Agreed entirely. What makes the original Kino's Journey so special is that you find yourselves in the shoes of Kino, observing a situation mostly dispassionately. Kino's character design and reactions emphasise how curious and interested she is in the world. Violence was always her last resort and the 2 parter where violence is centrestage is only unique because she's forced into that situation. The episodes were in a very specific order to introduce aspects of Kino and her journey one by one. By comparison the 2017 version seems to try and present Kino as some kind of wandering badass cowboy with her visual design being more sharp and edgy. It's as though the creators of the remake either didn't understand what made Kino's Journey special or they were afraid new audiences wouldn't understand so they focused on what sells which is violence.

nice work, thanks. never realised this manga has been adapted again in 2017, but i adored the 2003 series back around 2006. i like to sum up kino no tabi as a collection of stories with a single protagonist that provokes critical thinking in the reader/viewer. if that has been lost in the 2017 series it would be a shame as i felt that was the essence of kino no tabi. perhaps anime becoming consumed by non-japanese audiences since mid to late 00's has influenced the style of the newer series, i wonder. i actually stopped seeking out new anime since around 2015 because there is more tack and just a lot more noise in the channels where i would seek anime. the market has grown tremendously and the proof of that is a re-adaptation of the kino no tabi manga within just 14 years, i guess. thanks again for a great video. i do want to peek at the "remake" now hehe

I watched both and I still prefer 2003 ver, even if it's not that good-looking. It had more impact to me, I even started to write my own comic cuz that kind of narration totally stuck in my mind. It's unique that show doesn't tell you what to think, which answer is ok, if there's anything like that. Most of the shows try to convince you "this is bad, this is good", but not here :D My biggest issue to 2017 ver is sequence of episodes (Kino's story and story of the country where everyone is welcome; 4 and 12(?) of 2003) [those who watched knows, I don't want to spoil if someone doesn't watch it yet). Knowing who is Kino made me care about this story even more, and last minutes of last episode got me so much, that I consider if that wasn't the greatest last episode of the series that I ever seen (TTGL is really close to that xd), at least one of most impactful I ever saw. In 2007 I just didn't feel that :< But still I'm happy that both exist and that 2017 show something more than just being the same story, it add something and if someone would like to make another one, I will still watch it cuz I'm a big fan of Kino. Thank you for this analysis, we think in a similar way :3

I think the 2003 looks better imo. It's visual style is far more unique while 2017s are a lot more generic
