Eddy Type Speedometer or Mechanical Speedometer.
An eddy current speedometer operates on the fascinating interplay of magnetic fields and induced currents, providing a dynamic and reliable means of measuring a vehicle's speed. At its core, the system involves a strategically positioned permanent magnet on the vehicle's rotating component, often a wheel. This magnet generates a magnetic field that permeates the surrounding space. Well, for older cars with older systems such as restorations, etc..., this 100% *IS* how an *ACTUAL* speedometerworks, unless they've had a digital conversion. Plus, this video is what I specifically was looking for, as I'm not currently interested in digital speedometers, so this video worked for me. Saying older speedometers aren't "actual" speedometers, is like saying horses aren't actual horses because we use horseless carriages now.

@@eclipseslayer98 Fair enough, this definitely has applications for some people I guess, obviously the old style IS a speedometer, but I didn't know anyone needed to know how old ones worked. That's my bad tbh

ok but what about AC - isn't AC supplied in this application

AC is not produced because there is no coil in the system, even if AC is produced it will have no effect on the system.

But about when the wheels are spinning but the car is not moving? Say when it's stuck in mud

It doesn't matter whether the car is moving or not, when the wheels are spinning the speedometer will show deflection.

@@3DRequiem Nah ur mistaken.. only the engine RPM meter will spin would spin normally.. The speedometer on the other hand is connected to the front wheel.. So it wont work if only the back wheels of the car spin and the front wheels remain at rest when stuck in a mud..

@@merxellus1456 Speedometer cable is usually connected to gearbox, not wheel(s) So yes, spinning wheels, while stuck on the mud would move speedometer needle.
