Very well explained! I’m sure there are lots of angler’s out there who’ve been fishing for years and don’t or didn’t know the reasons behind some conditions being more favourable for certain tactics or even certain areas of their lakes. Probably because I think there is a lack of material out there in this area of our sport. Quality video as always, and well put across, keep it up 👍🏼

Well last week i had 5 carp all around 10 lbs + on the bottom and lost 3 (small hook) , never had carp before from this particular pond its always been tench.... i do believe the Low Pressure did play a big part in this. 18 / 9 °C Passing clouds. Humidity: 80% Barometer: 991 mbar WSW Wind: 28.585 mph

I've never been overly convinced that air pressure directly affects fish behaviour as the swim bladder is not a sealed system and is constantly adjusting to maintain neutral buoyancy relative to atmospheric pressure, this isn't to say its wrong but perhaps misinterpreted. You may well have seen this swim bladder adjustment in action many times and just not realised or attributed the behaviour to other things. The main behaviours associated swim bladder adjustment are fish coming to the surface and gulping air by either slurping or head and shouldering to swallow air and add buoyancy or alternately releasing bubbles (rarely more than a few small bubbles so hard to spot) to lower the buoyancy, there is also evidence to suggest that fish leaping and slamming back into the water is a way of suddenly forcing air out of the swim bladder allowing the fish to descend although this is difficult to prove due to the circumstances. This behaviour and anatomy is consistent and can be observed across all cyprinids found in the UK, non cyprinid species such as perch have a sealed system that is reliant of gas permeation through a membrane so they are more affected by atmospheric pressure change and will take longer to adapt to changes. In the opening sentence I suggested that the correlation between air pressure and fish location was perhaps being misinterpreted and I say this because of the likely weather conditions that come with both highs and lows. When you get high pressure you generally get clear skies and a lack of wind which will allow the sunlight to warm the surface layers much more rapidly, fish being cold blooded and reliant on external heat sources will of course seek out the warmer water and come to the surface. This increase in temperature will also increase the amount of invertebrate activity in the upper layers with all the larvae rising to the surface to hatch into flies while its hot and still so the fish will hang around looking for a feed. A further look into fish behaviour while in the upper layers would encompass the heightened fear of predation from above and below but we'll leave that for another time. We should also take into account that fish are much easier to spot in the bright sunlight compared to overcast conditions so this sort of affects our inbuilt confirmation bias (attributing things to confirm our choices/assumptions are correct). So, in short - It is not the air pressure that directly affects the fish but more likely the prevailing weather conditions and temperature, the old adage is not incorrect but perhaps misinterpreted and shouldn't be taken as gospel.

Thxs for sharing this, so many permutations and factors of what is happening in there world that maybe not one correlation between the differnent atmospheric pressures determines where they may feel comfortable being, one day with the same conditions albeit a brighter moon or a hatch may not find them behaving as we think they would which is why I love this sport so much there is no definitive answer to any questions posed, just assumptions and general thoughts based on an anglers experience over the years.

My fascination with the freshwater environment has never dwindled, spent most of my life on the bank and a good 5yrs at college/uni learning all that I could about how it works and I know I'm still only scratching the surface in terms of unravelling its mysteries. The underwater environment and its residents are so alien to our own that it's no wonder that people struggle to get their heads around it at times and in a culture/industry that is full of old wives tails and marketing hype it gets even harder. In the end, any angler worth his salt knows that it's a mix of watercraft (the ability to find fish and predict their response), confidence (knowing that the method you are using will work if the fish are hungry), competency (being able to apply the method effectively) and luck (a mixture of the 3 previous points) that puts fish on the bank. Whether we catch because of or in spite of the choices we make remains to be seen but its these question that keep me returning again and again in full knowledge that I'll never know it all

I agree... don't subscribe to air pressure bladder theories. 1ft up or down in the water column equates to approximately 30mbar of pressure change.! Carp move up and down much quicker than this. Over much greater deeps. It doesn't make them uncomfortable... if it did they couldn't survive. Water pressure is huge in comparison to weather pressure effects. Its High Pressure/Low Pressure effects on general weather, temperatures, solar loading, bright verses dull, wind, these things effect Carp mobility and feeding far more than atmospheric pressure and pressure changes..

6ft and under I’d say it didn’t really make a lot of difference I’ve found but in 10ft and over I’d have the zigs on

I have always caught more in high pressure sunny days fishing the margins and stalking than fishing in low pressure. In low pressure windy conditions the fish just disappear and hide away and it looks rotten for a bite. The whole low pressure south westerly thing just doesn't produce for me!
@LEONBARTROPPCARPER7 жыл бұрын
I think it used to be you could put money on catching one in those conditions but with angler pressure and so many other factors it’s not always the case

I hope to strike up a friendly debate on this subject. My carp angling experience is limited. But looking at this from a scientific perspective, fish would feel pressure more from the change in depth, more so than atmospheric pressure. By example: 1 m/3.28 ft water depth = 9.81 kPa. 2 m/6.56 ft water depth = 19.6 kPa. Atmospheric pressure: 9.80 kPa - 10.40 kPa. The change in pressure is far greater in water than it is in the atmosphere. It would therefore have a negligible affect on the body of water and the fish’s swim bladder.
@LEONBARTROPPCARPER2 жыл бұрын
This is very interesting, would having a higher air pressure say 1020 not push the pressure in the waters surface and subsequently the body of water against a fishes body/Swim Bladder, the higher the atmospheric pressure the higher the pressure in the body of water would be?

Over the years surely the carp would of evolved with the pressure, I fished Farlows last year pressure was 1048 a guy with a Deeper saw the carp resting at 10 feet were the depth was 12 feet ?

It’s not an exact science Steve and I can only go on my findings there are so many permutations and other things going on in their world that goes against what we think we know
@millwallfan063 жыл бұрын
That’s a very high pressure so adds up to what he was saying that the higher the pressure the further up the water they might be, i long HookLink popped up a few ft would have put a bait in that area of depth ?
