Excellent series of videos, enjoying them all! Did the Gibb about 6 years ago in July/August and side tracked to Mitchell Falls and Kalumburu (with a Kimberley camper trailer not caravan). If you thought sections of the Gibb were rough, the road to MF and then on to Kalumburu was next level bad! Many cap rock sections and corrugations that could have swallowed 4WD's! Remarkably, my 2011 Hilux and the camper trailer suffered no problems at all for the whole trip, including going to Alice Springs on the Tamami on the way home to Adelaide. To be fair, the whole trip is a year by year/day by day proposition and if you are lucky enough to travel sections behind a grader, you would probably not think it was that bad at all!
@fivedownunder Жыл бұрын
Yea its all about where you're travelling behind the grader isn't it! That sounds like an amazing trip along the Gibb! We really wanted to see Mitchell Falls but we will have to plan that for next time.

We towed a full off road van across the GRR, no issues. However that was due party to our driving style, and a fair bit of Lady Luck. Everywhere is packed…. thanks to Covid. We would do it again, but realise it’s a damage lottery. Great videos, well done.

Guys great stuff love watching your VLOGS. Me and the misses are planning our lap which we hope to start within the next year. Currently we are over landing the Middl East. One of the reasons why you might be getting dust in your vans. Check all your pipes and electrical cables which go from inside caravan to outside, like pipes and cables. Normally these ares are fitted with silicone around the pipe or cable. While you experience vibration on the graded roads this silicone seal breaks and flexes with caravan vibration which allows the dust in. Plus also check your seals on doors and compression lock seals. But I am convinced the dust comes in via these pipe and cable areas. In some cases they may be fitted with rubber grommet seals🎉. Clean and Add more silicone. And pressurise you caravans, put more in air on the inside which stops the dust too.
@fivedownunder Жыл бұрын
Thankyou guys 😄 Yea we recently did all the pipes and cables under the van and put more silicone around them while I had a torch inside the van so Tj could see the holes... so must be getting in else where... maybe the above vents... who knows... way too many holes and vents 🤣 Bloody dust is not fun 🤣😅

Hi, Folks. Dometic 'dust extraction system' - $650.00 to $750.00. If you have an ordinary openable roof vent in the caravan, open it, wedge a thong in there and close it down on the thong - does pretty much the same job - without the "computer-designed filtration system" - for about five bucks. And this idea was around 30+ years ago. I first travelled parts of the Gibb River road back in 1971 - from Mitchell Plateau mining exploration camp to Doongan Station and back - twice. Thanks for the refresher course. I would like to do it again before I kark it. Just my 0.02. You all have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi, @@fivedownunder. Yer welkum, Sir. There's no point in me having this sorta knowledge and taking it to the grave with me. It does work better though if you're travelling onyer own or the lead vehicle in a convoy than it does further back in the field. Just my 0.02. You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

It must be a large band of rain because even down at the Big Red Bash they are thinking of closing roads. And then it is supposed to come all the way across Australia to us here in SE Qld. I haven't even looked at a map this time. I am so used to no rain in my neck of the woods I have not looked. I live in a little rain shadow and miss most of the rain. But you either need to get going to El Questro or wait it out where you are. Depends which is cheaper I guess. Good luck deciding. 😊

Love your content guys, and I think it’s brilliant that your taking your family on such an adventure, but in a nutshell….. caravans should be no where near the Gibb! The day it gets black top is a sad sad day for Australia. It’s one of the few last frontiers left but in recent years it’s been getting slowly trashed by mass tourism. It was so shocking to see how many caravans were being dragged across it when I was there last year. One of your fellas was right, ditch the vans and take your swags!
@oursunkisseddays Жыл бұрын
Agree about the vans on the Gibb. We did the Gibb 5 years ago and it was really rough. It's such an incredible adventure and we hope they don't seal it. It will be a sad sad day for sure.

I purchased a caravan to travel roads like the Gibb. Why wouldn’t I use it.
@fivedownunder Жыл бұрын
Yea, look each to their own opinion. We knew what we were getting into when we did The Gibb. Unfortunately, we came away with damage, and that would be due to us not having a full off-road van. We drove to the conditions. Swags with 3 children, and one being a young baby doesn't really appeal to us lol

Don’t race through Kununarra when you get there, there is plenty to see and do from there if you make it your base. So many people just use it to restock and repair but it has some wonderful places nearby (Wyndham port not being one of them even though every tourist wants to go there)

I’ve just come across your channel, and enjoying your content. Well done. Have a question. Or the semi off-road van with roller rocker suspension capability enough to do Gibb River, and cape York? I have a semi off-road van with a two inch riser on &7” the chassis, standard roller rocker suspension. Is that enough ground clearance, and capable enough? I’m still considering a full off road set with independent suspension, and extra battery/solar/inverter. Just need plenty of $$$… Cheers.
@fivedownunder9 ай бұрын
Yea we did both those locations with our semi off road with leaf spring, sounds like you might have enough clearance, the only advice we have is maybe look at getting an axel flip to give yourself more clearance? That's what we got done and it made it alot less stressful knowing we had alot more clearance. And obviously we just really drove to the conditions on the Gibb and the Cape to lessen the damage we had 😁 Yea the dream set up is a full off road with all the extras, but don't let that stop you from exploring with the set up you have 😁 🤙

💐💐💐thank you Lisa 🍺🍺🍺thank you TJ ( and kids)- I have loved my Gibb trip The vlogs have given us so info/ entertainment/ do's-dont's for possible travellers and those who like to "armchair" travel. My one complaint? or rather observation - a map would have helped us know where you were. Loved the start of this - TJ (& van) need a shower. TJ I'm with you - showers ARE important - I have made complaints many times🤬 (pressure/ heat/too many users -too little flow ect) Frustrating Thank once again - safe travels - hope you can get fridge sorted P.S. Lisa your laugh makes me smile - PPS very early said my dad had visited in early 80's - he /they must have left vans somewhere and went to Tunnel /Windjana?? Jan Adelaide❤💙

Hey Jan 👋 we did keep the viewers up to date with where we were starting in the morning and where we were heading at the end of the drive, it would be really hard to give an up to date exact spot of where we where while editing as I wouldn't have a clue lol these roads are 100ks long... 😄 Yes, right at the start we left our vans at Lennard river rest stop and went to Tunnel Creek 😄 Thanks for watching Jan 😄😍

Probably if I did it before the bitumen, I think a rooftop tent etc might be the go. I don’t think I’ll get there before the road is fixed🤷🏼♀️so I’ll just enjoy everyone else’s videos 😊 Hope you avoid road closures with the weather coming through then 🤞🏻
