I just did this with mine, but every time the spring keeps falling off! Am I doing something wrong. Does the blade need to be out while rensetting?

The spring can be very jumpy when you're putting the case back together. Since it typically has the casing to prevent it from popping off. So for you it's likely just a matter of being really careful and trying a few times. It technically doesn't matter how you have the blade set when putting it back together, but I typically leave it in a "loose" state - ie not fully extended nor fully retracted.
