A discussion of the Vladimir Harkonnen's Holtzman suspensors and how they permit the considerably large Baron to float and move around with ease. I’d also like to discuss how this device is described in the novel versus how this has been portrayed in the various adaptations.

In Denis Villeneuve's adaptation, I think Baron Harkonnen levitation was very well done, not at all distracting and well integrated in the story told. That levitation device made him impressive and menacing, which is what we wanted to see of him. 😱😱

Very much so. It contributes elegantly to his characterization in so many ways. I also like how in Villeneuve's movie it is utilized in (at least partially) explaining how he survived the gas attack.

While it's never explicitly stated he uses the suspensors for flight/levitation, seeing the multiple applications of the tech, it isn't that much of a stretch to see him use them this way. Of all the changes live action adaptations have made, this is a very minor one. As mentioned, having the various Baron adaptations rise above others is great visual storytelling, and reinforces how menacing a character he is.

Probably a power consumption issue perhaps? Weight assist would use less than full weight levitation. (I'm not familar with the techie lore that much, so it may have been explained whether the suspensors need recharging or not)

Glad to hear you came to the same conclusion, it's absolutely possible for the Baron the fly with the technology laid out in the book and it's way more dramatic and easier to depict visually than just levitating. It had to be worth trying just for the impact of the scene post meeting with the Reverend Mother Mohiam, because that was stunning.

I agree that the film depiction of the Baron's levitation/flight serves well to enhance his menacing appearance. I don't know if it would be hard to depict him as he's described in the books (wire-work could definitely allow for the bouncy glide), but it would probably not be as striking, unless his unexpected agility was somehow demonstrated. Personally, I couldn't criticize David Lynch's depiction of the Baron (even though, yes, it's definitely goofier), mostly for sentimental reasons. My favorite has to be Denis Villeneuve's Baron though. I have been meaning to ask in your previous videos and somehow it keeps slipping my mind (old age, I guess)... is it HARkonnen or HarKOnnen? lol

As always, your videos are deep, insightful and fascinating! I have often wondered how there can be so many holtzman generators around (shields, glow globes, chairs,etc) and not end up with some seriously bad explosions during any fight. One ill placec Laz-gun shot hitting a glow globe or chair would level city blocks and kill countless. I was wondering of you thought maybe, it was that glow globes and sysprnsor chairs and even the barons Suspensors are "tuned" differently somehow, so as to avoid that particularly violent reaction. Just one of those little things I think about an assassin could fire a small laz-gun at the baron and turn him into Nagasaki or Heroshima.

I'm not a doctor, but there is no doubt that constant and long-term use of such suspension devices would lead to significant muscle atrophy throughout the body. I've had family members with certain medical mobility issues and one can quickly lose the ability to use muscles and limbs, this evening includes your neck muscles to keep your head up. It would be beneficial to actually consult a doctor on a video about this. If the Baron was to suddenly lose all suspension support, I have no doubt that he would be completely unable to move and basically be an inert large blob on the floor. Muscles throughout his body would have completely atrophied. This could have other implications on the body as well, such as his heart muscles becoming very weak (cardiomyopth), and muscles needed for respiration becoming weak. But I suppose they would have the technology to alleviate all of that so far into the future.

I really like how the baron skarsgard looked while he was seated on his palace or other places (very tired with the head nod towards the floor) but when he activates the suspensors you hear the cracking noise of each one of then plus the vertebrae wich indicates how much he needs that technology to support his own weight. I only noted this on My 3rd watch of the film, the face he has from being seated without suspensors and then after flying, he looks like in complete suffering when seated.

Madame Nerd, Again, you have pierced the vale of another question regarding Frank Herbert’s intent of the Baron’s suspensor's supporting his grossly obese body! While I am not a medically knowledgeable person, I do know that people who are obese are prone to many problems associated with said issues. Notably high blood pressure, diabetes, heart issues, sleep apnea, etc. But who’s to say these issues haven’t been addressed by the time we arrive at the Dune Universe. It appears to be a double-edged sword… Your insight to the Dune Universe is deeply appreciated!

It's easy to use the suspensors as an extension of the Baron's ego - him floating above everyone else is a great visual metaphor. But I would prefer seeing something similar to what's described in the book. That word "waddle" always made me imagine him as moving something like a parade float, slow with his toes barely tapping the ground. It creeps me out to picture it.

I have no trouble with the current adaptation visualization. If the tech is there in that world, it'll be used for purposes beyond it's intention. The baron's use of it goes beyond need and into intent, which I think suits his character perfectly. It's his cane, used for moving, but also as a psychological weapon.

