Upgrade with what? More Screaming Eagle, or aftermarket? I think you missed what I was saying. The video is about after market vs Screaming Eagle. Not Screaming Eagle with after market. Screaming Eagle 131 or 128 parts exclusively vs aftermarket. You're not the first to say this, so i figured maybe I wasn't clear on the video about what I was saying. You can absolutely get big numbers by adding aftermarket products to your Screaming Eagle 131, but without the aftermarket products the Screaming Eagle 131 and 128 doesn't give you the performance that you can make from an aftermarket build. And, if you use aftermarket products like tuners or etc then you should have just went aftermarket in the first place, because now most likely you've voided your powertrain warranty. Yes, SE has certain guidelines that they have to adhere to, that is true. Yes, Im certain they can get more power out of the 131 if the had free reign to create without limits. Take a look at the King of the Baggers Vance and Hines Bike it was a 131 and it was around 170 HP 160TQ. Again you can get big numbers from the 131 SE but with the help of aftermarket, not SE warranty compliance parts alone. That's what the whole video was about Screaming Eagle 131 Kit vs Aftermarket 124. Thanks for the comment.

Because I’m wanting to do a fullyTÜV Compliant upgrade everything has to either be OEM or fully tested which is rare if the company isn’t based in Europe. This is exactly the kind of information that interests me.

@@TravelingTall idk maybe you're still not clear enough but yes aftermarket will give you higher numbers, but the reason is because the Harley Screaming Eagle parts still have to meet EPA regulations where aftermarket doesn't have to. It's like the Dodge Cummings engine, back in the days of the 5.9 liter it made good power and torque but then the EPA regulations got stricter, so they changed the engine to a 6.7 liter but the numbers where almost the same and the reason they had to go bigger displacement because the emissions was choking it down so to keep the same power the motor had to get bigger. If you take that 6.7 liter and put "off road" aftermarket parts get rid of the DPF filter and use a tuner that says for off road use only then the numbers are substantially higher. It's kinda the same concept with Harley's 131, because the emissions choke it down the displacement has to be bigger but if you use stuff not regulated by EPA you get a lot more power but that stuff will say for off road use only on it.
@ChrisMonopoli
@ChrisMonopoli 2 жыл бұрын
@@dennywinchel2348 the reason the racers are getting those numbers is also because they don't have to meet emissions when they are able to use off road products, so they are not limited. Depending on the state you live in you may be able to get away with more than someone in a place like California where the use the sniffer to test emissions

Reliability and warranty so the 131 numbers are different warranty gives game for me , and how much was the cost for the Zippers upgrades and how many places are there to go in case of problems , in the end it’s about more power and reliability hats off to the MOCO engineers making the 128 & 131 available for a factory engine upgrade these probably will be on production bikes in the future ride safe in eastern Tennessee

I understand, the warranty that comes with the Screaming Eagle can be comforting and it is great that the MoCo is offering a kit like this. However the former 117 stage 4 kit has earned a reputation of not being very reliable. Search the forums, they will tell you. Its good to be covered by warranty, but its better to be built for reliability. If you can avoid the trouble by installing quality parts, i'd rather spend my time riding than waiting for repairs. Thanks for the comment talking rock, I will be making another video going over the complete parts list and cost.

Ok Tall, I liked the comparison you did here. I have a '18 FLHX and I haven't been completely sold on the 128/131 kits and now that they just introduced a 119/122. I need to see the numbers on the 119 kit to see where my gains would be over my 107 which has a H-D Stage 1(full SE exhaust/wedge hi-flo air cleaner/ProStreet tuner) and I am averaging 45 miles (highway) a gallon before the fuel light comes on. I have seen a few people ask but I haven't seen your reply about your gas mileage on the 124. I work at a H-D dealership and I know the restrictions that Harley has to work under in regards to EPA but like you stated you went for the best bang for your money and I am thinking the same. Once again, what is your gas mileage with the 124 since this is your everyday rider.

The real issue is that Harley is still using a high flow cat in the head pipe and using their tuner which only tunes within EPA guidelines. Harley techs will tell you if you want real power out of their Stage kits use an aftermarket exhaust and aftermarket tuner. The downside is your warranty will immediately be voided if you change the head pipe or use a tuner other than Scream’n Eagle (thank you EPA). I want to see the numbers for the 131 kit with a D&D Billet Cat exhaust and aftermarket tuner. You also need factor in the type of cam as it too can majorly influence power and torque numbers.

