Made a similar unit for my garage back in the 80's. I was loosing far too much heat out the stack, so I added a second barrel on top. It had baffles inside it to keep the exhaust heat from moving thru it too fast. It made an incredible difference, I would guess at over 45% increase in efficiency . It allowed for a serious savings of fuel.

You will drastically improve the heater’s performance if you run a pipe from the outside to the air intake. Right now, cold air is being pulled inside your building to make up for the combustion air and whatever air is going up the chimney. Pull the combustion air into the heater from outside so the cold air doesn’t mix with the air in the room.

while this is good, it is also nice to draw some fresh air into a building (regardless of outside temp)... so a balance of drawing outside air directly into the stove, and drawing a draft under your door (for instance) is actually better for air quality.

The hot exhaust is positive pressure so can escape into the room when nearly closed. Better is to put the restriction on the intake side and keep the whole stove negative pressure.

I laughed out loud when i saw your scrap pile... My dad was a phenomenal pipe fitter...he never REALLY retired. You Tube was an up n commin concept...one he might have enjoyed If he had taken time to sit... He would have enjoyed watching this one for sure. He was like you; He "saw things" and made them. Throwing away material is like throwing away the extra Legos pieces that come with a set. It costs nothing to store them if you're already maintaining shop space. Only people that don't build things would be so stupid as to criticize anyone for saving pipe, rod, plate, fasteners, etc. Part of inspiration comes from seeing the material you have available, and when you need something, you never know how long it will take and how much it will cost.

Yes same here :) but the cost of scrap metal was so low was not worth the cost to even haul it off was a big help! Was raised around towns with refinerys so have seen all manner of ways to re-use that material my Great grandma's and grandma's shot gun houses were on foundations made of 3 in pipe and concrete;) and gma's garage was framed in 3 in pipe:) doesn't rattle when the wind blows:) I spent over a yr.making rail road scrap angle iron into brackets to use in framing! built several out buildings a greenhouse and a full deck using fence posts and those heavy brackets and lag bolts! people who lol before,couldn't believe how fast and sturdy that stuff was(is) I still show people how to re frame fences using angle iron and deck screws is cheap,easy and never breaks:)Peace Rick

I am not a welder or metal worker, but your video heading caught my attention and peaked my curiosity as I watched you skillfully create this stove. At first I was baffled by your initial creation wondering what it was you were really making.. however, I stuck with you all the way through and was greatly impressed by the level of your hard work, ingenuity and professionalism. What an amazing skill and achievement sir. Also, now I understand what you have finally constructed, I'm inclined to agree with some of the other commenters suggestions, especially about lining the drum with fire bricks and adding a radiator or two filled with water, leading off left and right of your stove. Nevertheless it's a great project and every bit worthy of the challenge. Thank you for demonstrating your skill and mastery of your craft. I loved every minute.

Есть выражение-что ни конструктор, то новый редуктор, а по сему не стоит делать замечания. Трудоемкость конечно большая, но цель этого стоит. А главное в том, что это творческая работа. Можно было бы показать скребок для удаления пепла (это, конечно, шутка). Этот ролик меня вдохновил на свои идеи, и это здорово. Желаю автору дальнейших творческих успехов и крепкого здоровья. Brave technician. The heat will last dramaticaly longer when you place inside and around from bottom till up a layer of heavy bricks for fireplaces. This mass captures the heat and delays the cooling. Best wishes! from greece.

I built a very controllable heater from 3/16 plate, 4 in exhaust, screw adjustable intake. Very good at long slow burns. Only real issue is the flue runs cool and creosote builds up in the pipe. I just happened to have a 4 in flue brush so I can go up about twice each season and brush out the buildup. I was thinking about a bread baking oven using a similar pipe design to yours where the pipes would be inside the drum running from the lower fire box up to a smoke chamber and out the flue. The pipes would carry the exhaust through the baking chamber to heat the oven from almost 360 degrees around to eliminate hot spots. Like your innovative designs.

Grandma used to save potato peels and dry them and once a week throw a handful into the stove and never had any creosote build up just a film of powdery dust in the spring.

An empty aluminum can once in a while does the same as those expensive creosote sticks they sell. Put one in the fire and you'll soon hear the creosote harden like glass and pop off the inside of the pipe like someone is dumping sand in there.

Up it to at least a 6 in flue and choke it slightly with a damper this will burn cleaner, your fuel/air mix is producing to much carbon, more air is needed

@@lightpropulsionguy the idea is to slow down combustion, not increase it. One of the reasons I built this stove was to control combustion. It probably not making any more combustion byproduct, it’s just cooling down and precipitating out of the smoke stream. Hotter flue gas carries the byproduct away to the atmosphere.

