In Norway there's a common belief/rumour that says Alfred Nobel was accidentally presumed dead before his actual death, when they misprinted it in his local newspaper. Alfred discovered he wasn't very popular among the people when he saw all the bad things they wrote about him after "his passing", saying he was a terrible person for benifiting war with his invention of dynamite. Since he did not want to be remembered only for war, he decided to create the peace prize and leave something good behind in the world... at least that's what my seventh-grade teacher told me :P

A good example is the award to Le Duc Tho, who turned down the award because of that very reason: there was no peace in Vietnam yet. Another example is the award to Obama. Where was the peace that he actually achieved? Given the current state of the Middle East, the Committee definitely jumped the gun.

While the purpose of the video was primarily about the "how" of the prize, it seems odd not to even mention the controversies around the awards. There are several recipients that are believed to be simple unworthy of the award, and the committee has been accused of using the award more as a political platform than a recognition of accomplishment. Avoiding these realities of "how" the prize works made the video come across as less an educational piece, and more a saccharin grade school booster lesson. I am not often disappointed in these videos, but I am this one.

@Mayank Cartoon I agree on how future developments are unpredictable and I don't blame the nobel committee for having recognized her when they did. The award cannot be rescinded, however, as conscionable human beings we need to acknowledge her failures. She is a disappointment of epic proportion, a failure in the face of peace and an apostle of double standards. While my heart goes out to the people of Myanmar, I can only endorse what Martin Luther King said: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly. If only Aung and greater Myanmar understood what he meant, the plight of the Rohingyas wouldn't have culminated, in some form or other, into a collective social degeneration and moral corruption of an entire nation. When you say corrupt do you mean when Obama won the Nobel price?

How so? What makes it corrupt?
@MrFuntzel4 жыл бұрын
Its literally been corrupt since its inception. What do you expect from a prize who literally made his living off selling dynamite and profiting of war wherever he could.
@tenacious_takakumi26804 жыл бұрын
Kitten Hermit That’s literally saying that for example Haber and Bosch were criminals because they invented an easier way to produce ammonia. The Haber-Bosch method made it easier to produce fertilizers, which helped millions of people to SURVIVE. Although the production of explosives was also made easier, it wasn’t the inventors’ goal to use their method for war purposes.
@MrFuntzel4 жыл бұрын
@@tenacious_takakumi2680 And you have just stated exactly why its nothing like Haber and Boschs case because Nobels intention was very much to sell Dynamite as a Weapon of war and did so the moment he was able to and continued to do so until his death. In his case the use and sale of Dynamite as a tool was always secondary because, especially given the time period, it wasnt nearly as profitable. So to claim Nobels intention wasn't for use his invention to be used as a weapon of war is quite frankly ridiculous and uniformed.

I still believe in the value and the purpose of the Nobel prize. And I still greatly admired some of those who were nominated for this prize. However it’s worth knowing that this system of nominating people for the Nobel Prize needs to be reform and change. Because I can’t stand how some people were nominated because of politics and for political gain.

may you don't know the 126.wikipedia are saying 892. 5:13 892 individuals Between 1901 and 2017, the Nobel Prizes and the NobelMemorial Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 585 times to 923 people and organizations. With some receiving the Nobel Prize more than once, this makes a total of 892individuals (including 844 men, 48 women) and 24 organizations

I think the peace thing is because when his brother died, the media thought it was Nobel himself, and wrote how horrible he was for making dynamites. This actually did happen and Nobel probably made the whole Nobel prize to redeem himself to the world.

are you going to ignore the fact that Hitler, Stalin and Mussolini were nominated for the Nobel peace prize.
@doubled64908 жыл бұрын
anyone could be nominated, but not everyone can get the prize...
@tobiasdahmen85838 жыл бұрын
Well, they were nominated and did not get the prize. If you listen to the video, you will see that it is not the committee that decides who gets nominated but a wide array of different institutions and people. So I don't think this is an argument why the Nobel peace price might be worthless.

TED-Ed, Gandhi, while nominated, never actually won the Nobel Peace Prize, as displayed in the graphic. Here are the Indian Citizens that actually won the peace prize - R. Pachauri and K. Satyarthi. There have been non-citizen laurates like Mother Theresa of Calcutta whose work in India led to her reception of the award.
@Zaidsohail123456 жыл бұрын
Ted ed, a correction on the video. After doing a little research, the American Friends Service Committee (the Quakers) who had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize were late in nominating Dr. King Jr. The Committee used Swedish Parliament's nomination to award Peace Prize to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Thank you for your input. It doesn't seem to concur with the information we got from the Nobel Institute. We would like to find out more about it, where did you read this? :)
@Zaidsohail123456 жыл бұрын
NobelPeaceCenter Hi! I read it on their Facebook page when I went to research more about the nominators. I can provide the link as well.
@@Zaidsohail12345 Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. I now see where the confusion lies. The nomination was registered as valid in 1964 (and is therefore rightfully mentioned in the video), even though it was originally sent for the 1963 Nobel Peace Prize, as you pointed out. I'm glad we could clear this up, it's such an interesting detail in the nomination process. :)
