Dear friends and followers welcome back to my channel! Today's video is about a very interesting topic, "How does WIFI work on airplanes?" I´m pretty sure many of you have seen advertisement for this new kind of service on aeroplanes. And a lot of airlines are suiting up the older and newer planes with WIFI antennas which are primarily installed on the upper part of the fuselage. If you´ve ever wondered what is below that little hump at the rear upper part of the fuselage, that´s the satellite antenna tracking Ka- or Ku-band satellites to receive and transmit your e-mails and other messages. And as you might not have known but airplane WiFi has been around since the mid 2000´s. At the time the ATG-system was state of the art, where you had two antennas installed on the airplane receiving and transmitting signals to land-based cell towers, very similar to the cellular network towers providing 4G LTE connection for your phone.
Over time the system advanced as the ATG system only had a narrow bandwidth allowing only 3 MBit/s at the consumer, therefore the satellite-based technology came to play. The Ku-band was introduced which was formerly used by the military. A ground-based satellite dish/antenna, sends an uplink towards a satellite, which reflects the signal towards the aeroplane. On top of the plane sits the bulky rotary antenna, which is comparable to your TV satellite dish attached to your home. It picks up the signal which is transmitted in the 11-20 GHz range, decodes the signal via the onboard server and sends to the onboard WiFi router. The speed was a lot faster than the ATG system but top out at 40-50 MBit/s. Unfortunately the system has a few disadvantages, one of them to mention is that the speed got slower and slower the more airplanes were transmitting and receiving over the same satellite. And the other setback is the large antenna, increasing the airplane weight and aerodynamic drag, therefore resulting in a higher fuel consumption. And who has to pay for that? YOU, the passenger!
Finally, I´ll mention the Ka-Band technology and what more is to come in the future.
I hope you enjoy this video!
Thanks for watching, all the best your "Captain" Joe

@Captain Joe, You mentioned Megabytes per second at 2:00 but the illustration show Mbit/s which meant that will be Megabit per second. Both terms has drastic difference. For example a 100 megabit per second connection is approx 12.5 MB/S (Megabytes per second). Would you be able to clarify please?

I like how detailed your videos are. Sometimes I learn something even from the most simple questions. So questions: Airlines prefer 2 engine airliners more than 4 engined planes, is it a matter of cost and maintenance? Do pilot trainings around the world different? Are there certain airports that certain pilots are not allowed to land/take-off without more training? What do most airline pilots/flight attendants do if they quit the airline job? Are there differences between flying into a country where the ATC are private vs government controlled? What foods do the different international airlines serve in coach, in first class (must mention air France)? In flight, the pilots are in command, on the ground, do the pilots have any authority such as calls on when airplane is not safe to fly outside of the usual checks, can the captain reject certain copilots, flight attendants? What are some of the most corageous things pilots/flight attendants have ever done that aren’t so well known like landing in the Hudson.

Nice video. I am the guy who traveled over 200k miles in two years to deploy the ORIGINAL ATG cellular system that is known today as GoGo Inflight. It started as a company called "AirCell", as an idea on a napkin in north Texas with Jimmy Ray... It started out as analog since that was the only thing available. We overcame three major things - AT&T and their constant whining about ground interference that never existed, turning the aircraft would drop the call and Learjets were bad for data during the TDMA years... 500 knots tends to screw up thanks to Doppler. CDMA saved the day. Iridium came later to solve the "we can't turn" issue. Handoff to the sky, then hand back to the ground. Pain in the ass. You welcome.

the added weight is not the factor. Due to gyroscopic forces of the spinning wheels, the handling of the aircraft would change dramatically in the most critical state of flight. Aircraft wheels are quite heavy, so the effect would be dramatic!

