How does this new release stack up? | Benriach 16 REVIEW

I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Benriach distillery today. This is their newest release, just out last year. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

Glad to see you've got around to the 16! Absolutely love this bottle for its unique nose and flavor. Super heavy musty malty cookie dough forward, and I feel like this whisky is Benriachs signature at its most raw. And I agree with you, it would be even better if it had just a little more abv.

Benriach is one of my favourite distilleries for the price. I have a Benriach 14 yr cask edition (single barrel) cask strength (124.8 proof) finished in Oloroso sherry casks and it's to die for

Thanks for trying this whisky out so I don't have to. I've had their peated 12YO which was ok but this distillery needs to find a new course before I get interested enough to buy any more bottles from them.

Hi Geoff. Had the earlier ( with the purple coloured distillery picture)version of this, remember it being a bit too soft and mild but don’t remember getting any peat note’s though. Don’t think I’ll be buying this though, although for around €70 it’s not a bad price. Slàinte Geoff 🥃

Haven't had it yet, but I'll be interested to try it. I used to absolutely love the old peated 10 yo Benriach Curiositas, which was one of my gateway whiskies. Really helped to show the difference between mainland peat and Islay peat. Plus it totally morphed after a few drops of water. So that was fun. None of the more recent Benriachs have thrilled me that much, unfortunately.

I didn't even know this existed! Such a shame to keep it at 43% when one of the biggest selling points of Benriach for me is the 46%abv. Oh well at least it tastes good. Cheers Geoff!

Not tried this. However, I did pick up a 1 litre Benriach Smokey Quarter Cask, (46%), at an airport, (I believe it’s a travel exclusive), for around £50 and must admit to really enjoying it. Smoky and sweet. I’d recommend it and would buy it again.

Years ago (long before Brown Foreman destroyed the brand) my buddy and I were at the Craigellachie Hotel sampling some whiskies. I spotted the BenRiach 20 YO high on a shelf and we tried it. It was tremendous. So many memories of great BenRiach bottlings. Oddly the distillery visit itself wasn't that interesting. Maybe my expectations were too high. So sad to see such a great brand die.

Not tried the 16yo yet. I recently bought a non-peated 8yo Benriach IB from Master of Malt for less than £50 which is 59.9% ABV and it’s fantastic. I do like the Smoke Season which is cask strength and really good stuff.

I think it's 100€ on my market. I don't get why it has lower abv than smoky 10 for example. I would love to try it, but I don't know if I want to pay that much money. Thanks for video 📸

I bought/tried the 4-pack of 10's and 12's and didn't think the value/price ratio was justified for a full bottle and kinda dismissed further exploration. You've got me reconsidering another look at the 16 year but over in CA., this is a $120 bottle that a reputable alcohol pusher has permanently marked down to $89 US (until their stock runs out) For me a $90 bottle needs to have a reasonable chance of scoring a 3.8/5 which should be about an 86/100. I don't know. I have an even tighter budget this year.

Got me curious about the travel retail Quarter Cask I picked up earlier this year. NAS, Bourbon Cask, 46% ABV and coloured.

I haven't tried this one. Only a few retailers are stocking this in my market and it is overpriced. I have tried the unpeated quarter cask and the peated cask strength batch 2 which I thought were good for the price I paid. I picked them up on special. The peated cask strength tastes a bit young though. Cheers!

That fresh virgin oak maturation is just silly and it is silly in every other dram, that uses it. I like the peated ten, but it would have been a better whisky without the virgin oak maturation. It is sweet, nice, little bit peaty... And then you get the bitter peppery punch from the virgin oak. I mean... Why? Btw great review! :)

I've covered most of the widely-available Kavalans and Omars. The stuff that's market-specific I tend to skip, as most of my audience isn't local. I will certainly come back to both brands again down the line, as well as any other local bottling that I think people might. be interested in. Cheers. 🥃

I haven’t been a fan of Glenfarclas. I find it to be way too simple with not much notice of Sherry despite you saying it is a Sherry bomb. Maybe my bottle is off. Unfortunately, I can’t find it near me.

They're around, but I tend to review widely-available bottles. IBs are often very limited or market specific. 🥃

Glenallachie 10 year CS are very solid. As is the Bunnahabhain 12 CS if you can find them. Both should be cheaper than the RedBreast.