My friend had an oven like you describe in an ice shack for fishing in Maine. He built a tin box around the flue pipe, with a little door, and some adjustable vents, and an oven thermometer...you could cook a whole frozen pizza 🍕 in it.

Охлаждение камеры сгорания приведет к неполному сгоранию топлива, не будут сгорать дымовые газы, это наоборот - топливо в трубу

Единственный наверное ролик который мне понравился, хотя мне как женщине это не надо, просто интересно стало, что ж он такое придумал, что оно заработало ? И очень даже понравилось всё. Смонтирован ролик просто супер, не навязчиво, ни быстро, ни медленно, всё видно и понятно. Уважаю мужчин, которые чем то подобным заняты, творят свои идеи, и не скучают в этой жизни. Некоторые ролики сразу отключаю, когда начинают после обязательной вступительной рекламы своё приветствие, потом рассказ о том что он хочет показать, и сейчас вместе с вами будем делать это. Затем рассказ о том что для этого нам понадобится, и начинает перечислять показывая каждый инструмент или продукт, не забывая рассказать о его пользе. В этот момент я начинаю закипать, когда мне навязывают прописные истины, и подчеркивая тем самым какой автор умный, а зрителям его пояснения в диковинку. Максимум 5 минут могу выдержать такой нудняк. И ещё терпеть не могу, когда говорят: наша тарелочка, наша кастрюлька, наш супчик готов, мы будем сейчас с вами пробовать наш супчик и так далее... А ваш ролик начался конкретном того, о чем говорится в названии ролика, и без словесного поноса.... 5 звёзд за ролик, хотя он мне совсем не нужен.

My experience with drums of that type is that they don't handle fire and heat that well and therefore don't last. However with the bracing of the pipes outside it should last a little longer but the fire and chemical reactions due to burning cause the metal to rust and decay quickly. Also commentary is needed for someone as inexperienced as myself to fully appreciate and enjoy. However it was still very interesting.

Yeah normally if you want them to last you have to coat them in refractory cement so they don't rust away. That thin steel just is not intended to take being used as a fire box.

Please i don't want be mean But this guy is not a welder it's a bricolage 🛠 man. Those welding are not professionnel and to be true it's dangerous to make some welding amateur like this on a stove cause the carbone monoxyde can go out on this welding, you can died. This guy is not bad but he need to learn how to make safe stick welding, there is a lot of vidéo on youtube to do that. But iam agree with you welding its fantastique to create thing 👍

Nice, the pipes provided the air gaps which served as an insulation. Here in the Philippines there is so much grass and other fibers which can served the purpose. Talent comes along naturally. Much so when we can present the concept thermodynamically.

@CraftMaster - I like the fact you've repurposed everything in this fabrication, however I'd suggest filling the exterior vertical pipes with concrete or sand, that would accumulate heat, then radiate it akin to an electric storage heater, providing welcoming heat long after the fire itself dwindles. We used to place large rocks around our campfire for the same reason. 👍🏻‍

My dad did this exact build in 1966. Only he had a blower system on it. Heated the entire house. He died in 1989 and used it every winter

T H A N K Y O U !!!, For a wonderful video. I have read quite a few of the comments and they all speak true. The main thing, that I can see, if you can do is to cut out a bunch of scalloped strips of another barrel that will weld to your stove barrel and to the vertical outside pipes, every couple of inches of the vertical area, so that LOTS of surface area is solidly attached to the outside of the barrel and to the vertical pipes. That, in itself, will transmitt the heat, from the walls of the barrel, into the vertical pipes, lining the outside of the barrel...thus sending more of the heat into the room, utilizing heat exchange to a higher percentage! Right now, the vertical pipes are acting like insulation against heat exchange. It all works thru SURFACE CONTACT. ( I have been a tool designer, for most of my life). You show that you have great design skills, as you SEE a concept and build to it. Keep right on.( I found, many decades ago, that if you pray to God, and thank Him, that you realize that He gave you the talent, and give Him the parameters of the item you're needing, He will SHOW YOU what that item looks like and how to build it, along with all the procedures for its use. Always give HIM full credit for it. Your connection together will grow stronger and your Design abilities will get quicker and better.) I SUBBED Bill, from Tn. 🇺🇸

Beautiful build, I built a 28x24x24 for my 40'x40'x15' and the wood you loaded would get me up to temp in about 45min and last 4 to 5hrs the trick is to run heavy tube through the burn chamber and out each side then build a fan box to mount to them I even made bent extensions to insert for speedy foot warmers and/or shoe dryers

I built a stove exactly as you describe years ago. I discovered it made great frozen pizzas too. Stuck a couple copper pipes inside the pipes of the stove and set a pizza pan across them and turned every couple minutes. The air flow was enough to heat the whole thing though the side closest to the stove body would have burned without turning. I heated a 1,000 square foot house for two winters with that barrel stove.

