We have just welcomed 19 Mangalitsa babies born the week before Christmas in Nova Scotia , temp -10 C (14 F ) and no issues. They are very winter hardy , just need a spot that is fairly dry and out of the wind . Thanks for teaching me about this homestead hog breed 😎👍

Just thinking I heard about it about the tribes people in Africa with Young elephants That would disturb their crops they have no older elephants so they've transplanted an older elephant with the younger elephant and the younger elephants respond they had no more problems That's why we need older men to keep the younger men in line same principal with school

Do you move your Boar's daughters to a different area? If so, at what age? Do you castrate your little males? If so, what age and then I guess you return them to their Mothers?
@bakersgreenacres
@bakersgreenacres Жыл бұрын
We do castrate the males and then leave them in till weaning time. We do remove all the piglets before they are breeding age. Also before the next litter comes. The sounder works but we have to manage it within the farm system. Thanks for a great question!

Had five litters of pigs in the last 2 weeks in Wisconsin. 2 mangli sta , one red wattle one Yorkshire. Black walnut sawdust and hay for bedding period and a heat lamp. The black walnut sawdust creates incredible Heat. Been using it for two years. With pigs and sheep. No smell from the pigs by the way

Mark, I just recently found your page...looking at these recent videos and your intro drew me to look at your earlier ones to see where you came from. HOLY SMOKES...I remember your case when I was finishing up my masters in Fish and Wildlife MGT. (2014 ish) I remember saying in class "That's BS, those are not feral"....anyway I was going against the grain, likely why I didn't get hired by the State..lol But regardless, you have one heck of a story and I admire your perseverance, even for being in the Airforce (Go NAVY ). I look forward to touching base with you this spring, I'll be raising some roasters for personal use over here Manton/Cadillac area.

Happy New Year from "balmy" Montana where our pigs and we are enjoying -22 degrees and wind chills down to -30. Our Mangas are out in this with no problem and are in deep straw bedding and shelters for snow/wind. This breed does SO well with cold weather! Now, below zero is not when we want to be farrowing for sure but we do have farrowing stalls in bigger barns where we can keep heat lamps on as needed.

Thank u so much! We live near Alpena and will be getting some pigs from you soon, have been watching your videos for years now, since before we moved up here to small farm in 2019. We started with mini potbelly's cuz these are our first pigs, first set of livestock... But it's always been our plan to graduate to the Mangalista! Soon! Hopefully before winter! I'll be calling soon. (And this is a troll name by the way, my name is Cara, I called about a year ago and got in your list but then we backed out cuz we realized we needed more time)

Note: A sounder is a group of wild pigs, meaning fair game for hunters. Team or herd are terms I’ve heard for a group of domesticated pigs

Thanks for making such great Mangalitsa spect information Mark! Do you supplement feed with any grains or anything during the winter? Or is it just hay you are putting out?

I have seen some aggression by mangalitsa toward smaller pigs but haven’t seen any cannibalism by the mangalitsa. Other pigs yes. But not mangalitsa.
