I think it’s important to mention that if you just let your hair form dreadlocks on its own thats not going to look good, you are going to have uneven sections and huge matted clumps throughout the hair. Dreads can free form but you still have to do some work on them.

Correction: you end up with matting not dreadlocks. Dreadlocks are a specific cultivation of this process into long threads and is actually a quite intensive hair care process. Matting is what happens when you cease hair care all together. The hair will form one whole clump or partion into 2 or 3 clumps. Over time oil and bacteria will break down the hair strands and it will fuse together. This is uncomfortable and ichy and often can cause scalp infections. Dreadlocks are kept quite clean and are not the same thing.

It's essentially the same process though. Matting is just another word for the interlocking of hair cuticles through heat and friction. It's the same phenomenon you see in felting. Depending on the hair texture the cuticles can be flat or raised, raised cuticles(textured hair) have an easier time interlocking. If you have flat cuticles you essentially have to damage your hair first in order to get it to form into dreadlocks. So how intense the process is really depends on your hair texture.

This is absolutely right. I had a close friend as a kid, who I didn't see for years. Won't go into details, but he went through some really serious shit.....and then he went through more.....and then he went through more....and yes, then he went through more. I've never seen or heard of someone as completely and thoroughly traumatized and depressed as he ended up, who didn't end up committing suicide, or hurting others and ending up incarcerated. When I found him, he had been living on the streets of Knoxville Tennessee for nearly 3 years (we didn't even live in the state of Tennessee) His hair, as you could imagine, was awful. Not as in it looks bad. As in a massive clump of hair that was quite literally so hard on the outside if you were to be hit by it, would be similar to being punched in the face. No bsm There was also 1 other clump, but it was more like a traditional dreadlock. It wasn't just that. If you were to take your fingers and rub them through your hair (kinda like how ppl try to comb their hair in a pinch using your hands) you couldn't get a single finger tip more than a few centimeters through any area of his hair. From the scalp, that is. It was bad. He's doing really well now, is married, working, and their trying for a baby right now (well, not RIGHT NOW, but you get it lol)

I went through a period where I was really sick for a long time and I had trouble taking care of basic things like brushing my hair or washing it often enough. But almost from my scalp to about 4 or 5 inches out and about 4 inches across was a hard, solid mass of hair. In other places there were more mats but they were smaller. But they were just as dense as the large one. I had always been told that “white people hair” can’t make dreads naturally, but when I was going through my hair, I remember telling my husband that it was like my hair was trying to turn itself in to one big loc. Anyway, the state of my hair was the push I needed to finally ask for help. My husband called around until he found a hair stylist that was able to get me in later that day, and I got my hair cut very short. A pixie cut was much easier for me to take care of and keep up with until things got better.