It’s great seeing people actually making useful items from metal that often went to the scrap yard. I come from a family of certified welders, structural welding test isn’t a easy test. All 3 positions are tested, flat, vertical and overhead. Then a strip or coupon is cut out and the weld is Xrayed for air holes and then put into a bender to test Tensile Strength. Being a plumber for years I tried stick welding but never got certified. Silver solder was tricky back then, getting the copper cherry red and trying to get a smooth clean solder. With all the new highly engineered welding equipment being either spool feed or using a stick, temperature is critical and these new machines are programmed to keep it correct. I have always gauged a mechanic by their tools, for years it was thought to be a male dominated trade, but during WW2, women did most of the welding and riveting, aka ROSIE THE RIVETER. I have amazing Trades people, many women who are great mechanics and Trades Persons. I need to see who makes AEG tools ? All the great trades people are using this brand. Thanks for showing how scrap is one person’s gold. I have repaired radiators made from black steel pipes which lasted for years on Steam boilers. Steam is easily understood when you know the basics, it rises and expands at 1700 % as it converts from water to steam, I always used Black steel pipes and black cast fitting, they are designed to split for replacement. On gas piping Black Malabar fittings have not casting holes. All trades have their own tricks, which often takes years to learn, usually from an elder Trades person. Few if anyone knows it all and KZbin is a great resource to start learning ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Along with every Trade come the jokes associated to them, being a plumber for years I liked them all, there is brand of Suspenders that are colorful and are made with embroidered images of each Trades person, of course the plumbers suspenders were out of stock. With all the bending and movements through tiny places, dragging along a small MC Acetylene tank which’s flexible hose and turbo torch is attached keeps you alert to say the least … lol, it’s great exercise, mostly you need to know how to lift correctly with your knees and back straight, most of the muscles need upper body strength for turning wrenches Or threading pipe with a ratchet dye head , sorry kid the Rigid 300 is in the shop and this job is behind, so get moving. Oh the fun of being an apprentice under a Master Plumber, fetching coffee for that fat bastard in my case who sat in a chair with a school poker stick, like he was a Maestro leading his own quartets …lol Humor is what keeps us all together, job pranks are seen as fun , such as disconnecting the Lead extension cord of the person drilling away 2 stories above you, and pretending to not be aware of how it happened, hey there’s a dozen people working on this floor, perhaps it got caught by someone walking around and tripped … I f you do not have have the ability to learn and laugh at the same time, find a desk job somewhere. The trades are not for the weak hearted folks, we work hard and play hard, but without malice, again find another line of work … lol I truly enjoy trades people, see when you enjoy whatever you’re doing, you’ll never work a day at all, meaning it’s fun.

My dad used to make wood-buring stoves out of 55-gallon drums. He made the firebox horizontally on the long axis of the barrel, with doors and other parts from a Franklin stove kit. These worked very well. He also made one out of a water heater, which was long enough to lay meter-long logs inside. The fires would burn for days and days!

Whenever you are dealing with Sparks or grinding stuff with a cutoff wheel and like that or deburring things ,make sure that your eye protection is first-rate. Not just a pair of glasses. When a spark hits your eyeball it will weld itself into your eyeball and it will not come out ,you will have to go to an ophthalmologist and they will have to grind it out of your eye. Now going to the opthamologist and having that done is only a hour-long procedure but it will scratch like hell until u get it done and its a giant pain in the ass and will keep you down for a whole day maybe a day and a half. I was a machinist for 35 years and had to have this done several times because I was stupid. Don't be stupid ,get pair of really good goggles when you're grinding things.

I used goggles when I first started grinding. One time a piece of metal went through a gap between the goggles and my nose,bounced off the lens and into my eye,I had to go to hospital to get it out. Now I always use a face shield,much safer.

That's a pretty good description but the details are a little inaccurate. The eyeball at the front is a fibrous membrane (clear in front of the pupil) coated with water-based gel. A metal fragment can't "weld" to it. But the hot fragment of metal/grinder is driven hard into the surface and needs to be dug out using the beveled point of a needle (which looks like a sharp pointed crowbar under a magnifying glass) or possibly a burr (which is a miniature toothed ball on the end of a spinning shaft in a Dremel-like instrument, but slower, which cuts like a tiny tool in a milling machine. The fragment isn't "ground out" more like digging a seed out of an avocado. It is painful afterwards, like sand in your eye once the local anaesthetic wears off. I've been on the operating end of those tools many times, and the receiving end a couple of times as I do some hobby metalwork. Use good eye protection, the message is spot-on.
