How critical is it to have the coils "perfectly" spaced from the magneto? I have replaced all my electrics and still have no spark in my '73 evinrude 9.5. Everything's attached the way it should be but I don't have the alignment ring to properly space the coils.

i just came here to find the answer you are chasing. My thoughts after seeing this man magnetise a bolt to the flywheel magnets. I think you have a good amount of tolerance seeing as though that bolt was magnetised from at least 3-5mm away?

Hi Mike, I fixed an old coil that the wire broke on the inside today. One of those 1947 TD-20 backwards coils. Strange design with the magnet in the middle and not on the flywheel. I was able to solder new wire on and patch up my access into the coil. Wasn't sure if it was possible but it worked👍

Thank you for video. I have a question. I have old single axle small tractor Gutbrod Terra from 70th, and I need to upgrade it from point to electronic ignition. A problem is that it has flywheel with four magnets there. How can I remove unnecessary three magnets from flywheel? Thanks for advise.

I wonder if the magnet is a neodymium magnet, and at what strength. For my home made break disc windgen I used 24 N45 neodymium magnets. N55 is too strong and will fry my coils. Or is the magnet in the outboard engine just a regular black ferrite magnet. Thanks in advance for the info.!

I bought a new magneto cam I see the another one was broke I put the new one in points gap at .020 I put it all together I go to pull on it matter fact I can’t pull on it the rope won’t come out and the powerhead moves what’s going on and the other magneto cam broke I have no idea why thanks for your help your videos are really good

hi mike have a Evinrude fisherman 6 hp 2stroke i have replaced the coils sparkplugs condensers good spark at the plugs points set to 20 thou , got the carb off how \ do i adjust the needle valve at the front of the carb ,have cleaned the carb out all new jets and float, .have compression could you assist me with the carb the fly wheel has 59 on the top the thing wont fire up done timing ,also put new petrol feed pipes from the fuel filter and up to the pump and to the using 50\50 2stroke petrol bowl is fresh 2 stroke getting petrol to the pump & to the carb still wont run . yours cheesed aff fi SCOTLAND Ian NEED A BIT HELP

Say thank you to bringing things into focus, I do have a question. I have a 1955 Evinrude 5.5hp, it starts very nicely and idles great but on high speed is lacking some power (I'm test running while in the lake.) I don't have a speed gauge but it feels like it's only doing 5 or so mph. Mind you, I have this motor mounted on a 16 foot canoe. what could be going on?

I wonder if you can answer a question for me? On my flywheel I have magnets on either side. Now it looks like one set has factory paint on them. Is that normal? Thanks🇨🇦 Mercury 2-stroke Thunderbolt egnition 9.8. Think it's a 1986 but the serial number has disappeared. Is there any other way to find out the year? Just purchased it up here in Canada for $700 . Crazy I know. I'm in the city. Anyways, I just finished the points, stator and wiring but, until I find the year I can't go any further.

Hi. My friend helped me change out coils, points, condensers and plugs- when we go to put the flywheel back on and try to crank motor it seems to be hanging up on something or wanting to take like the throttle cable or spark plug wires with it? Something seems to be binding? Its a 1968 6 hp johnson- any help would be appreciated! Now we even switch back coils to see if that made a difference- clearance wise. It did not. Thank you

Magneto is in a bind. Remove flywheel and try to move magneto. It should move freely.

The motor or magneto does turn by turning over motor by hand- thats how we set the points gap but when we try to put the flywheel on it seems to be binding or hanging up on something

So my understanding is that the points simply collapse the primary winding's field which in turn induces voltage into the secondary winding producing an increased secondary voltage to fire the high resistance plug.

Yes the permanent magnet in the flywheel generates a voltage/current which saturates the primary winding of the coil. When the points open the field collapses in the primary coil and induces a voltage into the secondary coil which then fires the spark plug. As far as the high resistance plug these old outboards use solid wire secondary wires and regular spark plugs. The resistance is the spark plug gap which the high secondary voltage (20K plus) is able to bridge.

Help! I was replacing my flywheel on a B&S 21hp yt3000 and dropped the key way down the hole in the crank. Using a magnet pulled it out and there is a 3/8x 1 7/8 magnet bag that came out. What does this do and it seems to long for the bolt?

Wow, very useful. I’ve been restoring a 1955 Evinrude 3hp outboard. I’ve been having issues with the ignition system. And this was perfect timing. One question I have is how do you know which coil goes to which cylinder? Actually I have two questions. I’m assuming the coil should not make contact with the flywheel and that there should be a gap between the coil and the flywheel. If so, how do you know when the coil is positioned properly?

hi there tmike ive got an old 71 johnson 25hp ive gone through your vids and others and just cant seem to get a very good spark , new points condensers coils even spark plug wires , i can get her to fire up but just doesnt feel quite right , ive compared the spark to a friends 25 evenrudes and yes mine is not as bright , ive checked ground , set points with timing tools just like yourse and even voltmeter, the flywheel looks fine but is there a maintance that get done to them , do they go bad ? could really use some advice your neighbor from texas .

Yes flywheel magnets deenergize - test magnet with a screwdriver. You can measure magnet strength with a Gauss meter. I will make a video soon

If you can find a very strong magnet, repeatedly rub it across your weakened magnet. The strong magnet will realign the magnetic domains inside the weakened magnet [source:
