The Cape Malay community is one of the most unique in the world. They were brought to Cape Town as slaves by the Dutch from Indonesia, Malaysia and Madagascar. After centuries of intermixing, influences from East and West and Islam, the Cape Malay community created a new bright identity, culture and community from a dark past. Salem learns about the history of the Cape Malay community through exploring their cuisine and cooking butter bean curry with Salwa and Sherif.

Brilliant video! I would say that it was how the Dutch colonial worked, it's the same in Indonesia, they didn't force the use of their language, instead they use Malay language to increase their competitiveness in an already established trade market here. Moreover, they also use this as one of their weapon and to differentiate themselves from the oppressed. They only allowed the rich and powerful Indonesians (usually of royal descendants) to go to school, where they would learn Dutch language. Therefore, only the colonials and rich Indonesian could speak Dutch language. This created classes among Indonesian people that served well into their Devide et Impera politics (divide and conquer).

The Cape Malay identity exposes the failure of racial identity. Malay people are simply Muslims of diverse ethnicities living in one place. The racialisation of people is a crime against our humanity.

9:58 This is called code-switching. We code-switch because our spoken Afrikaans was always depicted as a marker of low intelligence, laziness, and "not decent". However, the tide is slowly turning as former slang terminology ("aweh masekin") has become popularised across South Africa.

As a white privileged old man your videos make my cry in shame. And urge me to use my privileges for my fellow humans stripped of identity and dignity. Agitating against all the brutal ways my ruling class is engaging to ensure the infinite continuation of fascism and apartheid. Trying to transform my wish to die of shame and guilt¹ in actions agains such suppression. ¹ Being a German citizen I know we build our ridiculous obscene wealth on atrocities. Being part of the Global North’s remorseless Value Chain framework to pile up money and the power therein. In being a fully fledged German native, I am profiting off this endlessly powerful global superstructures of white supremacy and neoliberalism. Gaining profits off the war against not only the most vulnerable and least defensive (bc we are cowards) people, but also against the complete ecosphere all humanity depends on. Having to recognize my participation in a perpetuating monstrosity of ruthless exploitation and merciless destruction is very painful.

The British colonised South Africa from 1780… not the end of the 1890s. You are misinformed ! The first Malayu people were banished to Cape Town in the 1500 under Portuguese colonisation in Asia and South Africa.. …that was the sultan of Melaka or the son of the sultan of Melaka … the place of capture was Sumatra or West Java …

@@derss3283 The two European countries who occupied the land were the Netherlands (1652-1795 and 1803-1806) and Great Britain (1795-1803 and 1806-1961). South Africa, Cape Town, circa 1652+ or whenever the Dutch began bringing in slaves, until approx 1830 when slavery was abolished. The iziko museum, slave lodge, and cape town castle address and showcase slave history in the region. The slaves hailed from indonesia, malaysia, west africa, sri lanka, and so on, and traces of this diversity can still be seen in the culture or in the features of locals.
