The additional shafts with master pins actually compromise the security of the lock. For instance, if there are 3 shafts with master pins, this means that there are 8 possible keys that can open the lock, instead of just 2 keys with the single shaft containing the master pin.

Fun facts about locks: most locks have 5 different shafts in the lock. Some have 6. Different manufacturers have different numbers of pins. Ie Taymor and schlage have pins 0 to 9. Where as some of the weiser locks use 0 to 6. if you look on the side of your keys you can sometimes see a 5 or 6 digit number. Its the number that corresponds to the pins in your lock. different numbers are different sizes of pins. 0 being the smallest and 9 being the biggest. Thats all for now. Maybe ill think of more that i have seen and put them in another video.

Can I respectfully suggest a correction in your video? When describing the master key system your video shows the head shape of a Quickset, Schlage and an ASSA key. The milling (keyway) of these 3 different keys would not allow them to work within the same lock shown so it would not be a functional master key system.

So when a master key exists in a building, all the locks are identical except for one small part of them. So anyone can enter any door as long as they make a slight alteration to their already existing key, which they can compare to the keys of other apartments in the same building and find which parts are the same and which part is different.

@gimmethegepgun4 жыл бұрын
Adding another driver pin to a shaft makes it so that there's a second cut that will make that shaft allow the lock to open. By designing the locks that you want to master key such that all of them have a common cut key that will open them, but different individual keys for each lock, that master key will open them while the others will only open their own lock.
@bmwforlife69515 жыл бұрын
Still don't understand the masterkey. Every lock in the door is different, so if the first shaft gets in position, you still have the other vertical shafts which are different. How do they all line up then?
@weltlos5 жыл бұрын
Yep, you're right. I think to get a useful master key system you need to create a completely new shear line by adding a master pin to every existing driver. These master pins have of course different sizes in every lock because they add up with the already unique key pin sizes while the shear line stays the same.
@ZenoDLC5 жыл бұрын
The ones that doesn't have master pins all have the same shear line

When a master key is made for example for a school, Is every set of shafts and pins similar in shape but they add extra pins so the master key can open it? If my question is hard to understand I guess I'm asking could you compare two different pin tumbler systems that would use the same master key. Visually I was confused with the example because it was just a pin added to the first shaft. I'll watch it again though

1:26 What causes the pins to move up? Logically, you would think that the key pushing horizontally against them would just jam. Even with a slight angle to the edge where the pin makes contact with the key, the key should still not move upwards. Or do these edges have to be at a certain angle to overcome the jamming?
@antoniomaglione41013 жыл бұрын
The Yale key, other than pushing the pins in the lock to the right height, also has a concave ridge on its sides. As matter of fact, any wrong key can enter the cylinder and not turn, or will not enter at all. That is caused by the ridge, and double the number of combinations for a given set of pins Thanks for the video...
@securityman66662 жыл бұрын
Yale does have a "Keymark" series of high-security side-milled keys but the concept predates their design by many years. ASSA (which now owns Yale) has had their Sidebar system for a few decades.

The door was locked and she decided to open the door and I worked! And tested the key with other doors and and it worked. My my uncle had a neighbor who has the same key profile coincidentally. So when I just saw this video I now understand why how my teacher was lucky enough to have a master key. Good Times back in the 90s Good Times. She never stole anything. Really good woman.

@@phoenix21studios That is what separates a good lock from a poor one. Cheap locks are made with sloppy tolerances, high security locks are tighter. A "perfect lock" would have all pins bind at the same time, meaning you would have to pick all pins simultaneously, but only pushing them up the correct distance, or in other words, in which case your "pick" would look exactly like the key. A "perfect lock" would be unpickable.
