If you haven't seen it yet, check it out. I very relaxing and educational couple of hours. I now know the power of the 'geography of parts' 😁

Love slot cars, and currently close to 800 in my collection. My favorite is a 3-car boxed set of the 1970 Porsche 917's in Gulf colors from the 1970 Le Mans 24 hrs., made by FLY some years ago. About 175 of so of my cars are from Scalextric. The new Digital ARC PRO system is what I run, and Scalextric did a great job on it, as well as the App.

This is the first time hearing of the brand. Growing up, my brother and I just had the basic sets of track and cars. I do recall after several minutes of track time, the smell of electricity would grower louder and louder from the cars. Fun times, though.

Mine was a Toltoy Tyco Command Control set - the race cars had steering that caused them to run against the raised edge of the track which had 2 lanes with 3 live wires embedded in it. Each car used 2 of the wires for power, (car 1 say left and center and car 2 the right and center). This allowed the car to steer from one side of the track to the other which was needed as there was a 3rd slow obstacle car that use a wire pin in a grove on the sides of the track to hold it to one side of the track or the other. This meant you had to pass it on the straights or on the outsides of corners if it was on the inside of the corner, the race cars would drift to the outside of corners since they were not held to the inside so no passing possible on corners if 3rd car was on the outside of the corner. This meant strategy was needed so you didn't get held up too much following it around corners then have to slow right down or stop to get room to corner/turn to the inside lane after the corner to pass it, also meant both cars used the outside lane around corners so you needed to swap lanes to pass if you were faster. Great fun. Just saw a video of a different version of my set that had a center divider on some corners so race cars could use the inside lane, way cool.

I never knew what Scalextric was until James May made that episode where he made the world's longest track that went through an entire town. Here in the States, I grew up with the smaller scale slot cars from Tyco. The cool thing about those was that they sort of stuck to the track magnetically. Or electromagnetically. I had a track that went up the wall called, "Cliffhangers." Tons of fun.

Started with a basic figure of 8 track with two very hectic Mini clubmans. Then bought a ton of second hand track from a vicar, learnt how to fix up the bits his son had destroyed, neglected, and build a wonderful track. Loved a Ford Escort in black and gold with working headlights. Must have drive my parents spare, asking them to frequently sit in the dark, so I could get full effect. Always wanted an SD1 Police Car but couldn't afford it.

I simply adore Scalextric. I still own many of my collection from the 1960s (very abused by my friends and I) and have added a multitude since then. My collection is now close to 60 cars. My favourites are the Legends remakes of 60s and 70s F1 cars and I will definitely be adding the six wheelers ... I idolized Lotus and Tyrrell.as a kid, and Jim Clarke and Jackie Stewart still adorn the walls of my basement race den. Thanks for a great video.

This video took some real skill and creativity. Making something as simple as Scalextric seem like the engineering marvels of SpaceX really took some effort. My favourite Scalextric car was the Saudia Leyland Williams FW07. I never knew there was a Lotus 79 available. This would have been my favourite otherwise. The really cool thing about the FW07 was that it performed better than the Minis or the Ferrari 312 just like it would have done in real life so, even in miniature, the engineering and the physics that made this a faster car in real life filtered down to the model. A really cool thing I discovered, when the slick tyres became so worn with age that they could barely take the corners without massive powerslides and could hardly get off the line without a ridiculous amount of wheel spin was that an application of pritt (the non-sticky sticky stuff) directly to the tyres made them grip like a hot set of sticky Dunlop karting tyres from 1982.

Grew up with AFX & Tyco slot cars at home but also lived close to several commercial tracks. Owned maybe 2 dozen Parma Womps over the years. Still take the fam (including my 5 year old grandson) racing at my favorite track in NJ whenever possible. As for Scalextic cars, first in my heart will always be the Gulf liveried GT-40s. Though the over scale 'Super Karts' roll a lot quieter and are a joy to run with the young ones at home.

