@Haroisaan actuall it's real meaning is mutually regarding the heart; this thinking of (to think is different in english than to think of). You would never say "wo xiang ni cuo le" for an example of your proposed usage. This xiang definitely means si nian, to miss someone; the reason is their mutuality, the things which drew them together and their common regard of the heart. You can understand Chines better by a thoughtful decomposition of the characters into their elements. xiang can mean "think of" or even "imagine" but not "think" in the sense of scientific ideation. These two words xiang and think have only a little overlap. Ask a native speaker if you disbelieve me.

Marina, I think it's wonderful that Russia has a philology day. With all that parsing, cases, grammatical forms, I'm reminded of Winston Churchill's crack about the Balkans producing more history than they can consume. I think Russian produces more philology than it can consume. Maybe the Lord put Russian on Earth to make Chinese look easy! Cheers, -dlj.

David Lloyd-Jones but Russian is not that difficult as it seems! In reality English is much more difficult!! But of course nobody believes it until starting to study both 😀. At the same time English and Russian are often times similar when we see into radicals in Anglo-saxon radical words. It's a curious and exciting thing to see! The same happens when you start comparing Russian and Chinese!!!

I notice that a lot of Chinese learners from other countries have Beijing accent. Maybe that's because most of time people tend to think that Beijing dialect is the standard of Mandarin, though actually it's not. But since Chinese learners have difficulties in listening to a Chinese speaker with a thick accent, so maybe they would only focus on the language materials from Beijing or other northern parts of China, where people share the same characteristics that are different from the southern accent. It is even interesting to notice that there are some fluent Chinese speakers from other countries who have very thick Beijing accent, for example, extremely rhotic pronunciation with zh, ch, sh, r. I'm not saying that it is bad to speak Mandarin with a local accent, just like English learners must choose either British accent or American accent. But that's just an interesting phenomenon, and I think that might be a good topic to do with. Anyway, you are really a patient and enthusiastic Chinese learner! Good luck!

So what's the difference between 不要 and 别 ? 3rd+3rd = 2nd+3rd, 4th+4th=2nd+4th. Why can't Pinyin reflect that? It's so confusing! Especially the character 一. How many more changes not reflected in Pinyin are there? Sandhi messes up my dictionary searches.
@FluentinMandarinDotCom
@FluentinMandarinDotCom 6 жыл бұрын
不要 and 别 can both mean 'don't' do something, but only 不要 can mean 'don't want to' or 'not going to' do something. The tone changes are not written in Pinyin because the Pinyin lists the original pronunciation of the characters, the tone changes are just speech habits. It actually makes it easier when you know how all the characters are originally pronounced. There aren't actually that many tone changes.

umm……on my opinon, 要 is similar to“need” and 想 is similar to “think” “consider” or “miss”, 想要 is similar to “want”. maybe this is simple way to explain the three words
@FluentinMandarinDotCom
@FluentinMandarinDotCom 6 жыл бұрын
要 is more like 'want' or 'have to' 想要 is maybe more like 'would like to' or 'would like', but you can't explain them with a simple word, you have to look at the examples of how they are used.

So using 想要 instead of 要 is considered to be softer in tone. But at the same time is it also more polite like it would be in English?
@FluentinMandarinDotCom
@FluentinMandarinDotCom 6 жыл бұрын
Perhaps, yes, but I would say that directly saying 要 would not be considered 'rude'

I'm confused about something. My Chinese teacher (who is from China) has said that in mandarin x is pronounced like 'sh'. However, I hear some people (like in this video) pronouncing x like 'see' e.g. see-ang (xiang). Which is correct?
@FluentinMandarinDotCom
@FluentinMandarinDotCom 6 жыл бұрын
Neither is really correct, because the 'x' sound in Pinyin does not exist in English. It would be very misleading to say that it is 'like the sh sound' because it's actually quite different. It's closer to the 's' sound, but it's 'softer'. The main difference is the position of your tongue in your mouth. It's quite hard to explain but I will be discussing this sound in detail in a future video.
