HOW DOES A ROCKET STOVE HEATER WORK

I've made the exact same setup, but with a fully insulated burn chamber and riser out of ceramic fiber board, to make the fire even hotter without damaging the steel structure. My highest temperature ever recorded temperature measured on the top of the gas cylinder was 800 degree Celsius and regularly temperatures above 700, this is measured about 1.2 meter from where the actual burn happens, it melts steal there. Every few months I need to replace the 2mm walled stainless pipe for my secondary burn because the heat just eats it away, very efficient stove, can run 12 hours one box of wood (10-12kg)

To improve this stove you can add a "Sand Battery" to it which will allow it to continue to put out heat even after the fire goes out. Take a 6 to 8 inch pipe, cap 1 end, split it lengthwise down the middle, weld each half to the outside of the barrel and fill with sand. The fire will heat the sand and then the sand will release the heat.

When you were starting the stove I was thinking if you had a clean out on the exaust pipe a couple pieces of paper lit and put in would start the flow of air. Or warm the pipe with the torch but that costs money. Most times paper is free.

Can you make this burn without attention for six to eight hours ??? What is the steel plate size and thickness ??? How hot does the base plate get ??? Nice video.

Thank you No you can’t leave it a rocket stove requires frequent feeding because it burns very fast The plate is 1/8 inch and does not get very hot there is insulation between the burn chamber and the plate

I seal the cover with fire proof rope typically used to seal wood stove doors. Etc anyplace where a fire proof gasket would be needed it’s the same material

If the inlet pipe is longer for feeding wood for a longer time, will that mess it up?

Thanks for watching Great question there is a formula for the height of the feed tube in relation to the horizontal and vertical pipe there are several sites on the web to show the math But I’m pretty sure if the feed pipe is too tall it will not work properly the air flow friction rate will increase as will air blockage by the larger amount of fuel (wood)

Thanks for watching I wrapped the internal square riser with an 8 inch round pipe, and backfilled with vermiculite then cut a square hole in a pipe cap slid it down over the pipe on the bottom I cover the square horizontal in much the same way with sheet metal encapsulating the entire piece Hope this helps

Vernon you built you RS 2 years ago, how is it doing ? I plan to build mind like yours my friend. I plan on using perlite also. The thing that worry’s means I hear these guy saying They burn out there burn chamber out in a short time.I plan as you to use 4 inch square Tube 1/4 in wall. I know the perlite keeps the heat in the burn chamber, but would that Not make the burn chamber tube burn out Sooner. I,m confused with that? Thank you For all your help.

Thanks for watching Jim My stove has been running well for two or three years with no burn out I recently converted it to be able to use pellets as well. Rocket stoves require a lot of attention while there burning because they burn wood so quickly check out that video the thumbnail is rocket to pellets

What happens if you open the ash hatch open to draw air but stuffed the hopper with wood enough to choke it? Would it draw air from the bottom port?

Yes it will but not as efficiently there is a calculation used to determine the height of the hopper as it relates to the length of the horizontal pipe and the stack inside I don’t recall the numbers but they can be found on the web pretty easily

Vernon, thank you for sharing, great video! Couple things: did you get the tank at a scrapyard, the other steel too? Is the tank literally just sitting on top of the fire rope? I know it is bolted down, but no channel the rope sits in? I want to build one of these for my home in the far north midwest, and this video has been a great help! I would suggest a fresh air in, so it isn't sucking the air out of the shop. I simple pvc pipe run to the outside will bring in fresh combustion air! Thanks again, keep up the good work! Dan

Thanks Dan No need for a fresh air intake my dust collection system for the shop is an open air system. also no there is no channel for the rope it just sits there with fire rope glue to hold it in place while I’m bolting down the tank. The tank was made from an old compressor that stopped working I removed the compressor portion and cut the bottom off the tank The steel for the fire chamber I purchased new at a local metal supply shop it is 1/4 inch thick 4“ x 4“ square tube hope this helps and thanks for watching Also the chamber is lifted off the bottom roughly 3 inches and is surrounded with vermiculite to prevent over heat at the base

@@Hinkleshop Vernon, appreciate the response and further info!! When you say "lifted off the bottom", you mean the large plate that everything is mounted on sits 3" off the floor? You sort of confused me there, where is the vermiculite exactly? Also, do you have the dimensions of the burn chamber, for example, the overall height of the riser inside the old compressor barrel? I thought I read somewhere in the comments that you surrounded the riser with a round 8" steel tube (also 1/4" thick??) and filled the area between with perlite. Did you weld a top plate at the top of the riser to "cover" the perlite? Lastly (as this seems to be a topic of discussion with rocket stoves), how far from the very top of the old compressor barrel does your riser sit? I have read that it should be within 1-2" so that the gases can reburn and not just exhaust. AGAIN, thank you for your responses and willingness to share information!! Dan

@@danielkuczero1991 By lifted I am talking about the 4 inch burn tube that runs horizontally into the tank, I raised it off of the metal plate and put vermiculite under and between the plate and the tube. I used 24 gauge flat stock (sheet metal) to hold the vermiculite in place The eight inch round pipe is standard 24 gauge 8 inch DIA chimney vent pipe I cut tabs in the very top and bent them inward toward the center square tubing and sealed the gaps with furnace cement to ensure that the vermiculite could not escape the riser is 2 to 3 inches from the inside top of the tank

Thank you the compressor tank is bolted down on the bottom with a product called fire rope or fire gasket you can get it from tractor supply
