this isn't a video about how the internet works, it's a video of what the internet is.

best internet description so far, and for yo who are wondering how the devices connect, imagine if everyone in the world had blutooth on, there would almost always be someone to connect to, that is what the entire worlds computers are doing. And to get information you simply would connect from phone to phone until you find one with the info you need.

This video doesn't consider the *physical* layer that makes up the internet. Miles of copper wires and undersea cables are responsible for making this physical connection. If you were to cut major undersea cables that connect the U.S. with Europe, for example, the capacity of the North American network to Europe (and vice versa) gets cut by a large amount, enough to overflow remaining network pathways. Eventually if you cut enough cables you can pretty much shutdown internet access for entire regions. Also, inland ISPs depend on a series of backbone networks that serve as large hubs/conduits to other connected networks. Cut those out and you also begin disturbing traffic for entire regions. The internet is anything but decentralized.

Wait, so if more and more data is flowing through 'internet exchange points', doesn't that make it less decentralized? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

the internet works based upon the connection between computers. your computer sends requests for data from google or facebook servers and the servers of facebook and google sed back the data packets to your computer allowing your browswer to display their website and use it. much like making phone calls to your freinds.