I got my first set in my late teens, had to buy it myself. I built on that set to have around 60m of track, and over 20 cars of all types. I used to re-wined the motors, which gave you different torque caracteristics. Some excelerated very quickly but had ordinary top speeds, while others excelerated slower, but had awesome top speed, with wheel spin often happening when taking of from start due to the big torque. Had fun all the same. Sadly, sold it all for cheap when I had a garage sale. Wish I hadn't done so these days, as there where some value in what I had. This was around 30 yrs ago.

Sorry but Scalextric is ok for home and as a toy, I’ve owned in the past a small shop of car slots and the best track is for sure Carrera, way more smooth track so you can slide ways very nice and also the distance between cars is quite bigger that allows you to run trucks by side without problem. I had around 16mt of track with 6 lanes and was a piece of fun, very good old times! 😁

When in the RAF and stationed at RAF Akrotiri (1965-67), Scalextric became the rage, and used the normal small plastic kits in the figure 8 configuration in 1966, as there was a local shop in the town of Limassol, where we could by the kit cars that were clear plastic, so that we could paint the insides any colour we fancied, and fit bigger motors, and good quality tyres etc. We didn't want to spend a fortune on possible unreliable plastic clip together tracks, so managed to get permission to use a disused parachute packing building, over the road where we lived on the base, and proceeded to scrounge materials like sheets of hardboard or some flexible plywood, rolls of copper strips, glue, some heavy duty batteries from the MT section etc., and also some power tools like jig saws, circular saws, screwdrivers and other tools, so the build cost was zero. So I think there was about 6 of us who were permanently (plus some fellow helpers with spare time) going over there to start the sturdy frame work, lay the track on the top, jig saw out the slots, glue down the copper slots, cut some square holes into the track for the marshals to rescue cars that come off the track etc. Then there was a stand build for the 'drivers' so that they had a clear over view of the track, and once tested for electrical continuity of the copper slots, a work bench for the 'drivers' to run in their tyres, run the gears in, maintenance of their slot cars etc., as it all got to be some serious stuff to compete against others, and trying to find the best quality hand controller that didn't get too hot, plus deliver a good supply of DC to the track, and good enough to survive hours of use. No one really minded if others put in a bigger motor that would fit in the body work properly, and encouraged the others to try and make their cars run as fast as they could, and handle well too. Once done, and further testing done, we then spread the word at the base, which also spread to other bases in Cyprus, so that teams could come along, bring their families if they wished, for a great evening of racing other teams, and word of mouth spread for more an more people wanting to race their cars against others. My favourite car was the Ford GT40....:) Sorry, a bit of a long story, but scalextric cars hold a lot of memories of those days. The 'club' was still running when I had finished my 'tour' out there in 1967, and what happened after that I don't know, but it was great fun building a sturdy track, scrounging all the gear, and helped a lot of people enjoy themselves........racing plastic kit cars....:) No doubt modern ones are much better cars today though.

I don't remember details, but I did have a simple track back when I was a kid in the 80s. I liked it a lot. The biggest problem with it was the same if I were to own one today. Not enough space to have anything than the smallest track. A small track is just not as fun in the long run, not just because of the size, but also because of the limited amount of designs you can have. When video games reached a point where they looked and felt good enough (late 80s in my case) I more or less gave up on scalextric. I guess it was similar to train models. I would love nothing more than having huge tracks and model trains on them, but in a small room....then came Railroad Tycoon. If I were rich or at least had a large enough apartment/house, I would 100% get scalextric and trains.

Bold and Burrows model shop in St Albans, Herts, UK had a pay as you go track and that was THE place for us kinds on the way home from school. Wish I still had my Chaparral 2C in lime green with a RiKo motor and an MRRC controller - ah, those were the days... We went onto make our own chassis from brass wire and tubes during metalwork lessons at school and cover them in clear plastic bodies painted on the inside to keep them from being scratched. You see - we baby boomers did get to learn something good at our low expectation secondary modern schools...
