In order to be successful in life, we always have to fall and face a few bumpy roads that way we can learn from them. Take your Dad as an example. He put together a lamp that required wiring. Bonnie and Joel, Being a parent is one thing, but parenting is really hard work. It's hard to know what we need to teach versus what is best for them to learn on their own. My daughter just turned 17 and is really struggling emotionally with things these days and I feel like I have let her down. I have had a hard time lately from a spine/spinal cord injury 7 yrs ago. I worry I have missed many opportunities to comfort her, kick her butt, build her up and love on her, etc. due to re-learning how to do things, constant pain, the many surgeries (4 in the last 2.5 yrs alone), hospitalizations, healing time, etc. As a parent, I remember thinking at each age and stage that "this is such an important time in their development". I still say it, but feel like I've really missed some major teachable moments and opportunities to talk to her and build her up. I agree and think that the older she gets, the more you have to step back and let them learn some of these tough things on their own. That also means, however, that we have to be there to celebrate them for the good stuff, hug them through the bad stuff, and always support them. I think this is where I feel like I've failed her lately in that I feel like one day it was good and the next she was kind of thrown into the deep end and I wasn't consistently there to talk her through things. Thank you for your example and for sharing your family with us. You are a highlight of my day, always.

I can only imagine what kids learn at school now a days. Im 29 and when I was in kidnergarten I learned some pretty insane stuff and went home and asked my mom. She of course sat me down and explained it the best way she knew how to a 5 year old. Looking back it boggels my mind how little kids even knew anything about it. I give people with kids now a days a lot of credit bc its only gotten worse. This is why involved parenting is the only way to be.
