How Does a Temperature Affect Wet Plate Collodion Process?

Dear viewers,
I'm continue to work on the wetplate manual and while I work on it, I'm learning to. In this case I've tested the process at -1C, 12C, 20C and 30C. I was certain I could solve the temperature fog with shortening developing time, but I couldn't do it. I had to cut the sensitising time. Very good feeling that with this knowledge we can make perfect plates bellow the freezing temperature and at least up to 30C.
Somebody might remember that about a year ago I tried to make a vlog how to do plates at summer heat and although the temperatures were about 33C, I could not get the plates to fog! Ironic, but it's true. I was making a test, but I could not make the plates get fog. I think I know why. My silvernitrate bath was saturated with iodine and that makes it very stable. Again, that's still a theory based on my experience, a theory that needs to be tested.

Thanks for that. We regularly get days of 42c in summer and less than 10c in winter so you've given me something else to think about as I move from dry plate to wet plate. Lol

Excellent video, thank you. I believe now I know how to adjust sensibilization time when working in my bathroom. It is sometimes too hot due to central heating.

Good for you doing proper scientific method and well-designed tests. I well remember my first steps 'solo' in collodion: Of course I had hot sunny days (they do occur occasionally in England;-) and I fought the fog - and the fog won! I also learned about crud in the silver nitrate and oysters on the backs of plates, etc. etc.! It's part of learning the craft - after a lot more work I'm not too bad at it now. Looking forward to the manual!

Very informative! What I've always wanted to try but never got around to is if you can lower the concentration of silver in the bath for hot weather. Instead of using a 9% bath when it's 30C and cutting sensitizing time, use a 7% bath and keep it normal. It would probably come to the same result though yours would be faster because of the shortened time. But I also wonder, with the lower amount of silver, if it would help control fog even more.

Yes, I would say so. But I would go with 6%, although in heat you want to shorten the processing time, due to drying, not prolong it. During the cold winter I wanted to raise the concentration of the silvernitrate, but I've seen that with 9% at 0C I could work just fine.

This explains troubles I had trying to shoot tintypes here in southern USA in july. I did everything like I do at home at 70 degrees F, but in 100 F, plates were too fogged I couldn’t see an image at all other than an outline.