Because of mistakes ;-) Speaking about Mode 3/A that transmits location which was incorrect because location is calculated by the radar antenna rotation as azimuth and signal delay as range which gives a kind of polar coordinates, saying that transponder code is decimal while it is octal in fact (decimal is 0-9 and octal is 0-7) and so on... Hi Captain Joe... GREAT video. So a Megabyte is 1024 Bytes and is abbreviated as MB. Notice the upper case B. To digress a little, a byte is made up of 8 bits. Think of 8 1s or 0s such as 11010100. A bit is either on (1) or off (0). In storage, we look at the complete 8 bits as a unit - 1 byte - which would represent one character - e.g. the letter ‘A’. 1024 letter ‘A’s would take up the space of 1MB. But where transmitting is concerned, we refer to each bit (1/8th of a byte) because a bit can only be transmitted as a one (positive signal) or 0 (negative signal). Therefor, we track how many bits can be transmitted in a certain timeframe - I.e. bandwidth. If 1024 bits (1 or 0) can be transmitted in one second, it is referred to as 1 Mb (lower case b). So 71,680 (1024 * 70) bits is 70 Megabits or 70 Mb. So your graphs are correct. Your vernacular should be megabits, not megabytes. I hope my attempt to clear this up was successful. Thanks again for your great videos.

After reading all the expert comments and complaints about streaming speed and band width, this is going to sound an old-fashioned idea but, I promise, it is very practical: Books and Magazines? You can choose your own speed, they come in an endless amount of topics, they are silent, reusable and shareable, never run out of batteries, don't need power outlets, antennas or satellites, they work under any conditions for any amount of time.... they are the perfect excuse to disconnect from the world, relax and truly enjoy the flight! ☺️

Latency is generally not of significance to loading web pages, but can be of huge significance for playing a fast-moving interactive game, and really slow latency can be tricky for VoIP conversations.

I realize that this video is from 2017, but I was on a flight from JFK to AUH aboard Emirates A380 in 2017 and I was able to make a live video call to my wife back home using the onboard WiFi. The same happened recently on Turkish Airlines from JFK to IST this year. So, I guess the technology has come a long way since the making of this video. Oh, and I was using the free WiFi, too. Couldn't be happier. :)

Captain Joe, can you make video how the luggage can follow passenger eventhough they have tight connection ? If the passenger fail to make the connection, the luggage doesn't make it as well. How that works in the last minutes ?
@andis9076
@andis9076 6 жыл бұрын
I agree the concept in general but how the cargo guy decide each luggage should board or get removed from the plane when connection is tight? I know in normal scenario, they scan our ticket before boarding the plane, so they know I made to the airplane so luggage should get onboard as well. If the connection is only 20 min, passenger run to next gate which could be from terminal A to terminal B, the luggage basically has to "run" as well then ? How they can separate that luggage from other luggage quickly ? Assume the luggage guy is faster, how the luggage guy can determine if they should load it? wait until ticket got scan ? How about if the passenger is faster, and luggage guys is slow, the plane must wait until the luggage loaded as well ?
@SkyCharger001
@SkyCharger001 6 жыл бұрын
Most airports I've seen have cargo loading that is based on the boarded-passenger-count instead of the ticketed-passenger-count. This, among other things, reduces the risk of passengerless luggage-bombs. So, yes, even in those cases the plane will wait for your luggage, as it will be waiting for all the luggage it has to carry.

I hate to be that guy but it was far too annoying to ignore, especially being both an IT guy and a former satellite network engineer... It's MegaBITs, not MegaBYTEs... You were claiming speeds 8 times faster than they are And also Ku band theoretically tops out at 50Mbps, but you'd need to be basically flying in the stratosphere to get that!
@thecma3
@thecma3 6 жыл бұрын
p3rs0n42 haha I was thinking the same thing. I think it's very worth noting, though, that Gogo's 2Ku is claiming peak speeds of 200Mbps with the dual antenna and new modems. And it's not affected by weather like Ka :)

I flew on Air Berlin earlier this year (RIP) and the domestic transfer flight had Wi-Fi... and the landing page claimed some impressive transfer speeds, but also had an obscenely low cap, if I recall correctly it was around 300-500 megs. So you could watch that video for a few seconds before you've used up your data and cannot use any more. I expect there will be more data caps on more airlines so even if you're able to get enough speed to watch a video your allowance won't be big enough.

1:48 Correction: the speed isn't megabytes per second, it's megabits per second when converted to megabytes is 0.125 megabytes per second, it's sort of a scam because most people think 1 Mbps is fast but notice the small letter b in Mbps and Megabytes is MBps and Megabits is Mbps

An idea for future videos: Maybe a series like you had about the Concorde, but about more or less legendary airlines. You know, Pan Am, TWA, Braniff, or actually why not Air Berlin. Their history is certainly not as legendary as the others mentioned, but most definitely interesting as well.