It's all in the TUNER & CAM!!! Take the 131 SE kit and put an aftermarket cam and tuner and watch out. Bigger valves, ports, cam profiles and a tuner that allows more timing and fuel and you will have great power increases. Basic Hot rodding is all it is. Harley has to be EPA compliant and the after market is more than likely selling kits that are " for offroad or competition use only" . Eventually the EPA will do the smack down on Zippers and many of the other companies just like they have, to Harley and Vance and Hines already!!

Good video and information. I had the 114 stage IV installed in my bike when I bought it new two years ago. What I didn’t realize then was that the stage IV was meant for high RPM use and the extra power doesn’t come in until you are higher in the power band. It’s an 800lb bike and I ride two up a lot. My wife and I don’t ride hard and fast like we did twenty years ago. Warranty will be up in two weeks, not extending it. Will probably do a new tuner thus month, possibly a zippers cam next winter. Ride safe.

I like both the SE and Zipper performance upgrades. The numbers are always subjective. Upgrades always have a contingency. Do the research, ride a buddies bike, as questions. Find the performance arch that works for your riding style. You may not need all that HP because you don’t goose it to 5500rpms or don’t cruise at 100mph. You might like a torque monster that gets you to your performance band quicker and cruising at 88mph. Reliability is the key. Unless you can afford a daily and play toy that is. Either way, keep it rollin guys.

IMHO, a really important difference is in the torque and power curve delivery points--your 124 kit comes on much earlier and stays high through the "street" zone, whereas the HD kit is a higher RPM kit, more in the "racer-boy" zone. For me, and I would guess a large portion of us, the Zipper 124 kit delivers more where it is used around town (1500-2500 rpm) AND for passing etc on the highway (3000-3500 rpm). You made the better choice. The other big difference, of course, is that the HD kit IS EPA certified and warrantied when bought and installed in time by a dealer (incl'g Calif as I recall if you use their mufflers which relocate the catcons).

I have a 2020 Ultra Limited and I had put 5000 miles on my bike when I had the 131” kit put on mine here by Bert’s Barracuda Harley-Davidson here in Pinellas Park, FL. I rode it for a few weeks before taking it to Bert’s Black Widow Harley-Davidson in Port Charlotte, FL for a Dyno. I by the way left it stock-ish by using the Harley-Davidson tunes for the Big Bore Kit, anyway It peaked at 4400 RPM as that is where it hit 110 MPH. At 110 MPH it was putting out 121.5 HP and 140 ft lbs torque. A couple weeks later it started to act up, I limped it home in the middle of the night beach ride, and didn’t want to risk any further damage if it was damaging it. Next day I rode it over to the shop and it was riding fine, I was told it may have been an electrical issue and to keep riding it. I parked it for a week, then on July 1st was casually riding to work (70MPH) and it shut down on me. I got it to the shop next day and the rear cylinder had seized up causing damage to the rear jug & piston. It is still at Bert’s Barracuda Harley-Davidson waiting on Harley to send my parts... BTW, I only had 700 miles on the 131” when it seized up and it was 1/4 qt low on oil... I am hoping to get back on her again soon, the sad part is, that I never got to open it up and see what she could do! The ones that did were the Mechanic that installed the kit, the General Manager, & the Dyno Operator... I will advise this, IF you are thinking of getting the 131” kit, even with the Harley cooling fan behind the back jug and the radiator it still puts off a tremendous amount of Heat, it’s a lot hotter than that of the 114”!!!...

Their reputation and quality of work keeps customers coming back. Now, which one would i chose for my 25k harley??? Its a no brainer! Zippers or any other quality shop over HD mass production parts.

Not to stick up for Harley (. I have zippers heads on my 103 ) but it’s the tuner that sets your 124 above that 131. Since H-D got sued by the EPA and are not allowed to sell the race tuner only street tuner those will be the results. Now if someone were to put a powervision on the 131 And a experienced tuner the 131 would put out much better numbers I’m sure

Great video. Many people really dont understand that the screaming eagle stuff by Harley is hobbled by the EPA. My mechanic laughs when I we discuss 110 kits vs the new M8's because the 110 kits absolutely blow away the M8's in performance.

Thanks for the video. As someone who is considering this stuff right now, I think you're giving good info and good advice. However, as some others have noted, you're comparing a maxed-out 124 build with a crippled 131 build. The numbers you see for the H-D 131 have stock exhaust headers with cat converters and EPA-friendly tunes. If someone did with those kits what Zipper did with your kit, optimize the cam, exhaust and tune, no telling what the numbers could be. But it's really difficult to find anybody who's done that, because the people buying 131 right now tend to want to maintain their warranties. It may take a year or more before we start seeing the full power of the 131 show up in KZbin videos.

duane howard the new challenger dynos on average around 115 torque and 105 HP. My new road glide with a woods cam made 119 TQ and 109 HP. If Harley were to swap the cam out and tune it differently, the bikes would make the same numbers. Challengers numbers aren’t that impressive once you see that it is 11:0 compression, liquid cooled, and basically the same displacement as the 107 M8.

Love Harleys and owned one for 11yrs. I came to the point that it didn’t make sense to spend 5 or 6 thousand dollars on mods when I could buy a used 18 year old Yamaha with 135 hp at the wheel that weighs less than 500 lbs for 2700 dollars and keep my Electra Glide for long trips.

I think the results of this comparison would be wildly different if the SE 131 had the same RedShift 472 or maybe the 468 cam in it, along with an upgraded Cam plate and oil pump. The new SE 131 package uses the same SE 515 cam which comes on the stage IV kits... which is why I switched to the RedShift 468 on my 117 Fatboy.

Chris Barr - I stand corrected... Good point. However, there’s still no magic that would allow “Tall’s” 124 to dramatically outperform a 131 beyond the usual suspects of a more aggressive cam, upgraded air intake/exhaust, upgraded injectors or the tune itself. My point is... all else being equal, the 131 should slightly outperform. In his comparison, all else ISN’T equal. If that were the case, I’d brag about my 117 being able to outperform the new 131. But I won’t bc I have several upgrades that dictate that I should be making more hp and tq.

Whatever Harley builds MUST meet EPA standards and also carry a warranty!! So the power numbers are definitely gonna be lower than aftermarket. A good dealership will have a lot of dyno data on what parts will and won't produce the best bang for your buck. Some will have their own packages and upgrades to offer. It's not about just grabbing a catalog and bolting things on. Spend a lot of time asking questions and find a dealership that can answer them and you feel comfortable with. If the change does work, then it shouldn't stay on your bike.

Warranty is always a concern people have and that is understandable. If you take your bike to a reputable shop or HD dealer they will stand behind their work. Catastrophic failure on a big build is very expensive, been there. With that said going to aftermarket has and always will be the key to more power. It’s not just HD, it’s cars trucks atvs snowmobiles etc. The manufactures build things to make the masses happy and able to go down the road. Aftermarket builds things now days to make you happy but add the grin from ear to ear like a kid on Christmas plus the reliability is very good as well. I will take your 124 all day long and twice on Sunday before I would even entertain that 131. SE 131 is for the guys who want the big motor but didn’t do the research to see what they could of had for the same money. But hey it says 131 so it must be a killer bike.

It's good to compare side by side power and parts..You definitely want the best bang for your buck...124 wins hands down!! I suppose it all comes down to the warranty issue..The 131 has to be tuned down for the HD warranty..Im sure you could wake it up a bit..I'd like to see some aftermarket tunes on the 131..Try and do an episode on that..would be very interesting to see what people are getting out of their 131's when they play around with different parts, exhaust, etc..

While I support The Motor Company and want them to succeed in the face of some serious competition from Indian. The fact is it comes down to bang for the buck and, at what time can you do the upgrades. 60 days is not alot of time to come up with the extra dough for a warranty covered modification. I think Harley ought to give us more time. After all, it's their bike and their kit, what's the problem ? Anyway, you covered the issue fairly and honestly so, well done. PS, I'm only a couple of hours from Zippers and cant be warranted anyway, Hmmm.

It’s apples to oranges because the aftermarket doesn’t have to meet the EPA guidelines. Now take that same 131 and use non EPA compliant tuner and cams and you’ll see a huge difference. Fuel Moto just did a 131 build using all Harley SE parts and the numbers were 127 HP 139 TQ rear wheel. They are now in the process of trying new cams and a aftermarket tuner. That being said I agree to go with aftermarket if you’re out of warranty or warranty doesn’t concern you.
