A great video, finally testing towing with a plug-in hybrid. It would be interesting to see a comparison vs. the Hemi. Cheers

Thank you for the very informative and honest review. I currently have a 2018 GC V8, not because it is the best 4x4 but because it meets my needs for a medium capability 4x4 which can also be a comfortable towing vehicle for a mid-size (4500 lb) trailer. The new GC 4xe has different strengths and compromises. Your review captures those better than any I’ve seen.

With our Canadian winters, how does max regenerative braking change the stopping characteristics on ice and snow? Is there more sliding and does antilock work with regen?
@ericmackison95172 жыл бұрын
I imagine it slows until a wheel locks up and attempts to modulate and pulsate just like an ABS.

Good looking vehicle, does well towing too; a shame that pricing is beginning to outpace the 'regular guy' out there.
@james20422 жыл бұрын
As an owner of an EV with blended breaking, max regen is just obnoxious. The most efficient way to move is always coasting (no regen) as there's always losses when converting energy. Most electric motors in cars are around 90-95% efficient if using permeant magnets and 87-92% if using electromagnets, So coasting has no conversion losses. Regen braking should only be used when actually trying to slow down, which means it should be tied to the brake pedal. requiring your foot on the accelerator pedal to not have regen kick in is less efficient, as you will always be using or regening electricity, but never coasting. Turn off regen entirely and do it via brakes and you will get a small but notable improvement. Remember an EV motor burns 0 electricity when coasting

When the engine is running it will be charging the battery too, at least if it's like any other PHEV. Then it will deplete it as fast as possible on the highway. In my outlander I charge on the interstate, when it's full I run in EV mode. When in town the play is to run in EV mode whenever possible.

Nice review, that's a very interesting option. I would have been interesting if you saved the battery for towing. How would it be used? It should be used for its torque only. Gas when you moving at speed, mostky.

Thanks so much. It would be great if the 4xe system had an option to recharge the battery as you drive.I think Toyota's system in the Prime RAV4 allows you to do that. Would love to see a 4xe/Prime type powertrain in a midsize pick up.

The only reason transmissions need a tow haul mode is because they’re not great transmissions. That eight speed transmission in the jeeps is one of the best transmissions out there, and it mitigates the whole thing without you needing to give your input.

270/290 out of a 2.0 4cyl is impressive, but I have doubts about long term durability. That has to be at least 20lbs of boost.
@ALMX5DP2 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think it makes between 20 and 25psi depending on conditions. But vehicles have been doing that for a while now, our Focus ST w/ 2.0 turbo makes within a similar ballpark and stock engines are largely considered reliable.

So, when the battery is depleted, you’re essentially driving around carrying the extra weight of the electric motor and batteries that aren’t doing anything in an already heavy truck with just a four cylinder engine?

considering you only had 1/2 a load at the best, and a good percentage of empty / no trailer the results are a bit low. Im seeing that with 3.0-3.5T with a 3m high van in similar terrain. Around town - yes Towing - - along way to go yet! Otherwise pretty fair review.

Did you test the towing ability at highway speed up mountains after the electric battery was exhausted? This is a nice truck, but impossibly expensive. I can't wrap my head around it. Who the heck buys these things? At least a $100k pickup truck might be something someone buys as a work vehicle, and so the price and depreciation become some sort of tax deduction, but this thing? I don't see it. So who is buying these things? Has jeep become a focused luxury brand? Does the interior compete with the Lexus-Audi-Range Rover crowd? Is it more capable than the "true luxury" brands? Cheaper to insure? Reliability? What is the upside of this vehicle?

What a shame, such a beautiful and capable suv letdown by such a complicated, noisy, and crummy power train. This jeep desperately needs a proper diesel, like a new revision of the GM 2.8 (originally wrote "2.7" my bad) duramax. Maybe 400+ lb/ft of torque. You'd get better MPG and better performance and it would last much longer.
@ALMX5DP2 жыл бұрын
Seems fine to me. And you do realize the new GM 2.7 is a gas engine right? It's the 3.0 inline 6 that is the diesel.
@wildbill23c2 жыл бұрын
Or put the HEMI back in it where it belongs rather than trying to turn everything into hypermiler cars...many of us don't give a damn about fuel economy.
@ALMX5DP2 жыл бұрын
@@wildbill23c the Hemi is still available if that’s your thing. Edit, I stand corrected potentially. Looks like it’s dropped from certain models for the 2023 MY, wonder if they’re gearing up to slot the 3.0 hurricane engine in it.
@JohnSmith-ev1sm2 жыл бұрын
@@ALMX5DP Actually I was talking about the 2.8 diesel, not a 2.7. The 2.7 is gas, GM has a 3.0 inline, but they also have a 2.8 4 cylinder diesel in the current colorado; that's the engine I'm talking about, we need more engines like this instead of useless and complicated hybrids.
@JohnSmith-ev1sm2 жыл бұрын
@@wildbill23c The hemi desperately needs an update though. I own one, it was great back in 2009 but it's no longer competitive vs the 5.0 from Ford which now produces more power after its recent update. But yeah, I'd take my hemi over what monstrosity they stuffed under this poor GC. Good grief. At least the hemi still produces the same power 30 minutes into a towing trip that it did when it started out.
