My biggest problem with Ant-Man was the fact that they explained how the pym particle worked in the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and then on multiple occasions in the movie, they totally defied this explanation. Reducing the distance between atoms does not change weight, it only changes density. So how does a 170-180 poundish man that shrinks down to the size of an ant (and stays 170-180 lbs) jump on a gun someone is holding in a normal firing/aiming stance (outstretched arms) and the person holding the gun is able to continue holding their arms straight and not drop any amount of distance at all. Next, how does a shrunken WW2 era tank get shrunk down small enough to be on a key chain that hank pym carries with him for years and years then be brought back to original scale with an original weight in the tens of thousands of pounds. These are 2 examples of the movie blatantly violating their own established science in the movie. And just for good measure I'll give you a violation of their explanation that is the opposite of the 2 I've already mentioned. Scott Lang hits a plastic Thomas the train toy with an enlarging formula pym particle (or whatever you want to call it) and instead of weighing the 1lb or less the toy weighs at normal size it GAINS mass when it gets bigger and crushes the house. Hey movie makers, next time don't bother giving a detailed explanation of how something works if you're going to ignore that explanation for the entire movie.

They should have used the explanation DC used for The Atom. He can manipulate his density on the fly just like his size. Less theoretically possible, but more internally consistent. I agree fully, and it's a bit frustrating that Marvel was that blatantly inconsistent. My head-canon is that the MCU has some sort of extra-dimensional energy field that many of the superheroes access in some way or another. Ant Man and Hulk need some place to store mass/draw mass from, and it would explain how Thor's hammer doesn't fall through whatever it's placed on. (There's some sort of AI--possibly the soul gem--in the hammer that judges the user, and then draws energy to make itself immovable if they're not worthy.)

The thing with the "not changing his mass" is this; While it doesn't have to change his actual mass, it would have to change the effect gravity has on his mass. So while not changing the mass, you do change the weight (and for several scenes in the movie to work, that has to be). Which, if you alter atoms, isn't that far fetched. But it leaves quiet some stuff to be explained.

@illiji9153 жыл бұрын
and here on earth your mass and weight are basically the same thing since your weight is just the force of gravity acting upon your mass. the way they explain the pym particle basically says that if you decrease something in size it's density should increase. and if you increase it's size then it's density would decrease. so basically everything he increases in size (the ants and the thomas train) would have had a density less than air when enlarged since their mass doesn't change (and density = mass/volume). Also shrinking himself to the size of an ant with the mass of 160lbs make his footsteps have the force of like 80+ pounds on a nail. and he would've went right through the tub he was in when he first shrunk down

Hey Kylie, I finally watched Ant Man the other day, in it there is a scene where he decides to go "sub atomic", but is that even possible whilst still keeping his body's molecular structure intact? If the shrinking tech in the suit works by making the distance between atoms closer together, if they continued to be compressed together like that wouldn't it either create a fusion reaction/explosion or create some sort of mini black hole? Either way it can't be good for Ant Man.
@jakenbaked878 жыл бұрын
Actually, the reason you can't pass through stuff is because electrons, protons, and neutrons are particles that have half integer spin (Fermions). It's not due to their charge (Columb force) and doesn't actually have an explanation... it's just a fundamental observation in physics.

In the movie, Lang goes into the Quantum Realm, but in real life ( ha ha ) the maximum should be defined by the distance between atoms, right ? - Would it be possible ( like in the case of the 1966 movie The Fantastic Voyage ) to actually shrink atoms themselves ? - Noob question : Why making shorter distances between atoms actually increase one's mass, where there is no mass gained or loss ? Thanks for your reply, and keep up with the good work ! :)

@dragonheart967 Жыл бұрын
No, mass would equal weight, this simply becomes a matter of density/volume. It's the same mass taking up a smaller space, the mass is still there with the same material that gravity is pulling at. Take a sack of feathers, and say it weighs 1 pound, then you try to condense the feathers and shrink the bag to 1/4 if it's original size, and the feathers will still equal 1 pound. Same principle but at a much larger magnitude.

So, a few things ... 1. Ant-Man is clearly losing/shunting aside mass, not compressing himself. Look at the shot of him landing on an outstretched pistol. If his weight was remaining the same, or even increasing, it would immediately knock the pistol down. 2. While I get that his density would be incredibly high per cubic meter, he's barely two or three cubic centimeters. Also, would that effect his weight or his specific gravity? If he's conserving mass, just compressing it, wouldn't it weigh the same?
@PaperbackWizard8 жыл бұрын
Obviously, Pym particles don't just shrink you, but also affect gravity's...uh, effect on you. Maybe, while your density changes and your mass stays the same, Pym particles trick gravity into somehow thinking that you're actually much lighter than you are. They weaken your own personal gravity, thereby... ... They're gravitons. Pym particles are gravitons, the force of gravity itself. They change your personal gravity in such a way that your density can increase, which has the practical effect of shrinking your body, while not affecting your relative gravity with objects around you. What do you think of that explanation, Kyle?
@Rowlandi119 жыл бұрын
Idk, if I had an explanation it would be that Ant-Man's pym particles can reduce the space between parts of atoms themselves while at the same time storing the mass somewhere. Maybe in some other dimension, who knows. This would fix the density issue by changing the mass drastically and then you can makeup whatever "weight" Ant-man is. He might be like a small wrecking ball

