2022 - 131 Stage 4 Kit 5,000 Mile Review. What I don't like about it....

Welcome back to 2147 Crew. In this video I review the Harley Davidson Screamin' Eagle Milwaukee-Eight Engine Stage IV Kit - 114CI or 117CI to 131CI. I have successfully reached 5,000 miles. Without issues with the belt, engine, transmission, clutch, or primary. It is installed on my Harley Davidson 2022 Road Glide Special in Redline Red.
I also go over several things that I've noticed over the 5,000 miles that I don't like.

The cam is the biggest limiting factor in the 131's. They usually make around 150/150 with a better cam and 2-1 pipe.

Yep I got the 512 cam and I’m making 151/154 with 2-1 and rienhart 4.5” slips. Well worth the extra $300 for the upgraded cam. AD FARROW north did the work and those guys know there stuff. I shopped around for a month checking out different shops and technicians and they had the highest skilled techs and most up to date dyno equipment. I’m happy with it and so far money well spent. Cost was close to $9000 out the door.

I got a Road Glide ST did my 131 and yes I had a starting problem like you said! Runs great but 1 time it didn’t want to start!

I think I figured it out. When that happens again. Walk away from it far enough to where the FOB isn't recognized by the bike. Then walk back and turn it on. That's what I've done and it worked. Check out my other vids, I now have a turbo system on my bike.

I took my bike from Aberta Canada to Moonshine Harley and got a 128 done with 138HP and 144TQ and that was easy to get. Take a look at their 135 motor and you wont look back. I rode mine 6,000 miles back home and no issues at all. Those guys know their stuff, looking forward to seeing what you choose.

You have some really good points. I was gonna go with the 131 kit also but after doing a little bit more research I felt like I'm not getting my money's worth especially if you're paying that much money and they're leaving a rev limiter on it. So this summer I decided that I'm gonna go with zippers performance. It seems like zippers performance gives you the kind of horsepower numbers that you're looking for with the kind of money that you're spending.

I did the SE 128 complete warranty build and just as you said I couldn't beat a 114 with a aftermarket tune and cam. Now I went to moonshine harley and redid a bunch of the kit and tuner. Sweet honey BBQ what a difference 147hp and 137 tq and It's no joke. I agree with your opinions 👍

I did a Fuel Moto 128 kit and got the exact same numbers. What cam did you go with? I did SS550 and its numbers look like a table top straight up to 135 tq and climbs to 147 tq

When people ask me I always say unless you are really that worried about keeping your warranty, like you got the 7 year plan or something, if you’re going to open it up and spend that money, don’t put SE stuff in there. I just have a Wood 22XE along with a few other associated upgrades and my aftermarket stage 2 job on my 114 will hang with or walk a lot of SE big bore kits. If I was going in there I wanted the most I could get for what I was spending and I only have a few months left on warranty anyway.

I got the 131 kit on my 2020 Street Glide and 3 State Harley down in Bossier City Louisiana and mine took the record down here with 144-HP and 160-ft lbs Torque And that is some Badass Numbers

I was in your same boat. I went with power vision tuner. Cycle rama 540-2 cam. Fuel moto 2-1 rtx full length pipe better air cleaner. And it's night and day difference. Was 118 hp and 138 torque. Now it's 147 hp and 159 torque. It has 150 torque at 3000 rpm. Clutch was slipping on dyno is why it didn't make in the 150 s hp. Next is bigger injectors and cnc ported throttle body. Hoping for high 150s hp and mid 160 torque.

Beautiful bike, I had the 131 installed on my 22 roadglide special the only problem I’ve been noticing since Harley tuned it after the breakin period is a lot of heat soak when I’m in traffic, and last night when it got hot downtown I felt like it was about to turn off so I parked it and let it cool down for about 30, 40 minutes then left downtown because of that and took the freeway home, other than that it’s smooth

What’s weird is the temperature light never came on the times it got really hot not even the check engine light came on last weekend but the next morning it was gone and the codes had something to do with the throttle body area

The bike looks awesome. It's unfortunate that your power is limited based upon the bug $$$ spent. That Harley EPA tune is holding it back. But that's the trade off....warranty or big power. I have a 128 no counter balancer, welded and Ballenced flywheel, on and on. Big dollar build put out near 150 HP & 150 tq. They had it to 166 on dyno. Took it up to 7000 on the pulls. No limiter. 2019 Roadking Special....