I personally can see where liberties might annoy some, as well as the portrayal in the deLurentus film being a bit over the top comical, but I've always appreciated the Baron's flight. As said, if glow globes can follow at various heights, and hunter-seekers can zip in from practically anywhere, there's no reason if the Baron is already making use of the tech not to get the most out of the investment. Even his gravity-reduced bulk is still wide, so it might be convenient to be able to bypass what might otherwise be crowded terrain features. Also, I feel like it can add both to his own arrogance; he feels above the world, and his taint; the very ground repels him, and does not wish to be sullied by his touch. The book doesn't say that, but I'm a fan 😊. Beyond that, fir film, and other visual media, I think it helps. The script may not have an easy time elaborating on how his bulk hinders him, or what the devices do. The descriptive text can elaborate, but we'd need some whispering fool, sharing the scene, to speak it for us. They'd be that yutz in the room ONLY there to inform tbe viewing audience, and not fitting into the scene. Showing him do more than walking, though, covers the bases, and we get what the qualities are. Again, just me.

You picked a fun one here. I think you could call pretty much all of the things with the name "Holzmann" attached to them "magical plot/visual enabling devices." Gravity has a number of names and descriptions. One of them is "a field of uniform acceleration," and the another more daunting one is, "a curvature of the space/time manifold," (in the presence of mass). Unless his suspensor's work by repelling nearby matter, pushing his body upwards in his harness (his, very well padded harness), it would have to work by casually undoing one of the fundamental forces of the universe. That would make them not just magic boxes but incredibly *strong* magic boxes. When it comes to things like the Lynch movie's depiction of the barron's mobility, well, it was the Lynch movie and Lynch understood and appreciated his subject matter in about the same way that the average professional wrestler understands and appreciates making French pastries. When you talk about the other visual sources in Dune that show the barron rising above others to look down on them from a height, all you can say is, "nothing could be more natural." Someone whose whole reason for existing was to achieve superiority to and dominance over others would naturally move towards positioning himself to rise above others, to look down on them and make them feel like small things that he could crush when the whim to crush them came to him. The upshot: "Flying"?! Meh. "Looming over"? Oh, absolutely. Nothing could be more in character for him.

As always, great video. One thing I've always been curious about is who was actually the better fighter, Gurney or Duncan. I'd lean more towards Duncan if only because Leto the 2nd kept bringing him back, but he said on at least one occasion that Gurney cou beat him 3 out of 5 times. Any thoughts on this?
@cloudbloom
@cloudbloom Жыл бұрын
I think if Gurney was the same age as Duncan that he would probably win in a fight. By the time we meet him in the book he's already fairly old and with all the physical disadvantages which go along with age. The only reason Leto II kept bringing Duncan back is because Duncam was the first ghola in history who could regain their full memories (due to certain conditions), so I feel that if he had the choice between bringing back Gurney vs Duncan he might have chosen Gurney moreso. But he only had the choice of Duncan so Leto II used it as much as he could
@carloscrecelius9597
@carloscrecelius9597 Жыл бұрын
@@cloudbloom I think that once Duncan regained his memories it proved that ,given the right conditions, it was possible for any ghola to regain their memories (as we found out with Miles Teg) . The Idaho genes proved more vigorous and better suited to Leto's genetic program. I also think that there was an element of hero worship in Paul and Duncan's relationship which affected his decision to repeatedly bring him back. I also think that Herbert himself considered Gurney to be the more dangerous fighter, even though he never said it outright. But I could be wrong.
@cloudbloom
@cloudbloom Жыл бұрын
@@carloscrecelius9597 true it showed that with Duncan it meant it was possible for any ghola to regain their memories, but keep in mind that that didn't mean it was easy. After the success of the Duncan ghola the Tleilaxu tried desperately for the thousands of years between children of Dune and God Emperor to reproduce the awakening in other gholas (in secret) and failed every time, so Leto II just had to keep using Duncan as opposed to any other ghola. Duncan was the first and only ghola until Miles Teg came later who was also an anomaly, but overall in the time frame which Leto II was around he used the only ghola to ever regain its memories under very very distinct conditions. The fact that he was building his own breeding program with the Duncans was maybe out of a sense of prescience knowing that someday someone like Miles would come from it, or partly based on sheer nostalgia for someone else to carry on the memories of such a long forgotten time that they both lived through. These books are amazing and so thought provoking, I love having discussions like this with fellow Dune enjoyers🤝

@@cloudbloom agreed, there's so many different facets to the story , and you see something different every time you read it. But weren't the Tleilaxu Masters also serial gholas( or was that from the Herbert and Anderson stories)? It seems unlikely that they wouldn't figure it out fairly quickly. But then again, they were the most inscrutable in their motivations, and of all the races and factions, only the Bene Gessirit were better at playing the long game. I loved the traps within traps within traps approach Herbert used, where literally nothing could be taken at face value. No one gives him enough credit as a master of intrigue, imo.

