and other paraphernalia of modern life. Short of literally cutting yourself off on an island, you are still linked by an 'umbilical chord' to modern life. If we all tried to achieve this the world would pretty quickly revert back to a medieval lifestyle. Not least in a British context and 68 million people - we would only have less than 1 acre of land each. In England it would be barely half an acre each.

Now there’s a thing when the white man cuts down the last tree and cooks the last fish he will realise you can’t eat money?

Racist moron. Who do you think is cutting down the rain forest or poaching the Elephants ?
@aliasofanalias74484 жыл бұрын
Don't confuse simple stereotypes with racism. This is why people have such a hang up about the word. Look into the definition of the word and ask yourself again if op's statement was racist. It was a stereotype. - a white man.

And yet the White man had to tell the brown and black man you can’t eat cow dung...

We all still need to do our best to minimize our environmental impact regardless of why the climate is changing.

@@charlestalks5638 Why is a change in climate a bad thing?
@AlanWattResistance5 жыл бұрын
@@firstnamett4656 Doesn't the climate always change? I imagine that major volcanic eruptions cause far more climate change, and the initial disaster last only for a few years.
@charlestalks56385 жыл бұрын
@@AlanWattResistance Yes it's true there have been several major changes in climate in history and they have all lead to mass extinctions. Is that a bad thing, well it takes looking at it from a philosophical level. In most people's eyes, the loss of life and habitat is seen as a bad thing, but then again it's happened in the past so it must be alright 🤔

Riken Chapaneri they're qualified vets. I'm sure they can give their children a good education

There's nothing in the video that suggests that they aren't sending their children to a state or private school. They're not hermits.

Theres always a couple of hundred grand stashed away with these types, these types are not doing this with nothing, the renewable energy guy, thats money for old rope, thats not work! Although to be fair to the vets they would have grafted, so fair play to them.

I wonder if they get really sick if they go see a doctor or do they just get sick then a fever and then pneumonia and die like 300 years ago?
@annefricker36214 жыл бұрын
Why wouldn’t they go and see a doctor if they needed to?
@Wtornado4 жыл бұрын
@@annefricker3621 some do not want to bother with the 15 hour ER waits or the price of the meds paying the difference. Once my doctor did not prescribe antibiotics and said it will go away within a month and he was right .Three weeks in my immune system did its job it was gone. Call you health center and ask a nurse when you have a fever must you go immediately and she will say no only if you have it over 3 days in a row and 3/4 of the time it breaks before that.