It’s a good kit over all. However, if you want to make more reliable power. You’d have to go after market cam chest kit.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the 131. I have two takes of my own; the first being resale. In 2012 the stock engine was a 103…and that was a big deal. 10 years later we are at a 114. So, at that rate, it should take 10 years before the 131 is stock. But sell your bike with a 131 in 5 years and you will get a good return on your upgrade investment. Lastly, the cams in the 131 kit are kinda crap. Going aftermarket on those won’t void the warranty, to my understanding.

The dealer I bought from says that it has to be a SE cam to keep the warranty with them. Your mileage may vary.

I got a stock 2021 routine special. I put the 30-30 10 lifters. Portland parlor CNC 55 mm throttle body and tab performance head pipe with the 5 inch slip on zombies and I make 126 and a 139. Power the torque

Nice build! I have same bike with the same wheels and an S&S 128. my numbers are lot higher. You need to do 2 things, get a new cam and have it Dyno tuned. I can't tell you what cam to get because I don't know where you like your power but there is lots of info out there.

Thunder max is the only common tuner I've found that doesn't have a speed limiter however you need an exhaust with 18 mm bungs

HARLEY DEALS WITH THE EPA. Reason why the speed is limited. If you get it dynoed somewhere else? Have them up the speed limiter. My bike revs to 6500 rpm. Top speed? Don't know yet. Still breaking in the motor. 129 fuel moto build. S&s 550 cam, S&SRoller rockers, 6.2 injectors, HPI 62mm throttle body and intake. Manifold, S&S cam chest kit. Thundermax tuner, roller rockers. Fuel motto stage A heads with 580 valvesprings. My tire breaks loose at 55 mph. No dyno tune yet. Breaking in motor.

The tuner is needed to increase the amount of fuel delivered. Bikes run on a fuel map that is an open loop....even though there are o2 sensors they are narrow band and don't really monitor for anything other than "out of range" so unlike a car that constantly monitors incoming air via a map sensor and out going exhaust via o2 sensors and is constantly adjusting the amount of fuel.....a bike runs on a preprogrammed map.....so you'll always need a tuner...unless you take it to a dyno that can flash your ecu....also harley has to meet epa standards....so you'll never get as much power out of any harley dealer that installs harley parts.....all harley stuff even if it's screaming eagle or performance parts still have to be epa compliant.....aftermarket parts don't have to meet those standards and if you read the fine print on almost any aftermarket performance part there's something saying "for race or off road use only "(this especially applies to intake, exhaust and tuners) i noticed this on everything I bought for my street glide.

Okay where to start. -A tuner maps the gas and air flow among other things to get your engine running at peak performance -Harley has had rev limiters for years, it's part of their agreement with the EPA to prevent further lawsuits which is also why your horsepower is so low for the size of the engine -131 Derby covers aren't included because once you go with an upgrade like this people tend to have preferences on what they want -Pretty much all push rod tubes for Harley minus a very select few are chrome it's a standard -The Harley 131 is one of the least reliable 131ci engines out there so when you go after market you will be pushing it to fail much quicker, another reason Harley reigns in the HP and TQ -Once you go after market say goodbye to your warranty, so when the engine does fail Harley will not repair it under warranty

I just finished a 131se build on a 2019 fatbob that I purchased used and with 2k ish miles on it and a stage se torque kit on it at the time (2021). Rode it for 10k miles and had a blast on it. Over winter (Alaska) I did the stage 4 and produced 139hp and 149tq. However there’s a 2021 fatbob in our shop (I work for Harley in anchorage) with a stage 4 that is identical to mine only producing 129hp amd 138tq. I just picked up a 2020 fltrxs with 131 coming for it along with all the goodies, suspension, aftermarket cam, and tuner (along with the se tuner to keep my 4yr esp) there’s a work around 🤫

Put a Woods or S&S cam in it and then tune with PowerVision. Then have it dyno tuned. That will immediately bump those numbers. An HPI throttle body and high flow injectors would help.

Man I thought my bike had something wrong with it. I have mine also punched out with a cam. When I hammer on it and get up to a certain rpm and speed the bike would want to slow down some and just rev. Until I let off the gas then it wanted to go. I didnt think About it hitting the rev limiter.

Good luck on the pressed together flywheels, and when they start to shift. They got rid of the Timken tapered roller bearing on the output shaft drive side since 03, or 04 not sure. Stock with aftermarket pipes and a tune, would make it a good reliable machine. They have a patent on a new air-cooled engine with solid crank and side by side connecting rods with babbitt bearings, 45 degree for that beloved sound and unit construction should be a great improvement!!! Plus 4 valve, pushrods, vvt. I hope it's the replacement for m8. Look at Harley lawsuits for putting aftermarket,it will void warranty.

It's good power from the factory but with HD they have to abide by emission regulations and ect that's why something with those CI's doesn't make ridiculous power. When you go aftermarket you will be able to get the power you want.

