As a father of 3 boys, I always tried to instill as much sense of openness to their own interests in them as possible, and it has always saddened me when I see people treating girls or boys in ways that discourage them from following their interests, whatever they may be. I was in high school when I realized that anyone who is passionate about a subject can be a nerd, be it sports, movies, science, makeup, music, computers, chemistry, etc.
@LM-ek2hb2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree! And then someone turns around and FILTERS words so that only certain thoughts, questions and comments get through. Curiosity gets stifled, Inspiring content creators get less dimensional and the scientist wonders why they are considered a "nerd", when it's themselves that filter everything that doesn't fit their narrow view of how they want to be projected.

What a great video! I enjoyed her and you're approach to the interview. I'm 75 years old, so I grew up during the time when women were expected to stay at home and be moms. I watched this a few days ago and it’s been on my mind, I think I finally sorted out something concise: I’m a new male subscriber. I really enjoy the direction your channel has taken (jumping into “space journalism” as Dr. Becky says). The algorithm inundates me with white, male content creators. I make efforts to show that I’d rather be recommended a diverse base, searching for content from other countries or without regard to gender identity… I’d love to see more diversity in every system. Hopefully my subscription (and other efforts) to you and others I genuinely enjoy will influence the aggregated data so that the corporations feel a motivation to be more inclusive. I feel issues get debated until it becomes fiscally prudent only because so many are asking for a change. Ev’s were mocked for years until Tesla showed how it could work fiscally, now it’s the direction of all the major manufacturers. I’d be grateful if this inspires hope about your channels audience demographic; having so many male subscribers means that men want to hear from non-males in the field, and that that social bias is on the way out. 🤞

I found your channel after I was recommended your Scott Manley interview, and now I see you interview Dr. Becky, this is great! I would recommend trying to interview Tim Dodd from the channel Everyday Astronaut, or David Kipping from the channel Cool Worlds. I believe Dr. Becky has even had Kipping on her channel previously, but I know him mostly through discussions on John Michael Godiers Event Horizon channel (another fantastic channel). Issac Arthur would be an interesting pick as well. Edit: Two additional people I just thought of outside of physics and engineering are two mathematicians channels, Grant Sanderson of the channel 3Blue1Brown, and Matt Parker of the channel Stand-up Maths. Both highly interesting channels.

I have looked at the foam in my coffee cup, take the shape of galaxies over the years and figured that it was the surface tension of the liquid that caused such behaviors. I imagined that galaxies might have their own version of surface tension. If so, does space behave like a liquid, I wondered. Perhaps this line of research might answer some of my ponderings. Keep digging at the mysteries of physics. I love it as it feeds my curiosity.

I've always had many questions about black holes from the reading I've done. It is said that an object falling into a black hole the closer that object gets, the slower time is from the outside observers view up until the point time stops. So time stops from the perspective of the outside observer but not for the object, its perspective is that time never slowed. so with this being said, is this represent the information that is kept by the black hole? I'm also wondering listening to how hot the materials get as they spiral into the black hole, what happens to that "energy" when it crosses the event horizon? Is a black hole a giant battery storing up all that entropy? Is that where the laws of physics break down at the singularity? it would seem so if that superheated atoms become the singularity a supposed solid body would seem to cancel out the entropy of the atoms breaking the first law of thermodynamics, right?

I had to come back to this interview because it's rare that Dr Becky gives some insight into why her explanations are, IMO, so much better than most people: 17:25 Ellie: _"Well I think that that can be a struggle for most people, right? Maybe if you're really good at research & you're too technical with how you explain it, you lose your audience - you lose your people that don't understand what you're saying. So you obviously do a great job of breaking it down & helping..."_ Dr Becky: "I always say it's speaking a different language. Like when I speak to my colleagues, I'm speaking a completely different language to whether my mum, like: says to me "oh what did you do today?" Ellie: _"Yeah!"_ Dr Becky: "If I said to her the words that I say to my colleagues, like there would be complete like blank, you know? So I've always when ..you know.. when I would chat about science, I've always got her in mind to see what like 'oh would she understand what i was saying?' kind of thing."

So, supermassive black holes - how did they become so massive? The picture in my mind is, if you try to shove a lot of mass in, a lot of it blows outward quite energetically, and that inhibits the inflow. I don't think the universe has been around long enough for inhibited inflows to do the job. Dr. Becky has shown that we can't easily explain supermassive black holes through galactic mergers. So what's left? My gut feeling is that supermassive black holes are artifacts of the Big Bang, around which galaxies later coalesced. They've done some eating since, but they started out supermassive. I suspect, to explain how they formed, we'll have to dig deeper into what happened in the earliest instants of the universe. Alas, my gastro-intestinal tract doesn't have any physics accolades and is often wrong. Your mileage may vary! Fun conversation! Doc Becky is an excellent communicator, and so are you, Ellie. A talk between the two of you was great fun to witness.

51:00 Starlink has to happen because Caribbean, Mongolia, Nunavut etc need access. Hopefully SpaceX will make the manufacture of better fiber optics cheep enough to replace the satellites in 15-20 years. 40k satellites burning up over that time isn't something I'm comfortable with sustaining.
@Markle2k2 жыл бұрын
The refractive index will keep fiber optics slower in latency than going through a vacuum or through the atmosphere. It is inherent in how fiber optic cables work. But you can eat that latency cost for a lot of applications, especially if you can manage to first bootstrap your population’s economy and then pay for the fiber hookup to the global internet. Stringing fiber across the landscape and under the oceans is expensive.