There were two points from this video I was confused about. First you had a clip of Ant-Man jumping on top of a gun. Would a shrunken-down version still weigh the same? So why didn’t the get knocked down then? Also, when shrunken down, wouldn’t time become different? What I mean is suppose you were to look at a perspective of a mosquito’s life. Flying around, looking for a meal, it sees these giants where in relation moves around so slowly and has a life-span like a glacier. Wouldn’t time be sped up for that mosquito? I know time is relative, that’s what I mean. When Ant-Man is shrunk-down wouldn’t it be like he’s also sped-up?
@kylehill9 жыл бұрын
gschneyer According to this theory, yes, Ant-Man would weigh the same, and the gun should be pushed down (he should actually fall through the Earth due to his incredible density). However, the suit must somehow compensate for this. Time would only become different if his perception of time changed. Large objects may appear slow-moving, but the perception of time should remain the same (unless he gets down to quantum sizes, but that's a whole other conversation).

I had this hypothesis that the Pim Particles would somehow decrease another particle's interaction with the Higgs Field almost completely, allowing Ant Man to shrink down without increasing his density. Meanwhile the Pim Particles would also affect the electrons so they would come closer together, as you said already. Are there any physics majors that would be able to confirm this possibility?
@MajorArtillary8 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Wagner Not a physics major, but I'm going to give a reason as to why I personally wouldn't say it's possible. The Pym Particles can't make the Higgs Field stop giving mass, as due to the mass-energy equivalence, energy, and therefore mass, can't simply disappear. Another problem would arise if the Pym Particles made the mass transfer into energy to decrease the mass. If Antman weighs about 160lbs at normal size, than he would need to weight about (guesstimating, and poorly so) a tenth of a pound when shrunken. If 159.9lbs of matter was turned into energy, you'd get about 7.26x10^19 joules, which is what a 1.57 teraton nuclear weapon would release in energy. Antman shrinking would annihilate everything around him in a 50 mile radius, and be felt around the Earth.But I could be wrong, as I said I'm not a physics major.

I'm not saying that most of his mass is converted to pure energy. I'm saying that the Pym Particles would somehow make the Higgs Field ignore the presence of said mass. Like the extra mass becomes "invisible" to the Higgs Field, so the Higgs Field doesn't interact with it.
@MajorArtillary8 жыл бұрын
Ethan Wagner I see what you mean now. Well, we think we know that if a particle, other than a force carrier, lost it's mass it would float around at the speed of light. And being invisible to the Higgs Field would be the same as being a massless particle. I can't imagine that would have a better result on the human body than being converted to energy. The Higgs Field is also kind of an all in or all out thing, wouldn't be able to be somewhat transparent to matter.
@eagames4568 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Wagner Simply put, the Higgs field only gives mass to electrons. Anything made up of Quarks would retain their mass, thus he would keep the overwhelming majority of his mass.
@ethanwagner64188 жыл бұрын
Iam Sagittare The Higgs Field most certainly does not give mass only to electrons.

And I have asked this of others trying to explain Scott lang aka ant man: with the same mass how would that man be able to hold his gun as Scott ran along its slide?

May you do a video on Ant Man's Time Travel? I'm doing research for a novel and I'd really appreciate it
@blokeyman9 жыл бұрын
Firstly Kyle, great video as always. However, isn't team travel impossible, practically speaking? It may be physically possible, but surely travelling back in time any more than a few seconds mean you'll wind up in empty space?
@davidk13089 жыл бұрын
blokeyman I don't think you can travel *back* in time. But yes, in theory you could go *forward* in time *if* you travel close to the speed of light, (i.e. 99%) and if you travel at that speed for one week relative to anybody inside, you would be launched 100 years into the future, while everybody outside of the craft would see it moving for 100 years. (Look up relativity and time travel) Also Stephan Hawking had an episode about this in one of his t.v. shows. *time

While we're in the subject of SIZE and MASS, have you seen the Kong trailer from Comic Con? Please do a King Kong "Because Science". Can Kong's skeleton structure (and muscles) support that large mass?

0:33 without changing mass?? If that was true, shouldn't that gun be too heavy for that guy to hold on to?
@maximuskeeble31608 жыл бұрын
Is there an explanation as to why sometimes Ant man would have the same mass even after shrinking (i.e. when he fell out the window and made a dent in the mans car) but then other times it seems his mass has decreased as well after he shrinks. For example, when he is running on top of the mans gun, if he were the same weight the man would most likely drop the gun because of such an increase in weight on top of the gun.
@robb29918 жыл бұрын
+Maximus Keeble I dont think there is one. Also imagine when he turns into Giant-man and is still the same weight :D would be funny . just floating like a balloon almost.

Can you please make the video about him shrinking down so small to where he is able to time travel. please.
@ashwendhchowdhary68786 жыл бұрын
Firstly bohr's model was wrong so it was rejected. Secondly if you shrink the raduis of electron it would break heisenberg uncertainty principle and also pauli's exclusion principal
@ethancolbert56166 жыл бұрын
ok sure good explanation but can you do a video on how this allows him to go sub-atomic? if the suit shrinks by shrinking the space of/between atoms, how can it become smaller than an atom?

yeah, but if the mass stays the same, how would you explain the luggage like handeling of the Pym laboratory when it shrunk down to the size of a bag?
@chandreshchouhan97236 жыл бұрын
How do you explain this: In the movie, Ant man runs on guns and shoulders of people and toy trains. But if his mass is constant then the guy could not hold the gun straight and toy train would be crushed under an adults weight.