I'm trying to map out a game plan, i currently have a heritage classic 114. I want to get a smaller bike for around town and a big bagger for my big trips. A big touring road glide like this. The path he's going would make it not good for long rides right? Fuel economy is cut and riding experience wouldn't be as good. He's going for full rip? I pictured having a bobber or something and make that my loud, fast, mean bike. Does that make sense or what am i missing with seeing everyone going all out with their road kings/glides

It’s all personal preference. In my opinion. I opted for the road glide and decided to make it my everything bike. It’s been good to me and it does great in town and it long trips. Hope this helps

Your playing with fire! ha You should have thought it through. Now your already 5K in the hole. Fair warning...seen many of people (not people on youtube) throw some aftermarket stuff in these 131's and end up having issues after a few runs and that's just the motor. We haven't even got into primary and trans. Your asking for a bike that will leave you stranded monthly if not weekly if not done right. Split the cases get the right internals or I wouldn't even touch it because you'll be doing more wrenching/shop time than riding.

Harley do make one. It’s was 85 after taxes in NY. I bought a 21 Road Glide Limited I thought it was a fake 131 because it didn’t have the 131 Derby cover. Did research and found out the previous owner did in fact install the 131 but did not purchase the derby cover.

I got all 131 badges and black chrome push rod covers an tapped cover plus cnc ported heads intake and throttle body with kit..dark horse bottom end i got everything u said u didn't u didn't take 2 right dealer.. made 155 rwhp 161 torque oh and had my needle berried at 120 its a 19 cvo.. AND 1 YEAR WARRANTY will be at harleys rally on milwaukee in starts 3 days will take different bike every day

Must be tuned with power vision 4. You MUST have the screaming eagle air intake. You’re losing 10 horsepower at the wheels running stock intake. Once broken in have CR512 cam installed you will be at 150 horse and 160 torque. You will need VP AIM clutch and new compensator.

If you’re on it all the time. I was getting 32 mpg. But that’s really getting on it for a while. Normal riding I would say about 38ish or so. Depending on your tune and RPM limit, tires.

@@2147crew Thank you for clarifying. I'm a Ducati Diavel owner and I'm thinking to couple it with a HD "steel horse". I'm sniffing around between an "old" Cross Bones (planned max Stage 1 on this baby) or some new comers like Low Rider S 117, Low Rider ST 117, FatBoy 114 and Breakout 117. Willing to have some punch out of one of them and Stage 4 seems to be the way to go. Thanks again and enjoy the ride in the land of the free.

@@N3tTurbino no problem. It all depends on what you want the bike for. Personally, I prefer the road glide because they block the wind better and the bars don’t turn with the fairing weight of the street glide.

I have two bikes with the 131 kit…. The S&S is probably better… are you having an issue with heat? One of my my bikes has less airflow, and the right gets super hot….

Two 131’s.. very nice. When I had the 131 it was getting a little hotter but nothing bad. I rode it to Sturgis like that. When I had the Trask Turbo stage 2 installed and rode it back. It got hotter but again, nothing crazy.

I already had a dark horse crank, compensator, and recluse clutch put in with the 131 kit. Very excited all over again. Good luck with your builds brothers. Lots of potential with these 131s.

@@Hellbentbiker you got a nice set up! What difference did you notice with the upgraded comp and clutch?

@@2147crew the crank and pistons that came with the kit were balanced together and there is less vibration. I should never have an issue with the bottom end. The motor is so smooth. The comp makes everything even more smooth (no clunk when putting it in gear or shifting). It’s so smooth it’s actually kinda weird at first. The clutch was just insurance and forethought I guess. Very little difference. I did the clutch basket as well. It should handle the new set up with ease as well. I agree with many of your points. I actually did the black tappet covers and pushrod tubes/ rocker box and bolts/hardware. I love the look of your bike. Really nicely done and not over done either. That fender and wheels are killer I’m hoping by the end of this riding season my cam and everything will be done. Check out the tts 250. I also had the cr512 , woods 77x and s&s 540 on my short list. They all seem like top performers for our engines but I ultimately decided on the tts 250. It’s all never ending but lots of fun.

I have a 1:31 all you have to do is take off that head pipe which will cut down heat considerably you will not believe it and add power vision tuner my Harley-Davidson in Florence South Carolina had done mine and then you will feel the 131 that's a promise you'll be able to pick the wheel up you're 131 is limited I have Reinhardt headers on and power Vision tuning no limiter the bike screams I promise you satisfaction that's Blackjack Harley-Davidson in Florence South Carolina give them a call I promise you won't be sorry see you feed the hog
