Not just "pudding" vs "puddin'", it is bah-nah-nah vs Buh-nan-nuh. Also, that looked like the real deal, not that bs made with instant pudding that some places try to pawn off as nanner puddin.

I love these travel videos! I've used so many of them to get food ideas when traveling to the same places (so far Portland, OR, Louisville, New Orleans, and Mike's mini-stop in Vegas). But the thing I've taken the most from these videos is "ask the locals", and I now do that whenever I travel somewhere the Sorted crew hasn't visited.

Another tip we've learned is, if you are visiting an ethnic enclave like Chinatown, is watch where the l9cals eat. If a restaurant is full of tourists, avoid it like the plague. If it's full of locals, you are guaranteed an authentic experience.

One important thing to highlight about Southern buttermilk biscuits is the type of flour that is used. They are made with white lily flour which uses soft red winter wheat which has less protein and gluten than standard all purpose which gives southern biscuits the lightness that is desired
@AB2B

I was hoping someone had mentioned this. Yes, the flour is a *huge* part. Without White Lily and their biscuit recipe, my biscuits are what the family likes to call Tennessee fighting biscuits. ;)
@Ashtari

You can fake it by cutting all purpose flour with cake flour which is a MUCH softer flour. That's what I do, since I can't get proper flour for them.

Too true. Whole articles have been written about flour selection when it comes to making biscuits outside of the South. That soft wheat grown in the south may soon become a thing of the past due to large AG companies buying farms. The closest approximation most of us can get is low gluten flour for high loft while baking (like pastry flour).

They're doing a series on Southern US cuisine right now so if you haven't watched it yet, head over to the Jolly channel! Loads of hilarious moments in there as well as really some really nice interactions with various restaurants' staff.

As a native of Georgia myself (nowhere near Savannah, though), we absolutely go above and beyond in the generosity department. It is a very real thing. There are exceptions, of course, but generally speaking most people will welcome you in like family and do all they can to make you feel at home. And after you live here long enough, you just get used to it. I've never been to Savannah, so I've never been to the restaurants y'all were at, but the welcome you got does not surprise me at all (nor does the food market in the gas station; that's as Southern as it gets too). Keep up the great work, gang!

I lived in Savannah (right next door to the Savannah Theater off of Chippewa Square on Bull St.!) for two years as a newlywed, a whole lot of years ago. The city will always have a little piece of my heart. The apartment where we once lived is a swanky hotel with luxury suites now. You even had a glimpse of the statue of General Oglethorpe from Chippewa Square flash by in the intro and I nearly cried when I saw it. Savannah is one of the best, quirky, eclectic, history filled cities you ever want to visit, The people are truly friendly, the scenery is gorgeous, and the architecture in the historic area is extremely beautiful. It is an absolute jewel box of a city. I have no doubt that you boys can master biscuits. Free tips for you: 1.)Make sure that your flour, bowl, chunks of butter, and buttermilk are all ice cold. 2.) DON'T OVERWORK YOUR DOUGH! And just an FYI, you don't have to have a high end, bougie biscuit cutter. A drinking glass with straight sides dipped in flour will do. So will a clean, dry, flour dipped empty tin can. Hope this helps. I look forward to seeing you all take on the buttermilk biscuit challenge. This was a lot of fun to watch. Thanks for bringing back so may wonderful memories of Savannah.

LOL I didn't notice but it looks like Jamie's almost sweating wanting a bite of those. Can't blame him, southern biscuits and gravy are just one of those foods.

As a Brit I adore the southern spirit, one day I might be able to afford to visit all these amazing food places, especially the one at the start I just love the idea of everyone around the table family style

Love videos like this where you’re out and about and just exploring different foods. What I’m really waiting for is a Sorted and A.T.E. (About to eat) collab! ❤