@@carloscrecelius9597 I never read any of the Brian & Kevin books so I can't say for sure about the Tleilaxu Masters, but I'm fairly certain that in Frank's books at least that what made Duncan such a weird anomaly was that he was the only ghola in history to ever regain their memories. Anyway I couldn't agree more about the brilliance of Herbert with his world building and philosophy, master of intrigue is an understatement! Using quantum physics wouldn't help someone float. The strong force effects the nucleus and keeps it together, while the weak force determines the space between the nucleus and the electrons. Gravity is an actually very weak and using it would require you to be able to manipulate mass of an object due to mass being the basis of gravitational pull in a vacuum. And electrostatic feild wouldn't help to give lift outside quantum locking but it wouldn't give forward motion with out other electrical system that would be beyond engineering capabilities for just one man's needs. The system controls without a brain to computer interaction would just be a frozen, electrified, zoomy one way trip into a wall then a casket. Dune has some plausible ideas that can be done but it science is pure fiction when it comes to known physics.

She performs a similar type of movement to the one I'm imagining for the Baron. Except add a little walking-on-the-Moon bounce to each glide-step.

I think you touch on an interesting point overall. If the Baron was not meant to fly, imagine instead someone of titan bulk moving around with potentially acrobatic ease. You'd think something so large would lumber. Perhaps the suspensors are intended to afford the Baron the appearance of a charging elephant. Grotesque perhaps by human standards, but commanding the same respect as any traditional giant mammal.

Without the actual suspensor technology, it would be *much* harder to depict what is in the book, since they would need wires to partially suspend the Baron, but still allow him enough movement to make it seem he was immense, but adroit. In the defense of David Lynch ; He was chosen to direct because of his recent accolades and Academy Oscar. He was not familiar with source material nor ever read the original novel prior to filming. The continuation of the portrayal of a floating Baron is just a visual connection to the 1984 film.. The Ornithopters are also relegated to this pseudo-canon by being portrayed with dragonfly wings despite the Ancient Greek word for bird ( Ornis) in the name and described in the novels with having wings like a bird. Suffice to say the novels and the film franchise should be considered ( Adapted from ) rather than based on.

Doesn’t the Baron float to the ceiling to avoid the poison gas from the Duke’s tooth in the book?

No, in the book what protects the Baron was his paranoia when he activated his shield. The book states that had he not activated the shield, he would had been killed, but also the issue was that Duke Leto confused Mentat Pyetr with the Baron when he got close to him, as the Baron was far from the Duke. The suspensors do not make him float to the ceiling. In fact when he dies, he is suspended above the floor.

There is no apparent contradiction, the visual adaptations are wrong. In the book the Fat Baron glides across the floor, he does not float around like Tinkerbell as he's been portrayed in all visual adaptations but is described as being able to move around with ease, as in like someone who didn't weigh a bajillion kilos. This all began with David Lynch's version and every adaptation since has assumed that's the correct way to portray him when it is not.

and in 2024, we STILL dont even have the personal jetpack. and yes. you CAN walk with 400 lbs. millions of americans will confirm. does anyone else love the sound the suspensers make when they get switched on in the 2021 movie? i wonder how he activates them. by will / thought? by a button? they seem to be even fused to his spine. so these things or that one big apparatus is actually transhumanistic.

When I saw the Baron flying around in the first movie i laughed my ass off and was trying to figure out what the hell I was watching because it wasn't serious sci-fi drama. Your explanation makes perfect sense and how it should've been portrayed in the movies and TV series.

One of the few concepts I actually appreciated in the new Dune novels. I only read house Atreides because the rest of the series fell flat in my opinion.

A lot of the Dune books are about the tendency of humanity to become lazy, complacent & over reliant on the old ways of doing things always working in the future. Suspensors are overused as a luxury item, as are things like chairdogs in later books. Humanity was too soft to survive unforeseen perils. The God Emperor effectively taught humans anything they thought they knew for certain was ephemeral at best and the universe would crush them out of existence without a moment's thought unless humanity could evolve to adapt & adapt fast.
